Hi all,

My son (15mo) seems to be bored with the Vol.1 video and it's only been 3.5 weeks.  Either he IS bored because he knows it already (here's hoping!) or it's just too slow for him to be interested twice a day.  I find that I'm always stopping it before it's done.

Have any of you just done a complete different schedule than what is recommended by Dr. Titzer?  I only showed the Starter DVD for about 3 weeks.  My son is too small to regularly show that he understands the words so "testing" is not even an option at this point.

With your experience, do you think that showing each DVD for only 3 weeks (as opposed to the 2 months recommended) would be too much?

Thanks, Kizudo

I do not have YBCR and hence cannot give any input on how to modify the viewing schedule but I think you have it correct when you say that he is bored as he already knows it. Believe me, my child knew some words from YBCR just by watching a video for a week (from the library) . Why not start with the next video or LR , if you have that and take a break from Vol 1 and then reintroduce it a fter a few weeks . I am sure he would like that change.

I stuck to the schedule, but my son was about 8 months when we started. Since your son is older, he probably is bored. He probably knows most of the words. Go ahead and start showing the next one. Just remember to show him volume 1 a couple of times a week. I think there has been a point for every child using YBCR that they get bored with it. Typically, parents just stick with it and their child starts to like it again.

I think if you show the video once a day, or half the video 2x a day, and do a short session with flashcards or the books your baby will still make progress!  I just started this program, so I don't have any experience, but I think the schedule is intense and designed to give structure and consistency.  If you provide that consistency some other way other than what he suggests, it might relieve some of the boredom and pressure.

I have started ybcr with my daughter when she was around 18 to 20 month.  And my daugther was bored after I showed it for 3 weeks too.  I then emailed a lady from the website where I found out ybcr, and she told me to stick with the schedule.  (don't ask me for the website now as I have to dig out from my emails.. it's more than 6 month ago).   So I just stick with the schedule.  When I showed her the second DVD (vol. 1), she shows more interests and again, this time, after about 3 weeks, she wasn't paying full attention on the DVD.  I found out that she even knew the words before it showed on the screen!!  I was amazed to see that, and so I did not follow the schedule afterwards.

I can say that she knows most of the words from the DVDs but not all yet!  That's why I still show her once in a  while.  I just show her the review DVD today and she sat very still for the whole thing!  But the review DVD is 40-minute long!  I should have watched it before I showed her so I can stop at 20-minute!   The review DVD is actually more like LR or flashcard because it showed the words faster than the last 4 DVDs.

In my case, since my daughter talks quite early and whenever she said the words before the screen shows it, I know she already knows the words!!  Hope this helps!

My daughter is much older (almost 26 months) but we have the same problem.  I thought the instruction manual said that if your child knows more than half of the words and seems bored to move onto the next video early.  We moved onto Volume 2 early.  I still have the same problem again after a couple of weeks she disliked Volume 2.  Now we haven't done any YBCR for about 10 days because she had the flu.  Now like yourself, I'm back to grappling with the boredom.  I also use Little Reader and she enjoys it more.  We have all of the YBCR words on Little Reader but she prefers studying food catagories.  She is still willing to look at the YBCR books and the concentration game.  The videos are just too slow and some of the words are dull.  I can understand why she isn't thrilled by them.  On the other hand, thanks to YBCR she is reading words.  I've been wavering between YBCR or just creating our own program.  Do you use Little Reader too?  I will be very interested to see what you decide to do.  If I come up with any ideas I will share them.

Good Luck, Lori

My daughter is 16 months old she is on the first video YBCR , the best part for her are the songs...she dances with them so cute,.....she is really active , she probably watches the video for 12 minutes and wakes away..I only play once a day the video to her , she gets bored, but she still likes it, she points the tv for me to play the video. I play for 30 days the video once a day.She looks like she memorizes the words fast...she says or makes the sign  for the next caming up word in the video. I don't know I think that is the way I know she knows them.

No I don't think just 3 weeks is too much, I think you should do what is working for your child.  My YBCR viewing schedule is also closer to 3 weeks

I started the YBCR when dd was between 15 and 16 months old, she is now just over 18 months.  So, we have been using YBCR for just over 3 months. She only watches a video once a day, and usually not on weekends.  But still, after 3 weeks of the starter video she was acting bored, so I moved on to video 1.  Video 1 lasted 4 weeks before she was acting bored.  I moved onto Video 2.  I tried to mix it up and sometimes show the starter or video 1 (Dr. Titzer recommends that), but she will barely look at the screen anymore.  After 4 weeks at Video 2 I moved onto Video 3.  I have been doing Video 3 for over a week now, and she is already starting to act bored.  The YBCR videos are supposed to last 7 months, but I can see that I will barely make 5 months. However, on the PLUS side, I am aware that she can read a least a dozen words and that # seems to increase every few days.  So, in the end, YBCR is just another learning tool and I am not worried that I am not following their schedule.

For about a month dd LOVED the YBCR books, she couldn't get enough of them.  We would read all 5 books over and over and over all day and night.  I could bet we were reading each book about 5 or 6 times a day.  Of course, now, she will barely look at them (I am almost thankful).

I am also still using my own homemade Doman flashcards every few days.  I also use the YBCR flashcards every few days as well.  I find that if I alternate them and take a break every few days she is more interested in them.  I just keep mixing it up and keep her guessing what might be next and that seems to hold her attention better than a consistent program.

Of course, I had been using LR.  Now with the new cirriculum I am using LR twice a day, and dd is really interested in that.  She begs to sit at the computer now.

I do worry that my lack of consistency on any one program is delaying or learning, or making it more difficult for her to learn.

Lots of good comments here...thanks.

I started showing Volume 2 just the yesterday and he loved it.  He sat in the exact spot for the entire 23 or so minutes!  I think I'll just go on my own schedule as suggested by several of you...it's hard because he's not totally verbal yet, so I can't be confident that he knows the words.

I bought LR a few weeks ago (and LM) but didn't really use it until now - I was kind of holding out for the curriculum.  We love it!  It's so nice to just click and go.  I'm still showing ybcr dvds and sporadically showing the cards, but I can see me using LR more frequently.

I guess I was just bent on following the rules (showing it for 2 months before switching - as I have no idea if he really knows the words)...but as KL and many others have said before - the only rule is "have fun".  If his dumptruck is more fun than watching the video, then that's what we do at the moment.  I have, however, found that if I have a snack of cheerios or crackers ready right after his nap he'll watch the video for a much longer time period.

We also watch a sign language video every other day and I've made flashcards for the words in it.

He's getting a lot...hopefully not too much!

Hi,
I have used YBCR, but much differently! I never followed Dr. Titzer's directions. I am a Doman type mom and showed "clips" of the vidoes. What I mean is I would only show 5 words at a time, Doman method, and stop the video. If they wanted to watch the entire video I'd wait a few minutes and when they got bored with it, I shut if off. It has worked VERY WELL!!!!

So what you can do is show just five words from the video, then turn it off.  By the way..... Kids love these "clips". I would show 2 "clips" in a day along with those 5 flachcards. For 3 days, then use 5 more new words for 3 days again and keep going with it until you've shown the entire video. Both my girls have learned to read with this method. And it's sooooo easy!

I even went ahead and threw a book together with all the words from that video. I'd show the book 3 times a day for 3 days and on that last day, my 4 year old usually read the book independently.  The books do collect dust after that, but they did get read! And that's all that matters!!!

Let me know if I can help you in any other way.

Autumn

or...
show the words 5 times for 3 days for even better outcome!

Using the "clips" makes it a fun and easy way to get it done with little or no resistance.

Hope this helps some.

Hi everyone,
I made a minor mistake.....oops!

I meant to say show the words for 5 days at 3x's a day. ( If possible)  Otherwise just show them for the 3 days and move on! Good luck and let me know if there are any questions.

Sorry again for the mistake, I've had my mind on a lot lately! ((ECONOMY, making food again, and always the kids!!!LOL!))

Sincerely,
Autumn

I need your advice here. I started the ybcr program with my 15 months old daughter with volume 1 onwards but not with the starter CD (she is watching volume 2 now). Appreciate if anyone of you can advise if i should go back to the starter CD. What is the difference between the starter Vs volume 1? Also what do they have in the last CD which is called "review"?
I bought the CDs from a local shopping mall from Penang, Malaysia. They don't sell in one set & i don't even know there is a starter CD until i surf this forum.  Thanks.

The starter DVD has 22 words. It's definitely good for a child to see it because the words are common ones. They are shown more frequently than the words in the other DVDs b/c the first words are often more difficult to learn. Once a child has learned to read a few words, it is easier. Do you have the review DVD? It reviews a lot of the words from the first DVD. Since your baby is older, I wouldn't worry too much about missing the strater DVD. As long as you have the review DVD, she will still get exposed to those words.
