YBCR time commitment

My father would like to gift YBCR to my daughter, but my mother is discouraging him because a teacher friend of hers says that the time required is too unrealistic. Does anyone have an opinion on this?

Also, another friend told me that teaching a baby to read early will transition her to the left brain prematurely. Is there any validity to this?

The recommended time frame is 7 months long. I did the whole 7 months with my son, and he learned a lot.

yes, the total ybcr commitment is 7 months, my daughter learned to read all the words from the dvds.

Thanks. 7 months is not unreasonable. I have already been doing math and BOIs for 2 months.
How many times a day is recommended? I just don't know why both my mother and this lady friend of hers find the time so preposterous.

Some people just don't think kids should learn how to read early, so they come up with any opposition they can think of. It is recommended twice a day to get the best results. By the time you get to the last DVD you will only do it once a day b/c it is a longer review DVD.

I can't really say for sure, but I don't think it will transition early. I think a lot of it is in how you teach. I think Wennie from Rbkids may be able to answer.

And...if I can add that those 7 months go by so quickly!  Use the time to save up to buy Your CHILD Can Read because you'll likely like YBCR so much you'll want the follow-up dvds!  (5dvds for $99)

I agree, not take time consuming. The first few videos are like 20 mins. 20mins is not along time. My son seemed to learn alot from those videos and even at 4 years old we still put them on from time to time.

I say YBCR is worth the $$$ and the time. My DD thouroughly enjoyed YBCR very much and she learnt so much from it. 7 months does pass very quickly and it is so exciting when they start to recognise words.

As for early reading pulling them into their left brain early, I would not think so but you would have to ask Wennie from rbkids.

I wouldn't think so but I could be wrong but im preetty sure that Schishida teaches speed reading to children so i'm assuming that early reading does not put them into left brain early.

In my opinion, you don't need 7 months to do the YBCR program/  Your baby should be able to learn the words by watching the DVDs once a day for a month.  Babies are supposed to be able to learn words after 15-20 times of seeing the words.  The more you show them words, the faster they learn them and require less exposure to master words.  So in the beginning, you may show the video for a month, but if your baby is losing interest and acting bored, by all means, move on.  I think 5 months is more realistic.

If you want to teach your baby to read quickly, without a big time commitment then teach with flash cards.  It takes seconds to show a set of cards and you can do it after a diaper change or during a meal.  You can show between 5 and 20 words per set a few times a day and for a week and then keep switching your sets.  It is easy, fast and fun.  You can make the flash cards yourself or you can purchase ready made flash cards.
