Hi everyone,

My baby is 15 months and she just started seriously walking this month.  She has always babbled and started jargoning early, however since she has started walking, her jargoning has become extremely expressive and it's constant.  So anyway, I really want to communicate with her more so I would like to get her Signing Times dvd but do you think 15 months is too old for signing?

Also, I already show her YBCR and Little Pim once a day  (about) and so I am apprehensive to put her in front of another computer or TV screen.

If I do get Signing times, what Dvds do you recommend?  Should I just get vol.1 & 2?  Or is there something better for her age?

Thanks,
Lucy

I had been signing with my child since she was about 1yr old and she knows the association between sign/word. But I still checked out Signing times VOl 1 from my library and she absolutely loves it. I havent seen BST but try and see if your library has them , so you can find out which helps her and buy that one.
I do not think , any age is too old to learn ASL. I am learning it with my child!!
If you want to limit TV, try teaching her to sign during your play time/ mealtime/ potty time/ bathing/ in the park. Let her learn in context, reinforce signs, make sure to read a good book about it beforehand.

I think it's never too late to introduce ASL to your baby!  My 29-month old baby just watched it about a month ago and she loves it!  My daughter talks early and now when she does the sign language, she talks at the same time!  I guess it's just another language for her to learn.  Never too late!

I think you will find a lot of helpful responses here http://forum.brillkids.com/teaching-your-child-signing-speaking-foreign-languages/too-late-to-start-teaching-sign-language/

I don't think it's ever too late. Signing is very fun and a great way for your daughter to tell you what she may not be able to say yet. My son still watches his ST DVDs and loves them. You can get any of them that want. They are all good. You may want to looks at the signs each one teaches and decide which words you would like your daughter to learn.

I agree with everyone.  It is definitely not too late.  I borrow Signing Time form the library often and my 6 and 8 year old boys will sit, watch and learn, too.  If you got to signingtime.con, they will tell you which words are on which DVD.  I'd start with what your little one likes.  My boy really liked vol. 1.  I thought he'd like Leah's farm, with all the animals, but it isn't his favorite.  But he's still happy to watch it.   laugh

They have finger spelling (alphabet) at the end of several DVDs and my older boys have had fun learning the alphabet.  They go around happily spelling words.  I think that is a side benefit, too.   smile

I agree with everyone else.  We started early with my daughter at 9 months and now she knows a lot of signs.  We actually lucked out and was able to save a bunch of Signing Time episodes on our DVR before they stopped showing it on PBS.  It's never too late to start.  The library is a great resource.

I started ASL with my baby when she was 6 months old....she didn't seem really interested at the begining after she turn 12-13 months old started to sign more and more...now she is 16 monthd old...and I run out of sign with her....she sign for evrything and she asks me for more signs if I don't know the answer she creates one!!! So funny... But like I said they really start having fun with them after 12 months old....even if they point it is still being fun to sign....if she points to the refrigerator (of course I don't know what excatly she wants...there are lots of thing in there) so I ask her what do you want is in there...and she makes the sign..chesses ,milk.strawberries... whatever she wants)
You should try is no much  fun ....and really helpful.I love singning with her.

PY, I totally understand your problem! That happened with my son! He'd ask signs for things and I didn't know. So I bookmarked on my computer a couple of online sign language dictionaries. And sometimes in a middle of a meal I'd run to the computer to look up the word! Unfortunately there are a bunch of common words in English that don't have "signs", but rather they spell them out with fingerspelling. Very annoying. It is hard for a small child (or even an adult newly learning ASL) to be spelling out broccoli, truck, park. Strange they can have a sign for helicopter but not truck!

Here is one site that has little video loops to show to sign different words (set up like a dictionary). It is helpful but I find it is missing a lot of words (ie it doesn't have truck but has "Taco Bell"!)
http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm

You might try googling "ASL dictionary" etc to find others.

Hope that helps!

Oh, my 3.5 yr old son still loves baby signing time: it has WAY more songs and we just got the two new BST that came out in Dec, and he enjoys them as much as the new ST dvds I got him about school and feelings.

Our forums recently had a thread regarding online ASL dictionaries. You can read the post at http://www.signingtime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3356
