The Russian DVD set is transliterated!!! So, instead of words appering in Russian letters, they are written in English letters. For instance, "water" is written as "voda". Ouch! I was blown away when I saw it. I can't show it to my twins because it will just confuse them, and it's soooo ugly and painful to watch for someone who actually can read in Russian.

I called them, and they said that they did this because they wanted parents who don't know the language to be able to read Russian words. What a terrible idea! This is supposed to be immersion program. In any case, some transliterations are matter of interpretation. If I had to transliterate "water" for instance, I'd spell it as "voda" instead of "vada" because it's closer to how it's spelled in Russian. In any case, this is a total deal breaker for me. I bought the DVDs trying to teach my twins to read in Russian and English, and I think showing a transliterated material will do more damage than good, even if they do pick up a few more spoken words.

I wish Little Pim would made it clear on the order page or the page with the information about the Russian set, but there is no mention of this anywhere on their web site. Unless you go and check YouTube video specifically in Russian (and I checked only English of course before buying), you'd have no idea. I hope I can return the DVDs, but I'll likely lose $30 I spent to buy Mamapedia coupons and about $15 in shipping. Total loss of $45 Sad I would've never ever bought the DVDs if I had any idea they were transliterated.  So be warned.

I know! I saved up for ages because my son LOVES Pim, but luckily played the taster clip before paying for it! I was so upset - there is no reason for this and the translliterations are not even accurate  ohmy

Why can't they have the trasliterations as a separate subtitle track that can be turned off? They've done the same with Japanese and the second 3-set of Chinese  mad

Have you seen these Doman-style Russian dvds? http://www.umnitsa.ru/english/ This is what we got in the end and they are absolutely fabulous - big red flashcards, showing the words with several endings, saying phrases and sentences about each word clearly - my son started using Russian a lot more after we started these (though I couldn't say if he's reading or not  blush )

Unfortunately, it's the same case for Arabic, our first language at home. I was excited to get the Arabic series at first, but when I watched it on YouTube, I was surprised because it's transliterated. Plus, there were grammar mistakes. I think Little Pim team should really work on these languages especially that they are promoting immersion language learning.

Wow. I thought it was only Russian that suffered such a bad fate, but it sounds that they did it with other languages as well.

Yes! We have "Kartochki Domana na DVD", and we LOVE LOVE LOVE them. Thank you for posting about them. I think it's the best. I was looking for something similar because we're moving to disk 4, and this is the only Russian set I have. It definitely helped my girls to pick up a few words and use more Russian. And, they love watching it. Even my babysitters liked it smile Have you tried any other of Umitsa products? I see there are some other reading sets on their site listed. It's soooo hard to get them in US, so before I ask my mom to buy and mail something to me, I'd love to know if it's any good. I've downloaded some of their free content, such as alphabit with animals, and my twins love it as well.

This is why I was so excited about Little Pim - there are so few DVDs in Russian that you can get in US. They seemed to be at a decent price, comparatively speaking. And, there is a matching DVD in English, which would've been wonderful to help convey the idea that each object has at least two different names... What a disappointment.

http://www.larchick.com/DVDs.html

They have numbers & alphabet, and the alphabet uses word examples for every letter. It's a bit low budget in terms of production, but it gets the job done.

Thank you for the web site link! That looks good, and I'm going to get it smile Karma to you as well as MamaRoo.

I got an email from Little Pim that they were able to cancel my order before mailing it! I'm so relieved, and they were very understanding and professional about the whole issue. Even thanked me for my "insight" smile I wanted to mention it to be fair.

So, instead of $100 out, I should be only $30 out, which is much better. I still haven't heard from Mamasource - Mamapedia Deals through whom I got the coupons, but I hope it will work out as well. After all, I sent them three emails already smile BTW, on their web site, Little Pim deail is listed as 50% off, but if you read the small print, it says that you have to make a minimal purchase of $59.95 and that only one coupon can be applied to an order, which are $15 for $30 of Little Pim products. So, in reallity, the maximum discount is up to 25%, not 50%. I trusted the 50% off message and didn't check the small print thinking that I'd get two coupons and get the Russian set for $30. When it didn't work, that when I realized that I'd have to buy two sets via two separate orders (with separate shipping charge) in order to use my coupons. I know it's my fault for not reading the small print, and I understand that this detail is easy to miss, so I am sure it's not an intentional omission. We're all busy moms here with a lot of interruptions, so I thought I'd mention this as well since you still can buy the coupon. Just bad luck all around with this order for me!

Thanks for the link TMT smile

Unfortunately we are also struggling to find anything in Russian. We have watched some of the classic cartoons (though not very interested) which we found on youtube, and have Ni Hao Kai Lan in Russian and Chinese (a great connection between the languages, since we mostly use English and Chinese) but again, he's not that interested in that type of cartoon.

I've looked at the umnitsa products - their flashcards look really great and I have them on my wishlist. Actually, I have most of the site on my wishlist  wub  Their sign language dvds are really good, but they use the same words and a lot of the same video as the words. I *really* want this http://www.umnitsa.ru/cat/DVD_knizhki-malyshki/ which is 30 Doman-style fairy tales on a disk. I think that would be a good progression from the annoying monkey (it is all he wants to watch at the moment and he's been sweet talking me into a whole disk each day the past couple of weeks  blink ).

I would really appreciate any other links - I have looked and looked but there seems to be very little - just lots of Russian translations of English cartoons!

I know! I also want pretty much everything on their web site smile Umnica is great! There is also "Govorim s pelenok" 2 set DVD, which has words, couplets, and then sentences. It's based on Doman as well, and they flash a word, say it, and then show a picture. It's kind of low budget and not as polished as Kartochki Domana, but it serves the purpose.

http://www.umnitsa.ru/cat/DVD_govorim_s_peljonok_2_diska/

On a separate note, I got an email from Mamasource that they have refunded my $30 for the Little Pim coupons! Yey!!! It took a couple of days for them to get back to me, but they came through. So, may be now I can get some of the umnica stuff :P

Thank you so much for sharing! My girls LOVE "The Two Geese", and I kind of do too. I downloaded it from YouTube with Mozilla since we have an intermittent connection where we're staying so that we can play it anytime. It's a classic smile Thanks again.

Umnica materials are great, I will definitely recommend them ( apart from their shipping, which is not too reliable iт my personal experience)

Vunderkind s pelenok -- http://www.wunderkind.kiev.ua/?module=dvd2/1  - 210 presentations, they are good and my kids love them, they also have some additional EK style presentations in their Vunderkind-2,3-4,5 series, but they are for a bit older children

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/ulCeAyoKHzA&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/ulCeAyoKHzA&rel=1</a> -- this one teaches words, couplets and simple sentences

Another one from Umnica that I like : <a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/fqGNZlr5iIs&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/fqGNZlr5iIs&rel=1</a>

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/yIE_EuSxIlI&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/yIE_EuSxIlI&rel=1</a> -- this is trailer for Interactive video story/ cartoon that teaches alphabet, it is really good, my kids love it, and learned letters really fast, definitely recommend it, I had to get it in Russia, not sure they ship internationally

"Luntik"  -- short cartoons. Each one is about 4-5 minutes long, they have excellent selection of words and expressions, everything  pronounced VERY clearly, each one has little lesson that child will learn ( how to help others, how to be polite, friendship), quality is excellent, and ... they have about 300 + of them and counting ( it is an ongoing series on Russian educational TV) I am using them to teach my DS and DD new words, expressions. Its really fun and sweet. They love it!

http://www.luntik.ru/?p=video&seria=4  -- you can watch a lot of them here.

Also, my LOs love documentaries, we watched simple Russian documentaries since they were 6 months, and they loved loved loved that! They learned lots of words and sentences from just watching those.

Our favorite ones are All about animals from BBC ( it was professionally translated to Russian in 2007, I think, has video and magazine for each baby animal, and there are 52 animals covered) and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/fuAiDa5y-YU&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/fuAiDa5y-YU&rel=1</a> (Russia from edge to edge)

Wow, great stuff. Thank you again!!! "Govorim s pelenok" is a great stuff, but the other two may be a bit advanced for us, but will be wonderful when the girls get older. I'll show them "Luntic" tomorrow. Fun. They now want to see "Gysis" (geese in plural in Russian with an added "s" to make it double plural) cartoon all the time. We're just learning our plurals, so I think there is some confusion between Russian and English forms smile

Where can get the documentaries with the animals in Russian? You mentioned that there 52 translated ones. Thank you in advance..

PS - I was able to get my $30 from Mamasource Mamapedia without any problems. It took them a couple of days to get back to me, but in the end, they came through. Unfortunately, Little Pim managed to cancel only one order but not the other one. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.
