What a great idea about writing the date they show the sign. My dd is just running with signing this last month (17 months). She watches or requests the videos constantly and wants to know the sign for everything.

Hi all,

I have shown on the ST to my 28-month baby and since volume 1 is not available in our library, I have shown her the "Leah's farm" and she loves it!  I wonder if it's ok if we don't start from volume 1.  Later on I found out there is BST, for those who have owned both, is it ok to just show ST ?

Thanks

The order doesn't matter, nor does which DVDs you show. I suggest you focus on the DVDs with the words that you would like your baby to learn.

i started signing with tina when she was 4 months old , she signed back at 7 months and never stopped . she is now 3 and she still uses signs while speaking . her language is amazing but everybody comment on the way she talks , very expressive with her arms and face , and all her body . friends make jokes and say she could be a future hollywood star  smile and i really believe it is the signing .
our little man is only six months old and can already sign for milk , wave bye bye , and tired . he can say book , and mama , and out , three very clear words .

We have progress charts available that show what signs are taught in each DVD. It is fun to check off the signs your child knows. If your child is not yet signing, it is fun to put the date they first signed the word in the box. You can download them at http://www.signingtime.com/resources/support/

Excellent not only for following up for those who start signing but also to decide what DVD you like most according to the words they contain. Thanks a lot Signing time.

..... my son and I LOVE LOVE LOVE BST and ST, but most of all BST. He is 3.5 yrs old now and I got the two new BST dvds that came out at Christmas, even though he is older and we have almost every ST dvd. The BST have WAY more songs... every few signs it shows, there is a new song. That is THE best way to have my son engaged in the dvd, and we sing the songs while going for walks etc. I don’t particularly like the CDs because they have multiple copies of the same song on them, including sort of Karaoke versions. I find they are a lot of money for few songs.

My son adores all the ST dvds and as the woman who does them (her daughter is deaf) is a songwriter by profession to start with, the songs are really catchy and you find yourself singing them all the time. My son learned all his colors from ST, and as someone else remarked, they have a cartoon image and the word clearly printed on screen when the signs are signed by an adult, so they are an intro to reading as well. The signs are clearly signed by multiple children of different ages, which really helps the child watching, but also the parent, to be able to understand your child when he does the sign, but not quite right.

I have a 3 yr old grandson and think BST will be better because he will also learn basic words in english besides signing. Nevertheless I am afraid it will be to simple and he will get bored as with baby einstein that is not for his age anymore.

The BST is definitely regular ASL, but they show signs that are important for babies: milk, diaper, more, all done, potty etc. ....
I also tried to buy dvds that didn’t replicate the ones known in BST.

If I decide to start with BST to get his attention and then go to ST, which ST DVD's will avoid repetition of BST?

I have been researching Signing times for the last week. My daughter who is now 18 months has been doing YBCR since she was really young maybe 3 or 4 months and LM since she was 11 months. She has a great vocabulary because I spent time with her teaching her with and without YBCR and she counts and recognizes numbers thanks to LM. I am very interested in teaching her other languages including sign language. I am a young mother (22 years old) so spending money on products is very difficult I have to be completely sure about the product before I spend money on it. I have been looking int Baby Signing Times (BST) and I realized that the flash cards and music CDs are not necessary, So I could just make my own DVD bundles but I would like to know if between BST or ST which one is better  considering that ST (first three dvds) I have been told is repetitive of BST. I want her to have a solid foundation for it but I also will be purchasing ST after she finishes BST if we like it and I don't want to spend money on the same product in a different format. Please let me know. I did find the posts on here very useful, also I looked into MBCT and I didn't care for it, the reviews have been far better for BST/ST.

Thank you,
Christine big grin

I only used Signing Time with my baby starting when she was 7 months old. I had borrowed both BST and ST from our library and decided to purchase ST. BST has more songs but also more cartoons while ST has more live action videos and real kids like YBCR (which my baby had been watching since 3-4 months old). She liked ST right away and, in my opinion, she didn't miss anything by not watching BST. We went on to get the full collections of series 1 and 2 of ST and she learned 90-95% of the signs in all 26 dvds. Even now that she's 2.5 years old and is speaking in full sentences, she still likes to watch the videos and sing the songs.

Just my 2 cents - hope this helps!  smile

I have Signing time full collection.

Your daughter is 18 month old I think she will do great without BST. I would start with ST series one as it has about 30 new words per DVD, It has all the words from BST, so your daughter won't miss out.
ST series 2 have new words but about 15 per DVD. So I would postpone getting it right away

My personal opinion smile

We have both BST and some ST DVDs and CDs.  Both are captivating and interesting for little chldren, and my two enjoy both immensely.

My little guy (1yr - with DS) has been having a signing explosion of late and we are watching them everyday.  For the most part I show the BST ones, in order to teach/reinforce the most useful signs for baby's day-to-day life (diaper, juice, milk etc), but we also watch the ST ones too.  With two kids, our needs in terms of sign range (from milk to hippopotamus!) is quite vast.  My 3yr old likes both series, and regularly requests specific titles.  Of course, we follow no specific order and find it works just fine.  BTW, on the ST site, they advertise packs (of random, non-consecutive titles) for specific groups (DS, Autism etc) too, so order of titles doesn't seem to be an issue.
