Hi all moms,

I have just started signing time with my 28-month old baby and I would like to know usually how long does one DVD can last?  Do you ask your baby to do the signs and if they know most of them, then we move on?   Or we look at their interest level?

I did not start with Vol 1 because the copy of it is not available in my local library so I just picked Vol 7 about the farm.  My baby loves it very much because she keeps asking us to play it.  Since I don't want her to watch too much TV, or I should say, I don't want her to sit for too long in front of the TV, so we play it once after dinner!  She keeps doing the signs after the second time she watched it and she loves it a lot!  Then I borrowed the Baby Signing Time Vol 1 and played it in the morning after breakfast.  I am not sure if I should let her watch the whole disc at a time because it's about 30 minutes.   So now I play baby signing time vol 1 in the morning then signing time after dinner.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I am in Canada and I found out that in the canada site, we don't have the whole collection selection and only individual DVD. But in the US site, they have whole collection.   Thanks

My daughter is watching Vol 1. She has been watching it for a little bit over a month and I think is time to get the Vol 2. She watches the whole DVD. She loves it! My daughter is too little to sign back, but I think she has learnt the signs because she gets very excited when I do the sign for milk  big grin I don't like my daughter watching tv either, but as long as she is watching educational dvd's I'm ok with it. Let's clarify I don't put her in front of the tv all day or use it as a babysitter.

My son already watch the signing time vol 1 to 9.  I only allow him to watch signing time after his meal (lunch and dinner). Each time i will random choose any vol. for him to watch. May be he is growing up now (going to 3 yrs), when i repeated the vol 1 or 2 for him...... he feel not so interest compare watching the vol.5 onwards.

ho, when did you start to show this series to your son?  My daughter has been watching it for about 10 days now and whenever she sees Rachel on the screen, she goes in front of the TV and give her a kiss!  LOL   I think she still enjoys the whole DVD.   I just don't know when I should show her another volume.  I always want to start it from Vol 1 but it's still checked out by someone!  Also, other mom told me it's ok to start with any volume so I just start!

Anyways, thanks for all your inputs.

My son watches one educational DVD per day while I shower or do some chores. They are about 30 minutes long. Then before bed, we watch half of a signing time DVD. He has learned around 100 signs just from watching 15 minutes of ST per night. I mix the DVDs up every night too, just to keep things interesting.

tina,
i let my son watch it at his age about 5 months. I should thanks to one of my friend who recommend this useful DVD for me since my son is a special kid who facing speech delay problem. Now he still not yet able to talk but he always sign to me. So i can understand what he try to tell..... this make him not to frustrated.
For your bb still very young age (5 months), i encourage you start it from vol 1. Those words to sign in vol 1 is more suitable for him.
Beside signing time, i also let my son watching Brainy Baby DVD. It is very interesting education DVD too!!
Hope you enjoy your signing time with your son smile

nhockaday,
When you said educational DVD, did you mean YBCR or Tweedlewink?  YBCR is about 20 minutes long and Tweedlewink is about 7 to 8 minutes.  Do you think it will be too much to show the whole ST at a time?  This morning, I showed the BST and I only showed for 15 minutes. I just worry that she won't be concentrate on books if I show her too much on TV.

ho,
thanks for your sharing and my daughter is now 28-month but her sister is 5.5 month now!  I may consider letting her watch a bit, but I just worried about too much TV exposure to her!

For others who do not allow baby to watch TV, will you still show educational DVD (i.e YBCR,TW,ST) at early age?

Yes, by educational, I mean YBCR (primarily), occasionally some others that I have. I only show half of ST because he watches 20 or 30 minutes of DVDs earlier in the day. I don't think it is too much to show the whole ST as long as your kid is not watching too much other stuff during the day and as long as she wants to watch the whole thing. I know ST are my sons absolute favorite DVDs. I know he would watch the whole thing if I let him, but I just don't want him watching too much. I don't play the whole thing earlier in the day b/c ST is something I like to watch with him so we can practice the signs together and I can learn the signs.

I wouldn't worry too much about letting her watch a little bit of high quality educational material. If she is learning something from it, then you have nothing to worry about; she is better off watching it than not.

Signing Time is a great for parent interaction with the child. Only you can determine how much TV you want your child to watch. With Baby Signing Time, you can let let what one Song at a time. We teach the signs and then reinforce them with a song.

You can buy the individual gifts sets to make the full collection on the Canada site.

I started my oldest when she was 1 and she started signing back at 15 months. With my second we start exposing her from birth and she started signing at 9 months. With my last, we have also exposed him from birth and he is 6 months recognizes the sign for milk, eat and change. I can't wait to see his first sign.

Hi,

i also think that education videos are ok. Sometimes is good for them to watch a video and if they are going to learn something from them is great. I got for my baby the whole set of baby signing time.  i start teaching by baby at 9 months by 12 months she was signing around 15 months i bought some fashcards and just before i was going to stop teaching her.. i realized she was very interested in signing. i found the baby signing time.. i read a lot of feedbacks before buying them because they are not cheap but trust me is the best investment.. my baby loves them and she has learn plenty of signs and english from the videos. i speak only spanish and my husband french.. she is saying words in english and its because of this videos.. also i have friends that their babies cry a lot because they can't express themselves.. with too many languages around.. i decided to teach her the sign language so she would be able to express her self.. my baby is 22 months old.. she tells me when she is hungry, thirsty, when she needs a diaper change, when something hurts, .. the videos are worth it.

I used to think my daughter was always asking to see Baby Signing Time & Signing Time because she was always saying “Baby time.”  I just realized that she is actually trying to sing the songs now that she is speaking more and is actually saying more of lyrics.  I started singing with her and she is thrilled!  I am thrilled because it gives me an alternative to saying “no signing time” or just ignoring her.  We have been doing this for a couple days now and she has started experimenting with pitch.  So cute!  I had actually been limiting how often I would show videos because I thought she was obsessed with watching them and I had heard from other parents that this can become a problem when the tantrums start.   I’m not going to worry about that so much now.

I just want to say that I am glad I read this thread couple months ago and decided to get BST and ST. My daughter had a very short vocabulary but since she is watching this DVDs her vocabulary has increased enormously. I saw results fast. Her first sign she did was bird and my husband and I were surprised when she was signing bird every time she saw one. I think her second word was cracker. We had to move soon to the ST Dvds because she was learning too fast. Another thing I love about teaching her to sign is that I sign anyword to her and say it in Spanish also so she can relate the sign to both language. I love when she hears the word water or sees it and signs water but says "agua".
The only problem that I see is that now she signs and says baby sign, baby sign, baby sign and gets mad if I play YBCR, so I had to stopped for a while or make sure  YBCR is playing before she is in front of the TV.

When my son signed that his shoes hurt at 10 months of age I was estatic that I taught my son sign language.

Both my boys have learned sign language... My youngest I did since birth and he signed milk at 5 months...

You are so excited to catch the signs its as if they are talking words... Just as each word your  child expresses is precious.. the signs end up being just as exciting.  I think that excitement ends up in a natural positive reinforcement to learning.  This natural reaction of excitement explodes that your child is communicating allows them to see that there are many positive reactions to communicating and I think hence your child communicates earlier.

For us, the signing response was a shock... I never knew my baby or any baby knew so much, or could express themselves so well.  My first son knew over 500 signs by the time he was talking.

In the end signing with my child was also a motivation to teach them more things... I taught signing before I heard about Glenn Doman... and the things my 2 year old knows is amazing.   He know his countries, his right from left, he reads about 500 words, he know the bones of his body, he speacks in perfect sentaces, he makes up stories, he counts to 50 he understands so much... I am truely amazed and in awe.

Teach them all you can its the best gift you can ever give.   As for TV>  definately regulate... but certain programs like signing time can be used in its entirety.
I dont allow my kids to watch a lot of TV... and what I do is controlled.  Children are influenced by everything you expose them to.  Racheal from signing time is geniune and fun... kinda like me standing up in front of my kids to teach... cuz lets face it every once in a while we all need 30 minutes to catch up on things around the house.. and prepare lessons for our kids.

BTW> signing time congrats to the latest edition... you feel almost like family... upon reading you have another baby I was estatic for you and your family.  Cheers!

Does  it matter what signing time vol. teach first to your child? My baby doesn't watch ST ...for some reason...I tried twice to play for her but she starts crying, now she is 17 months old she has over 50 sign in her vocabulary, she learned them from homemade flashcards and mommy.
I will try one more time ST(because i love them,,,are really educational)I have the vol.4-5-6.
Is that ok> or I should buy the vol. 1-2-3 first??
I guess it really doesn't matter right?
