EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Math for kids: Measuring Height
|

Child's understanding of measurement begins with vocabulary development at age three. Parents can help by using mathematical terms to describe amounts and sizes — for example, saying "tall" or "long". Teach kids, whether at home or in a classroom, the different types of measurements they need to know and the tools they can use to measure certain things. Help them remember measurement terms and conversions and provide plenty of hands-on activities to experience all types of measurements. Have the children use rulers, yardsticks and measuring tapes. Encourage kids to measure the width or height of doors, windows and the room. Older children can use the same tools to figure the unit of area, such as square feet, for various items. A digit is a single character that we use to represent a number. We usually use 10 digits to represent numbers. Example: The numeral 153 is made up of 3 digits ("1", "5" and "3"). Learn about number and understand the foundation to develop strong numeracy skills: https://learning.covoji.com/math-zone/what-is-number/By learning the numbers, children can understand how number system works, how numbers relate to each other and make calculation easier. It gives them the confidence to be flexible in their approach to solving problems. The main step is to teach kids how to identify the first ten numerals (0 through 9), teaching them the sounds of numbers in English and also how to write the numbers.

Research shows that parents can have a powerful impact on their child's mindsets. The language you use and the actions you take show your children what you expect. So as parent it seems smart to develop a growth mindset in your child. Teach your kids: "When you make a mistake it’s not an indication that you are doomed to be a failure; it’s an opportunity to grow." Remember that relationship is connection not perfection. Monitor your self-talk. Pay attention to your own internal dialogue about abilities. When you or your child struggle to do something, do you tend to conclude that you can’t develop the needed ability, or that you haven’t developed it yet? Say positive words. https://learning.covoji.com/growth/growth-mindset-parenting/
