* singing songs, if you are bilingual , this could be good time to start using both languages in rhymes, sing-song voice. *i used to use some handmade flash cards as suggested by tracy Hogg, (that was way before I knew about Doman,LR etc, seems prehistoric but I did it) * with the child sitting in the bouncer and just talking with your child as you go about completing chores like folding laundry. *giving her little textured toys (which can fit in her hand easily but not too small) so the child can explore it. maybe even a small rattle. Give her good tummy time experiences, get down on the floor with your child an talk to her from different directions, so as to encourage good visual tracking, head lifting. the reason i have mentioned non -lingustic activities is because for a child to be able to integrate any information, physical and cognitive development both are important.for e.g. good head control will help her to absorb from the flash cards .I would wait a while to start flash cards.

Hi , your story sounds exactly like mine. Even I came to learn about early learning alittle too late and have taken a break from my professional career to be with our child. And I used the exact same pattern first handmade cards , then PPt and now will be using LR.and I am from India too, its almost as if I have written your thread. But like you have said better late than never. I really hope Brill kids has some program for supporting our Indian languages too, that would really be wonderful. I am not sure how to give karma points , but I give them to you, for being my soul sister!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: What Age do you start Encyclopedic Knowledge?

one of the books written by Glenn Doman suggests that the order of introduction be : reading, EK and then math. BUt most of the people here seem to be reversing the last 2. Should it really make a big difference. i agree that combining reading and EK on LR seems a lot of fun. I mean , If someone were teaching me, that is how i would want to be taught. The book does not give any explicit reasoning for this sequence though. Any ideas?

Hello, I am from Mumbai, presently living in US,. I was very pleasantly surprised to learn about ISP and have told a few of my friends about it. I myself have very recently started on Doman method so late but as they say better late than never. I will be starting LR soon .I will be starting with flashcards in Devnagari script . I wonder if they will have that on LR too.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / reading/encyclopedic knowledge and pronunciation

I have just started with the reading /EK program with my child in English. While teaching certain words or paintings/monuments ,I frequently encounter worlds whch are in French . I have no clue how to pronounce them and sometimes end up deleting them from the category. Obviously I do not want to do that. Is there any solution to this? If I may add , I am just now starting to use the trial version of LR .

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: How can you tell if young babies know the words when using flashcards?

I had the exact same doubt and found an acceptable solution in Glenn Domansbook, It suggests problem solving opportunities. "the purpose of problem solving opportuniies is for the child to be able to demonstarte what he knows if he wishes to do so"
according to the book. A simple example of problem solving would be to hold up two cards say apple and banana and ask where is banana? If your baby looks at the card banana or touches it , you are naturally delighted and make a fuss. if he choses the other card , simplysayThis is apple and this is banana. the complexity of question varies with age. This is similar to what divaseven has replied. I tried problem solving this morning, it worked , I limited it to 2 questions.
I have yet to try LR multisensory approach, all my single words at this time are based on the words which my child knows the meaning of as I am just starting with this. I wish i knew about these approaches before hand but nevertheless....
Hope that helps
