BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: attaching pictures in LR
on: May 12, 2009, 03:45:43 AM
Hi Joanna, Not a problem, let's look at these questions one by one. In order to attach a picture form internet do I have to save it in my computer and then attach it to the word?Yes, the file needs to exist locally (on your hard drive) before you can attach it to a word. Is there any way to copy the pictures from PP to LR?There certainly is! If you have PowerPoint XP or 2003: • Right-click the image, choose "Save as image" from the pop-up menu. The Save As Picture dialog box appears. • Select a location for the picture and give it a name • Click the downward-pointing arrowhead next to the Save button and choose "Save original". If you have an earlier version of PowerPoint, then it's MS PhotoEditor to the rescue. PhotoEditor is included in Office 97-2002, so if it's not already installed, re-run Setup and install it. • Left-click the image in PowerPoint to select it, then choose Edit, Copy or press Ctrl+C on your keyboard. • Start PhotoEditor and choose Edit, Paste As New Image. • Save the image from PhotoEditor to the format of your choice. Note: When you copy and paste images from PowerPoint to most other programs, you get the image as it's currently displayed in PowerPoint, not at its original resolution. For example, if you have a 1024x768 pixel screen capture that you've imported into PowerPoint and reduced to 1/4 screen size, it will be copied and pasted at the reduced size. If I delete a picture where is it stored, how can I reattach it?It depends on how you've deleted it, but I'll try to address the most likely situations: - If you have deleted a picture from your computer, you can always check the Recycling Bin on your Desktop. - If you have removed the picture from a Word in Little Reader, the picture will still be in its original location on your computer. - If you have removed the picture from a Word in an imported Category, you may find all of your imported and default media at the following path: My Documents\BrillKids\Little Reader HOME\Media LibraryI hope that covers what you're looking for; if you have any further questions, do let me know. Cheers, shuki

BrillKids Software / HOW TOs and FAQs / How to use the Icon Set Settings
on: May 12, 2009, 03:04:43 AM
How to use the Icon Set SettingsYou may select which Icon Set to use during your Little Math presentations by editing your Preset Settings. In the Preset Settings (see attachment) you may select the Icon Set to use for your presentation, as well as a few other nifty features! Here's a quick run-down: • Specific Icon Set - By selecting, for example, Basic Shapes or Fruits, your presentation will be restricted to display only that Icon Set. • Random (each slide) - This option enables Little Math to randomly select a different Icon Set each time you advance forward during a presentation! • Random (each playback) - This option keeps the Icon Set consistent for the entire presentation, but each time you choose to play the Preset it will randomly pick a different Icon Set. Once you have selected your Icon Set, you may also choose from a similar range of options, to customise exactly which Icon you want to show. By making use of these features you can re-use the same lesson content while keeping it fresh and interesting for your child! Why not check out the Little Math Library and grab some great Icons for your little one? That concludes today's guide, we hope you will enjoy teaching your little one with Little Math! Shuki

BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: multiple files for the same word?
on: May 11, 2009, 08:35:35 AM

Hi Nikolett, When you choose to RENAME, it will give you the option to type in a new name of your choice. If you would like to automate the process however, you may select "Apply to all" and Little Reader will proceed to automatically rename all word files for you. The reason the dialogue will appear multiple times is because Little Reader first asks whether you would like to RENAME: - the Word files.... And then it will ask you whether you would like to RENAME: - the attached Images.... - and then the attached audio... - and then the attached videos... ... just to make sure you're not committing to anything you didn't want to, and giving the user as much control as possible. It's a little bit confusing, but in future versions of Little Reader these conflicts will be handled automatically, so do bear with us! Cheers, shuki

BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: multiple files for the same word?

Hi Nikolett, Perhaps it will be simpler to give you a brief description of what each option does : RENAME - Creates a NEW 'Pig' entry, so that the old one is completely preserved, and the new one is created exactly as the original author intended. This is the safest option, and advised for less tech-savvy users. REPLACE - Will completely REPLACE the old 'Pig' entry! The old images, pronunciations and videos attached to the old 'Pig' entry will not be deleted from your system and will remain in your My Documents\BrillKids\Little Reader HOME\Media Library folder, but will not be linked to any words. NOTE: To remove these unused files, you may go to the FILE menu in the upper-left of your Little Reader HOME and select the Purge unused media option. COMBINE - Will add all the linked pictures, pronunciations and videos to the currently existing 'Pig' entry. SKIP - will not create a new 'Pig' entry, nor import any associated media files (images, audio etc). Your imported Category will not include a 'Pig' at all. I hope that helps, maybe I'll post this up in Little Reader FAQs later as well Cheers, shuki

BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Unique Benefits of Little Reader
on: May 06, 2009, 08:47:22 AM
Hi Tornado, For Little Reader, please see the Advantages of using Little Reader page, I think it may answer a lot of questions. Also, Little Reader is specifically designed for attaching media files such as audio pronunciations and videos. With PowerPoint there are many fidgety settings (embedded file size limits, for example) that you would need to be familiar with to make an equivalent presentation. Once you have created the words in Little Reader, you may also randomise their order, which PowerPoint also cannot do. Furthermore, each time you play back a created lesson in Little Reader, it can show different pictures, use different pronunciations, and even modify type settings! To do so in PowerPoint would require creating many copies of the same content and adjusting each element manually. As for Little Math, you can randomly generate a sequence of dot cards (whether to teach counting, or mathematical equations) simply by adjusting a set of parameters, and it will create the entire presentation on the fly, guaranteeing a unique lesson every time. One of the main arguments against math dot cards is that babies may simply be memorising dot patterns, a problem that Little Math handily circumvents. But one of the greatest features of Little Math is the sheer variety of icons available. In Little Math, icons are the pictures used when representing quantities in dot slides - many parents have commented that this is the single biggest reason their babies are enjoying math again. By using personalised icons, it can make the difference from abstract, meaningless red dots to fun, relevant lessons that your child can enjoy. Those are only brief answers though, for more information do see our product pages and related articles - Little Reader: http://www.brillkids.com/little-reader/index.phpLittle Math: http://www.brillkids.com/little-math/index.phpOf course, if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask Cheers, Shuki

BrillKids Software / HOW TOs and FAQs / How to Create New Icon Sets
on: April 24, 2009, 09:21:28 AM
How to Create New Icon SetsIcon sets allow you to use your own pictures to represent quantities for the dot slides you display in Little Math. These can be used in many ways, such as to reinforce the concept of what a quantity is, or to help maintain your child's attention by using his favourite TV character or toy! Today's guide will teach you how to create new Icon sets quickly and easily! To create a new Icon set you will need:
- Image files (Little Math is compatible with .JPG, .BMP, .GIF and .PNG file extensions) to use as your Icons.
Tip: For users of Little Reader HOME BASIC, you may use BrillKids Picture Editor to edit your images for Little Math! Assuming you have image files ready to plug into your Little Math, let's get started. First navigate to the NUMBER LIBRARY of Little Math by clicking on the NUMBER LIBRARY button at the top of the application. From this screen: - Select the Icons tab from the Number Library screen. - Click on the NEW button located in the bottom-left of the Icons tab. Alternatively, you may right-click in the Icon set list and select "New Icon Set" from the context menu that appears. - A new Icon set will be created below the Icon set you have currently selected, with its name highlighted. - Type in the desired name for your new Icon set (e.g. "Sports Balls"), and press ENTER on your keyboard to confirm. - To begin attaching image files to your new Icon set, follow the steps below: 1) Click on the "ADD ICON(S)" button. 2) A window will pop up allowing you to navigate and select the file(s) you want to add. You can select multiple files to save yourself time! 3) Once you have selected the file(s) you wish to add, click on " Open" to confirm. 4) You will see a preview of the file(s) you just added. To save you even more time, you may also check our Little Math Library to see if the Icon Set you want has already been created. Additional Icon sets may be downloaded and imported straight into your Number Library. That concludes today's guide, we hope you will enjoy teaching your little one with Little Math! Shuki

BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / Re: LM vs Doman Math Kit
on: April 17, 2009, 03:52:56 AM
Hi Joha, It certainly does, as of the version currently available, it comes with over a hundred presets spanning over addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, mixed equations (what Shichida Method refers to as multitudinous calculations, such as a / b + c - d = x) and more. Other forum members have also reproduced and uploaded complete day-by-day Presets for teaching math using the Doman method and the Shichida method, available for download in the Little Math Library! Little Math also has the ability to generate randomised equations depending on parameters that the parent can control, or can simply play equations that the parent puts into a custom list. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask! Cheers, shuki
