hi, so i am not sure whether this is a problem or not, but my daughter doesn't seem to be interested in flash cards, at all. i have been showing them and also some flash cards with nice images on an ipad, but there she is only interested in pushing all the buttons. so, should i continue, one week is up, and retire some words and add new ones, or should i assume that she hasn't seen them enough and continue with the same set? how about keeping her interest? she is 19 months old and loves when we read, she pays attention really well then, but words don't seem to grab her. any suggestions? thanks, slowly losing faith... liza

Thanks. Ezhik. Russian grammar is tough even for us native speakers! We have started going to a dance class with my daughter and now I am trying to repeat the words she hears there in english at home, so she's not too lost. I am a bit concerned about her hearing me speak different languages, but it's unavoidable, so it will do.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Is it working

Hi, I know this must sound somewhat silly considering that I've been showing words for all of six days, but how do I know if it's even working. I know that testing is a no-no, so what are we left with here? My daughter doesn't seem too interested in the cards, mostly what interests her is how to get them away from me. She is 19 months old now and very persistent. Anyway, I'm showing her 25 words as many times a day as she let's me, 4-5 but I haven't seen any sign of recognition, even with simple words like mama. Any ideas? Thanks

Thank you Aangeles for such a friendly response. I will be checking out your videos as soon as I have some time. Funny you mention YBCR, I saw one tape and it seemed boring, maybe I'm wrong though, who knows what babies find entertaining. I haven't showed the videos to her also because I wanted to start with Russian and I find that doing flashcards is easier. What I don't really understand about these methods is how will a child go from only recognizing words you have shown before, to reading texts independently, that just sounds like such a stretch of the imagination. In anY case, i guess I won't know until we start. Thanks again, Liza

I'm afraid this question is going to sound somewhat dimwitted but still, you mention teaching the words to the song through LR, does it really work? I haven't purchased it yet, and have shown some flash cards, but how do you know it's working? One is not supposed to test afterall. Did you use other methods in tandem too? Thanks so much, Liza

I don't know about the feeding aspect of your concern, but my daughter, who's 18 months old seems to have developed some strange, whiny, stranger anxiety. I'm not sure what it is but about two weeks ago she has started crying a lot more and if there are other kids at the slide or something, she won't go there. Our dancing class is a nightmare. I'm repeating the mantra that it's a sign of growing intellect, but I hope she'll soon grow out of it. The anxiety, not the intellect obviously. Liza

It's nice to read of adventurous eaters. It's been kind of hard as of late with my daughter since she doesn't seem as hungry and in general I have noticed that she will only eat what I'm eating so I stopped freezing/pureeing stuff at about a year. Still, vegetables are hard. Aangles, how did you get your daughter to eat her veggies? Raw my daughter doesn't seem to chew well and steamed, she doesn't find too appealing.

thanks for your reply. i have also always thought that english shouldn't be a problem, but i have noticed that as her understanding grows, my daughter has become more shy around people, and i think that it is because she realizes that they are speaking a different language from ones she knows. usually, i just translate to her, but still, it doesn't feel sufficient somehow. we have friends who have also just spoken russian to their kids, and it is somewhat sad to see this 5 year old at the playground where he has to ask his mom what the other kids are saying. there must be a better way. thanks, liza

hi, my daughter is 18 months old and i still breastfeed her, but much, much less than before. it's mostly whatever we are eating. at the beginning she would eat what i made her, cubes of food and so on, but now she refuses anything special and wants to eat off of my plate. so, we are all stuck eating organic you should eat lots of nuts to keep up your milk supply if you want to breastfeed for 2 years, also fenugreek supplements help. good luck, liza

hi, i have a general question that some of you who have gone through the same thing might be able to clarify. i want my daughter(18 months) to speak, and read, in 3 languages. this shouldn't be too difficult since i speak to her in russian, her father speaks to her in spanish and we live here in the states. my question is, if i want to do the reading program in english, should i be speaking to her in english that entire time? i have stuck firmly to russian for now, so it would seem counter-intuitive. on the other hand, we have started going to gym classes, and i have realized that she understands no english at all, a hindrance too. finally, if i want to present the brill reader and math, how would my daily schedule look? say, i start with english, then continue with flash cards in russian, spanish and then do math and this 3 times daily? plus the encyclopedic bit? that just sounds unrealistic. has anyone had any luck with something like this?
thanks a lot. liza

hi, i just have a quick question for now, and that is, would you recommend speaking english while using brillkids in english? i mean, usually when we are out and about, even though everyone speaks english, i have stuck to russian, so it seems strange to me to listen to brillkids in english without actually communicating with my baby in russian. thanks, liza
