107  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Swimming Lessons for Babies. When did you start? on: May 16, 2011, 01:42:05 AM
Hi Kimba15..

You mentioned you live near a beach.. did you start introducing your 5 months old girls in the beach?
or at a pool?

I leave near a beach too! but the water here is not clean i'm afraid.. so my only choice is the club pool.

Now all shared pools are chlorinated! and I read in the brillkids article mentioned about chlorine.. (copied below)

I’ve heard that chlorine is bad for babies’ respiratory health, especially when used in indoor pools. When should I be worried?

EL: As long as your child has no specific allergies or respiratory problems, and you do not stay in a chlorinated indoor pool for more than half an hour, she should be fine. [If you can smell the chlorine, it means the amount in the water is higher than it should be. Minimize use of such pools, or ask the pool’s management to consider reducing the chlorine level.]

hmm.. the article recommends only half an hour of pool time  unsure
did you follow this advice?

thanks

108  Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Re: Importance of Breastfeeding on: May 15, 2011, 11:38:47 AM
breastfeeding .. another reason to do it!

“Mums should breastfeed for at least four months to avoid having naughty kids,”
reported The Sun.
Yesterday's article from Nursingtimes.net
http://www.nursingtimes.net/nursing-practice/clinical-specialisms/childrens-nursing/are-breastfed-babies-better-behaved/5029802.article

A summary taken from BabyFriendly initiative :-
New data from Millennium Cohort Study shows link between breastfeeding and behavioural problems
A new study on breastfeeding and its association with behavioural problems has received widespread coverage in the media today.

Researchers, using data from the Millennium Cohort Study, have found that babies who are breastfed are less likely to become children with behaviour problems by the time they reach the age of five than those who receive formula milk.

A total of 10,037 mother–child pairs from white ethnic background (9,525 term and 512 preterm children) were included in the analyses. Duration of any breastfeeding was ascertained from parental interview at study baseline, when the children were aged 9 months. They used a Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire completed by the parents to score children and identify potential behavioural problems, defined as “inappropriate behaviours that occur repeatedly over a period of time, have a negative impact on the child's development and interfere with the child's or their family's everyday life." These can include emotional (e.g. clinginess, anxiety), hyperactivity (e.g. restlessness), and conduct (e.g. lying and stealing), by the time the child was aged five.

The authors found that abnormal scores for the questionnaires, which indicate potential behavioural problems, were less common in children breastfed for at least four months (6%) than in formula-fed children (16%). The lower risk of a full-term breastfed child having abnormal scores for behaviour were also noted even when the researchers took into account other influences such as socio-economic or parental factors.

The authors concluded: “Our findings suggest that longer duration of breastfeeding (at all or exclusively) is associated with having fewer parent-rated behavioural problems in term children.”
109  EARLY LEARNING / Prenatal Education / Re: How To Play Music For Baby on: May 15, 2011, 10:47:04 AM
Saw this article in a local newspaper today.. Just sharing..

Datuk Dr Nor Ashikin Mokhtar is a consultant obstetrician & gynaecologist (FRCOG, UK).

You may have heard claims that prenatal music stimulation can promote intelligence, creativity and advanced development. The scientific jury is still out on this, because different studies show different results.

I GET a lot of questions from pregnant mothers about whether music is good for their unborn babies. Some mummies want their babies to be born musical geniuses, while others see it as a way to communicate and bond with their little ones.

While music is good for the foetus in the womb, mothers need to practise this in moderation and choose the right type of music.

Musical stimulation

Many experts believe that stimuli like sounds (voices and music), movement, pressure, vibrations and light can be used to communicate with a baby inside the womb, and encourage the baby’s physical, mental and sensory development.

The baby learns to recognise and respond to different stimuli, such as your voice. This not only promotes bonding between mother and baby, but also helps baby to develop memory.

You may have heard claims that prenatal music stimulation can promote intelligence, creativity and advanced development. The scientific jury is still out on this, because different studies show different results.

Some early childhood researchers argue that babies who have been stimulated while in the womb grow up to have more advanced visual, auditory, language and motor development skills. The researchers even say that the babies sleep better, are more alert to their environment and surroundings, and are far more content, compared to babies without prenatal stimulation.

Some research even suggests that exposure to music can make children smarter in maths and spatial reasoning, but these studies were carried out on older children, not on foetuses in the womb.

There are also a lot of anecdotal evidence from parents who are convinced that their babies recognise and respond to familiar music and voices while in the womb.

However, with such a differing range of evidence, it is not possible to confirm that music stimulation during pregnancy can contribute to a more intelligent child.

Still, there is no harm in exposing your unborn baby to a variety of musical stimulation, as it will be enjoyable and soothing for both you and baby.

Choosing the playlist

Just how do you play music for your baby in the womb? Do you put your iPod right next to your stomach, or just play the music in the background?

Both methods work, but you have to be careful not to overdo it or play it at an overly loud volume. If you are using an iPod or similar type of music player, you can connect a pair of headphones and stretch the headphones around your stomach.

However, because the music is up close, you should not turn the volume up or play beyond an hour a day. Otherwise, you may overstimulate the baby. Overstimulation will not harm your baby physically, but it can make him or her feel overwhelmed by the stimuli and stop responding.

You can also play music on your CD player in the background. Again, do not pump up the volume as you may hurt or startle your baby. The maximum volume should not be more than 70 decibels, which is about the same level as background music that is played in a store.

The type of music you choose is also important. There are a lot of baby music products in the market, mostly within the classical music genre. Certainly, some experts recommend Mozart’s symphonies because they have the right mix of new sounds and repetition.

Generally, discordant, chaotic music or vulgar lyrics are not considered suitable, with some experts saying that it could negatively alter the brain’s structure.

The real role of music

If you do decide to make your pregnancy a musical journey, be realistic about your motivations and expectations.

Don’t do it with the aim of creating a musical or intellectual genius. As I mentioned, there is no concrete scientific evidence to show that this will happen, and you will be setting yourself up for disappointment.

Instead, look purely at the enjoyable qualities of music. Pregnancy can bring about mood swings or stressful moments, so playing music could help you to relax and indirectly be good for your unborn baby.

If you’re feeling down or anxious, listening to your favourite jazz song could cheer you up. A bit of dancing could take the weight off your shoulders too, as long as it’s nothing too vigorous.

So let the music play, and heal your soul.

112  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Why I Avoid Classical Piano Training for My Daughter (+ Little Musician Update) on: May 13, 2011, 05:30:12 AM
A good read!
I myself is a product of Yamaha. My mum signed me up for YAMAHA classes (started with Junior Music Course) when i was 5-6 yrs old. I was with Yamaha for more than 6 yrs before I decided to quit (against mum's will of course.. I was more interested in outdoor activities like Girl Guides & sports after i started high school Cool) Now, I can still play (simple pieces lar  nowink ) and believe my music training helped me to excel in other aspects as well.

From what I went through, what made Yamaha different from the other training methods (that my friends in school were going through) were their emphasises on
- solfege
- sight reading
- improvisation
- hearing
- NO theory exams (not until you are way advance)

I still remember one mum shared that she sent her 2 daughters to 2 different music schools. One came home singing Do Re Mi Fa So.. and anonther was siginging A B Cs ! imagine her confusion :P

Cant wait to find out more on Little Musician! yay
