106  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Formulas for Encyclopedic Knowledge on: November 19, 2008, 11:56:33 AM
by the way does everyone know how to make poi?
in the book GD gives a very simple formula for each of the categories
so you just have to fill in the blanks as you find the information for each bit
if anyone doesn't have the Encyclopedic Knowledge book i would be happy to post the formulas for the ten categories

Help!!!   ohmy

Can anyone explain the "formulas" for Encyclopedic Knowledge?

Thank you.

Thank you Tatianna for sharing your experiences. I believe that the more we all know about what has worked and not worked the more prepared we will be when we need to modify our programs to accommodate our ever changing children.

From what I have read I think you are doing a fantastic program with your daughter. One day soon I am sure you will be there when the bright light goes on inside her and you know for sure that all of your fun times together teaching math have paid off.

There are so many of these magical times ahead for you. One of my most treasured moments was a cold grey Sunday earlier this year when Penny, who was 3 at the time, dragged her little chair over to where her Daddy and I were sitting and ran to get "The Cat in the Hat". She sat down and said "Daddy, I am going to read this to you." and she did. It was beautiful.  smile

Hello Tatianna,

I enjoy reading your art POIs. Thank you for sharing them.

I have started making country POIs for my daughter Penny who loves maps at the moment because her Nana and Pa flew to the UK recently and Grandma has set off to see the East Coast of Australia in her motor home.

After reading about Encyclopedic Knowledge in the Doman book "How to Multiply Your Baby's Intelligence" I am still a little in the dark about what you mean when you refer to the "formulas".

by the way does everyone know how to make poi?

Could you please explain more about them.

Hello nhockaday,

My daughter loved to play games like you described above from about two and a half to three years of age. She would place her zoo animals in a line and ask them "what's this word?". It is so cute when little children start doing this.

We also played games like helping her animals find their homes while pretending that the flash cards were the homes. This was extremely successful with all sorts of toys and other unbreakable items.

Have fun,

Mum.

Thank you Elizabeth and Chris for sharing your thoughts and conclusions on this topic with the BrillKids community.

After reading the book “How To Teach Your Baby Math” it was not clear to me why young children were taught numerals so early when the dot cards were being used so successfully to teach quantity and teach what to many people are quite complex math concepts. I thought that it would only aid their loss of quantity recognition and surely they would become familiar with numerals without a lot of instruction from us just as my daughter works out the sounds when reading by herself. Watching the “How To Teach Your Baby Math” DVD did not make this clearer.

So thank you for explaining to me how the whole math program fits together.

Tatianna, could you please explain what you believe you have done to date that has resulted in your daughter not really mastering math. How long have you been doing the math program with your daughter? How many sets of quantity do you do in a typical day? How many equations do you show in a typical day? How many days a week do you enjoy math with your daughter?

I am asking because I am just about to recommence the math program with my son Hayden and I was planning to do less sets a day then set out in the book and DVD, but after reading what Elizabeth and Chris have learnt in the past week about the “deadline” for undertaking the numerals section of the course I will try my best to do more sets a day than I have planned.

I am truely thankful,

Mum.

Thank you Brenda. I will definately look into "Teach your baby French".

We have just started listening to the "Hop, Skip, and Sing French" CD from McGraw Hill. It has many very short lessons, which is great for my little ones and it is a lot of fun. But be warned, because of all the actions and dancing it is not the best CD for car trips.  laugh

Have fun,
Mum.
112  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: maths equations on: October 12, 2008, 11:15:09 PM
Hi Tanikit

I am in the same boat as you with my little boy who is almost the same age as your child. After about 8 days of math he was not interested in any more than one or two dot cards (even though he loves the reading, maybe because I put at least one family member in each reading set and he is excited to see their photos).

I have actually taken a break from dots while I compile a list of tips on how to make math fun. All the tips so far on this site have been great but I know I need many more to start equations. I am not the exciting and funny parent in our home  blush

I even ordered the "How To Teach Your Baby Math" DVD from the US. It arrived today and I am hoping it will be filled with images that will help me make maths work with my son.

Maybe if everyone who is successfully teaching equations to a 1 year old could share just 1 of their ways of being silly and fun it would help us keep the math going long enough to do at least 1 equation a day while they are at this very short attention span age.

Thank you to everyone who has added a post regarding maths. I have enjoyed reading everything.

I would love to see many more French categories. My daughter and I are having an amazing time learning French together, primarily by listening to French songs and watching the TweedleWink Languages DVD. She knows so much more than me, which my husband thinks is great......  laugh  and so do I actually.

We would really love to see:

Wild animals

Well known nursery rhymes (For example, Baa baa black sheep and Hey diddle diddle. Actual singing is not required of course.)

Lots of daily conversation. I am sure that the following would be extremely popular:
* Going to the supermarket and discussing the types and quantities of fruits, vegetables and staple grocery items (milk, eggs, etc) on the shopping list.
* Cleaning the house and discussing the names of rooms and what needs dusting.
* Picking up and washing different items of clothes, their colours and owners.
* A child's bedtime routine, including putting away toys (dolls, cars, blocks, etc), cleaning teeth, having a bath and reading a storybook.
* Going to the beach.
* Going to the doctor.

Any new French category will be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

Mum.

You are most welcome iyph28.

Thank you KL, I have edited my downloads and saved them to your Math Library Downloads.

The categories I noticed appeared in the download list around the same period that I uploaded my first downloads. They are:
Category Spanish Food 1.cat
Category Czech Flowers 4.cat
Category Czech Flowers 3.cat

Is there anyone with French as their native language who can liaise with Alice and add the pronunciation sound files to her very cute French-Trasportation and very useful French-homethings in Word Flash Library Downloads (FOREIGN)?
117  Downloads + Collaborations Discussions / English Little Reader Lesson Downloads / Re: Math - Counting Various Objects such as Apples and Tigers on: September 18, 2008, 12:53:06 PM
Hello Everyone,

Thank you for your help with these downloads.

I have not been able to spend much time online during the last 3 weeks and therefore need to apologise for not updating the other math categories when the problem with Math - Counting Various Objects - One to Ten was solved back on 22 August.

Last night I finally edited the following categories. If you did have problems downloading them in the past, please try them again and don’t hesitate to let me know if you still have trouble.

Math - Counting Trucks - One to Ten
Check out http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=view;id=1156

Math - Counting Tigers - One to Ten
Check out http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=view;id=1155

Math - Counting Dogs - One to Ten
Check out http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=view;id=1154

Math - Counting Apples - One to Ten
Check out http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=view;id=1153

Questions for KL:

1. Do you want these files uploaded to the Math Library Downloads? I didn't even think of that library when I initially uploaded these categories and would be happy to put them elsewhere if that is what you require.

2. Since I began using Little Reader I have noticed that some non-English language categories have been in Little Reader - English Downloads. I have not found sufficient time to download many foreign language categories yet, so I have not worked out how these categories differ from those in Little Reader - Foreign Language Downloads. Could you please advise what the difference is (if any). Thank you.
118  BrillKids Software / HOW TOs and FAQs / Re: FAQ: Flash Mode Settings on: August 27, 2008, 06:12:37 AM
I remember the "Next Page Preview" function from when I initially started using Little Reader and have been trying to turn it back on today without any luck. Then I read this handy tip and noted that the next page preview only works for "Word only (Flash)" and "Picture only (Flash)".

I love using "Word, Media" with my 11 month old son, probably because I have had great success with YBCR and my daughter and I am most familiar with this style.

Is it possible for you to add the "Next Page Preview" to the other playback modes?

Of course you might need to change the name from "Next Page Preview" to "Next Word Preview".  smile
119  Downloads + Collaborations Discussions / English Little Reader Lesson Downloads / Re: Math - Counting Various Objects such as Apples and Tigers on: August 22, 2008, 04:43:42 AM
Thank you nhockaday and KL.

How bizzare. huh I created the nine.wav file in the same way and with the same Sound Recorder as all of the other wav files used in each of my "Math - Counting....." files. If the problem is with the nine.wav file I would have expected the same problem with each of my "Math - Counting ....." files as the nine.wav file is the same one in all of them.

That aside, I have deleted both of the audio files used for the number nine in "Math - Counting Various Items - One to Ten.cat" (ie. nine.wav and nine_balls.wav), recreated the files using the Sound Recorder, inserted them into the nine file in the Word Library, exported the category again and edited the download again.

See how you go at your end now.

Fingers crossed.

I do not know why the category download contained errors as it has always worked for me.  unsure Of course I never needed to download it!

I undertook the following steps and hope this has fixed the problem at your end:

(1) Deleted the category and the word files within the category from my Little Reader Word Library.
(2) Recreated the category and the word files in my Little Reader Word Library.
(3) Played the category and all is still fine at my end.
(4) Exported the category.
(5) Edited the Download and uploaded the new file.
(6) Downloaded the category and imported it as a "test category".
(7) Played the "test category" at my end with no problems.

Could you please attempt to download the category again and let me know if you still experience problems.

Thank you,
Mum.
