EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Can genius be learned or is it preordained?

After this discussion I decided to teach physics to my son (2 years). He is studying properties of materials all the time since his first months! I will teach mechanics, my husband (doctor in physics) will teach electronics etc. Basics of physics can be explained with simple experiments so we are going to have fun Strength of my girl (4 years) will be logical thinking. Because we discuss reasons, differences and processes a lot.

My opinion. We all see that toddlers have different interests. Some want to play with cars only, others like dolls, etc.
My kids do not play with dolls or cars; daughter wants games with talking and son wants mechanisms. Probably, they by themselves are developing particular skills which later will show up as "talent".
If I will press my daughter to study devices for 1000 hours she probably will hate me. However that would be very good for my son. And in opposite.
This aspect is not covered in talent research. I think, talent = deep interest + practice. Let's look for the interest at first.

very interesting discussion. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1131149Children's resemblance to their biological and adopting parents in two ethnic groups. (2) there was no significant correlation between the midparent social-education rank of the adopting parents and their adopted children's IQ, and (3) there was a strong correlation between the midparent social-education rank of the biological parents and their children's individual intelligence ranks. Currently I am reading "Talent is overrated. Thank you Chris1! Here I read that IQ often does not correlate with outstanding performance and with "talent", so all of you are right

Steiner (Waldorf pedagogy) says that pushing to learn is allowed after the changing of first teeth. So, 5 - 7 years.
While reading your discussion I remembered (and translated) a post from our local parenting forum.
"I am the only daughter of my mother. But in reality she does not have children. Because my childhood disappeared in psychological and physical terror, to press me to visit music school (talent). I finished. I do not play, do not sing, and do not meet my mother if not particularly necessary."
I also have a friend who had brilliant early education (she was reading at two, etc.). Now she does not like to meet her mother because mother continues to have opinion on how she should live. My friend is now preparing to change her profession, from mothers influenced to what she likes - practical work with horses.
So I know the risks. We must know when to stop.

Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Question on powerpoint: how to get tittle before the picture.

Dear all.
In typical powerpoint slide, there is a picture and name.
(Currently, I do not use the classical approach where pictures and names are in separate slides, because my kid does some editing.)
In slideshow, I see the picture first, and than name. Or both together. There is a possibility to change sequence of texts or to change sequence of pictures. But I did not find the possibility to show name before the picture. Within one slide. Can anybody help me?

Oana86,
I was against the early education, too. I knew that babies can read - but I thought that early education makes children unhappy and depressed. I knew several examples with clever and depressed people. Including me. My husband said that teaching letters before age 5 can not harm but I did not agree.
Situation changed when Douglas Doman visited my city with a short lecture. I went to this lecture to see what I am criticizing. He changed my mind.
What can help with persons like previous me?
- stories about the growing brains etc can help. - studies and statistics about the early readers who stay ahead in school. - studies about early learners 20 - 30 years later. - in G.Doman books, there are many motivating stories. about a kid who was delayed but than he learned to read and later was about the average in school and in college.
videos with reading and calculating kids would not help for persons like me. typical parents see them as horror stories how heartlessly can kids be treated.

Thanks, Skylark, I already found Luntik and BBC animals Our situation is a bit different. We are monolingual Latvian family living in Latvia. Our daughter (4.5) goes in Latvian group in Russian kindergarten. Officially, everything is in Latvian here, but all the staff are Russians, and also some 30% of children are Russians or bilingual. It is her second year here, she still does not understand Russian but now she is very interested in learning it. She needs some "critical mass" to start understand. In Latvian schools, Russian is taught very badly and I think that now is her only possibility to learn Russian

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: which one to learn first? math or reading

I vote for math. You will have several years to teach reading. But the ability to learn Doman math is decreasing with every day. And the interest on such learning is decreasing. I think you should start today . According to my experience, it will be hard to keep the interest after 12 months, and almost useless after 18 months. Math software. You do not need it with 6 months old child because they are happy to watch black dots. Older children need more entertainment which is provided by LM. But you can try paper or powerpoint at first. Of course, you can do math and reading, and EK together. Most of mothers do. Until 12 months, my kid was very interested in art; now he has no interest on it. I just wanted to say that it can be a mistake, to teach math AFTER reading.

Well. I already purchased Little Pim Russian. Key is still free Another question. Can you recommend animation movies to learn Russian? I mean simple movies with slow and simple speech. Like Peppa Pig or Muzzy in English.

Dear all! I have one unused Little Reader Basic license key. Initially, there are two license keys, and the software costs 149 USD. I used LR for 3 years and I still do not need that second key. I would like to get Little Pim Russian 3-pack (costs 44 USD) for it. Digital or other. Would you like to swap? I am located in Latvia, Europe. You can answer Russian. I understand but can not write

I also have a question on LP coupons. I would like to purchase "Russian 3-Pak" digital download. Can I use 3 coupons for this 3-pack set? Another choice is to buy each disc separately; I will loose much money on transactions. upd. The problem is solved, I purchased single items.
