EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: My child seems bored, what can I do?

That really sounds like a lot of cards. I realize you are following the program, but maybe it is a bit too much. Also, how often are you showing a card before retiring it? I know they say to do it several times but your son may be getting it much quicker and you are just boring him by showing him things more than once. Have you noticed if he it makes a difference if you are using new words?
Also, are you ready to try showing him Little Reader/PowerPoint instead of just cards? My son doesn't like flashcards but he would sit at the computer for hours if I let him looking at the bits on the computer.
Every little bit you do makes a difference, so just realize you don't have to be perfect to be helping your son learn.

I haven't read all these posts because there are a lot of them.
I am doing whole words with my son but I taught him his letters before reading the Doman books. It was natural to just make the sound and ask him what letter the word started with. It has been very easy for him. He is rarely wrong and if he is it is a c/k word or something similar. Or, he picks out another sound in the word and tells me that instead of the first letter. I guess knowing whole words has made it easy for him because he can pick out the sounds in words he definitely doesn't know.
I guess we are going with the little of both approach.
He also brings up a good point. Y and W are confusing. W makes a "y" sound yet, it is a W. It is a "double u" but really it is written as "double v." If I could re-do the alphabet I would change that.

My son is 22 months and still breastfeeding. I've tried cow's milk several times and several ways and he wants nothing to do with the "yucky" milk. My friends suggested mixing it with whole milk vanilla yogurt, and warming the mixture up initially.
Have you looked into raw milk? It is much healthier than regular cow's milk. Luckily, we can get it where we live, not everyone is that lucky.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: How to teach phone numbers and address to kids?

I agree with just getting him to repeat it. I'm thinking of just doing cards with the address and phone number on it. We are moving next week so I'm not sure of either of those so I have been putting it off.
My son surprised me by knowing how to spell our last name. This was months ago, long before we really started actively learning things. Our name is difficult and I always have to spell it and one day I heard him spelling it. I don't think he knew what he was spelling but he sure knew how to spell it.
Yesterday he learned to spell Mississippi because he thought it sounded cool and kept asking me to say it.
Addresses and phone numbers are definitely important things to teach.

BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / what happens when your license expires?
|
on: March 12, 2009, 06:49:24 PM

We are enjoying Little Math but I want to use points to buy it. I know it says you can only use points through the end of the month and I don't think I will have enough in time.
I'm wondering what happens when your license expires. Can you still use it like Little Reader Lite where you can't upload or download, but it still works, or, are you unable to use it at all?
Any idea if you will be able to pay with points after the end of the month?

I don't have an issue with the quality, I just wish he liked it. We watch a video each morning while I check my email and this morning he said he didn't want one. I've been playing it the last 3 days so I know it is because he didn't want that one. I bought 2 of them so I'm going to make sure he watches them both, but I don't think I'll be getting any more. We got a Brainy Baby from the library yesterday and he is sitting there mesmorized by it right now. He also loves the YBCR.
I'm so disappointed because I like the idea of this series - guess I need to find something else.

Thanks for posting about that. I really HATE Office 2007. I saved it as an older file and uploaded it again so you should be able to see it normally now. I promise that the titles are all lined up and it is of good quality, so please try to download it again. I'll try to remember to save everything in this older format in the future so it isn't an issue again.
