EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Tweedlewink math along with doman method
|

Since I posed this we have decided to buy the whole tweedlewink series. I am still doing the dot cards but we don't do them every day. I am going to do what shenli said and also use other things not just dots for the cards. See if she is more interested that way. Now that you said too much repeatition can make the left brain kick in I have to ask this: my daughter didn't like doing the doman flashing method for reading. Then we made our way. I put words up on the wall with a picture of the word next to it. Then after we review the words enough I take the picture down and leave only the word for a few more days, reviewing them again and them retire them. She reads them herself, that why I like to put them on the wall. I am a spaz and will have every intention of going over cards every day, many times a day. But with the words on the wall they are there and we won't forget. My question is: is this too much? I know this is working for us, she can read more than 50 words now. And she is using some phonics too. Her cousin gave her his old leap frog videos and she loves them. Just wondering what input you have about this shenli? Thanks... U always answer my questions : )

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Little math??

When I bring out the dot cards she likes to have her barbies "eat" them. Lol. I flash the # so that she sees it then she makes her barbies pretend to eat them. She decides what flavor they are, . I don't know if she is really getting it but we have fun. And we don't do it every day. She doesn't love it as much as reading : )

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Little math??

I am thinking of purchasing LM. I was wanting some stories about it from those who have used it. Why is it called the starter kit? Are they working on more? If so will you have to purchase the product again? How do you like it? Did you buy the box set? How often do you have to use it every day? My daughter will be 3 in august, is it too late for her? And anything else I am not asking that you think would be good to know. Thanks. Love you ladies

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / I am new to early childhood education
|
on: April 18, 2010, 06:52:07 AM

I have a 2 1/2 yo, and 6 mo old. I just recently started some early childhoo education with my girls. My older daughter has always been advanced without my tryin to teach her anything. So after her showing me she is capable of so much more I have started putting more effort into their education early on. I wish I started sooner. We are YBCR, tweedlewink, and doman math method right now. I am wondering what else I should work on with them. I have plenty of time to spend because I am a Sahm and try to spend all of my time with them. I am just nieve and don't realize what else their is out there. Lol

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Anyone live in Washington state?
|
on: April 18, 2010, 06:38:42 AM

I was wondering if anyone lives on the west coast of Washington, near Tacoma or Seattle? I have 2 girls, 2 1/2 and 6 mos. I would love some parents to get together with and have playdates and parent playdates. Lol. I always feel like other parents feel I am acting like my daughter is better than theirs. My daughter is advanced, yes, and their is nothing I can do about it. I hardly ever mention all the things she is doing, because it makes them feel awkward. But she actually is behind a lot of the kids I see on here. I just recently started a few months ago teaching her reading and math. She has always been advanced. But I, being nieve, didn't realize how much young children can actually learn. So she was always bored. I taught her body parts, letters, shapes, colors, and she amazed me with how quickly she learned them. But now she is doing so amazing. I just want someone I can talk to about early childhood education with. And not think I am bragging about my daughter. I an simply fascinated by their little minds.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: YBCR v LR?

I am also curious to see what other parents have to say about this. But as for me I purchased YBCR before I heard about LR. I wishi had bought LR instead because of all the good things I hear. But we do not have the money. We already spent a lot of money on YBCR. It is working well for us tho. My daughter can now sight read many words, and using those as examples I am teaching her phonics now. Does anyone have LR that would be willing to sell it cheap?

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Effect of Early Learning when Child Reaches School

Where do you live? My husband and I were talking to a neighbor the other day. He has a few grandkids who were able to read before they started school and they were bumped up a grade. They do that regularly now. And if the school doesn't mention it I'm sure you will insist on it. And for good reason. Parents like us try to give our kids stimulation all the time. And when they go to school and recieve no real stimulation they get bored and start to hate school. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just look for a good school.

My daughter is 31 months and also loves books. She will ask me to read 100 books a day if I let her. But I have another baby and a house to keep clean so sometimes I can't. I try to read a book everytime she asks. But at night she wants me to read an endless amount. Lol. I just have to firmly tell her no, and it is time for bed. She also has waken in the middle of the night and wants me to read to her. It's just a phase. I'm sure she will always love to read. But at this age the rely on us for everything. Dakota has a light in her room that is bright enough to read by but not so bright it keeps her awake. I let her read to herself til she falls asleep if she wants. GL, and congrats on that smart little cookie you have : )

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: How to keep baby busy?
|

When I had just one baby it was a lot easier to get free time. Lol. When Dakota was a baby she really was never very happy just being alone not doing anything interesting. She always wanted to be doing something new. If at all possible do what needs to be done outside. She LOVED being outside. As I'm sure yours does. We bought a bubble maker last summer. That was a big hit. We also have a pool of balls, but a lot of people have those. I dunno, just different toys I guess. But they always get bored of them and need something new again. Lol

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Schedule for a 9 Month Old?
|
on: April 11, 2010, 03:38:52 AM

She is talking early, I bet your proud. As for a schedule: I didn't start doing real educational methods until a couple of months ago. I have a 2 1/2 yo and a 6 mo. I taught my oldest shapes, colors, letters, letter sounds and some encyclopedic knowledge when she was younger. But I didn't realize until recently how much they can actualy grasp at such a young age. But now we are doing YBCR every day, tweedlewink every day, and I do the doman math method with my oldest. I also try to do as much sign language as I can throughout the day. But I'm still learning too. Lol. So we really don't have a sevschedule. I just try to make sure I do all of these every day. And do whatever other activities I think of for fun learning. But I don't stress if we end up being too busy and miss something one day. I am proud to say my oldest can now read more than 50 words. And she is starting to incorporate some phonics. I bet she can read more, cuz our house is labeled and I haven't included those in the words she can read. I can't wait to see my youngest is at this age. GL

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / How to teach more than 1 baby?
|
on: April 09, 2010, 04:34:44 PM
|
To those mommies with more than one child. I know that we all don't spend the entire day doing our learning activities. I was just wondering if you break up the time you spend doing these activities? Like concentrating on one while the other(s) are napping? Or show them flash cards together, or whatever it may be. I noticed that most people here only have one child, so I am wondering if you other mommies have any tips or ideas. Right now I feel like I am focusing more on my older daughter, and just showing my baby videos (YBCR, tweedlewink). Sometimes I feel I am neglecting her learning experience.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Parenting is not about flash cards

I agree Flashmom11, eveytime I try to bring up the fact that I am using some sort of brain stimulation or early childhood education for my girls I get rude responses. No I an not trying to say my child or myself as a mother are "better" than anyone. I am simply trying to talk about my love for my children and my adventure in trying to give them the best that I can.
