My son's favourite is the trucks. I particularly like the various objects (the balls are outstanding  laugh) and the apples (a bit more interesting for us parents than plain red dots  wacko).

Hello karli,

I have uploaded my Math "dots" (used very loosely as they are actually animals, food, vehicles, etc) which you can find at

http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=view;id=1157

This last one is especially for you. It has some red apples as you requested above. I haven't made a motorcycles category, but you might like my trucks category. The trucks have red on them too so I thought they were good to use with my baby.
123  Downloads + Collaborations Discussions / English Little Reader Lesson Downloads / Re: Children's Story - Penny's Day at the Park on: August 20, 2008, 12:30:25 PM
Thank you KL.

I was going to get Penny to help me with the voices before I uploaded the story, but it is quite a challenge getting her to speak at just the right time and volume using the Sound Recorded and I haven’t found the time yet. From reading your Useful Resources Section I think it will be much easier after my Hubby gives me a lesson on Audacity. I will wait until then to add her voice to the file. From our point of view this will make the voice recordings even better.

I hope the accent is not causing too many problems. I could attempt to put on a foreign accent but everyone who knows me tells me how ridiculous my various attempts at this sound.
124  Downloads + Collaborations Discussions / English Little Reader Lesson Downloads / Children's Story - Penny's Day at the Park on: August 18, 2008, 11:25:42 PM
I have uploaded a story that I wrote for the contest and for my little girl Penny. I hope your children enjoy it too.

125  The BrillKids Forum / Contests / Re: CONTEST: Write a Children's Story! on: August 18, 2008, 01:34:46 PM
I wrote this story last week after we enjoyed a day at the park. My three year old daughter, Penny, loved the story the first two times that I read it to her. I explained that the story was all about her and that she was the happy girl speaking in the story.

However, five minutes later she was not very happy. She came up and told me that she did not have a vegemite sandwich and Daddy did not have a donut. I explained to her that when writing a story for other people I have to change the story a little to make it more fun for them because they could not actually be with us and have fun at the park. This eventually made her happy again and off she went to play.

The next time we are going to visit “the duck park” as Penny calls it, I shall have to remember to pack the picnic fare included in the story so that I can take photos and attach them to Little Reader for my children to enjoy.

Download the story at http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=view;id=1106

126  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Anyone get results from Doman Math Method? on: August 18, 2008, 04:44:04 AM
Thank you pupisek, DomanMom and KL. You have all been extremely kind and patient answering our questions about cards vs computer screen.

The reason that I needed clarification on this point is that I have not been able to work out why the Institute has not embraced modern technology (ie. the internet) and started to share this truly amazing teaching method with as many parents as possible. I for one am very thankful to Dr Titzer for bringing his method of teaching reading to my notice while my first child was still young, but I am sad that I will not have the opportunity to introduce math to her with the same method that I now know of and will use with my 11 month old son.

I am looking forward to Little Math to see how I can use it with each child.

In the mean time, does anyone know of any wonderful math websites that a 3 or 4 year old would find entertaining? Perhaps something like the reading activities at http://www.starfall.com/n/level-k/index/load.htm?f which my 3 year old has loved for sometime now and the website I must credit for helping me find this brilliant software.

I don't know about you, but I like to spend as little time in the kitchen as possible and still enjoy delicious family meals.

I thought it would be fun to and hopefully helpful to share some of our cooking success stories.

What meal that you enjoy (a very important criteria) preparing meets all of the following criteria?

- easy enough for a beginner to make,
- super quick preparation,
- very healthy, and last but not least,
- yummy.

Here is a link to one of my current favourites

and I also occassionally cook this fast meal from the same website

Thank you again DomanMom.

It is most encouraging to hear from a mum who is using the process, it helps to convince those doubtful dads too.  laugh

And as a mum I know how precious your time is, so thank you for taking time away from your family to help all the mums, dads and other carers here.
130  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Anyone get results from Doman Math Method? on: August 14, 2008, 12:29:05 PM
Hello DomanMom,

Thank you for sharing the wonderful experiences and difficulties you have had introducing math to your son Hunter.

I have been teaching my son Hayden to read since he was 4 months of age using YBCR and recently Little Reader and I am keen to get started teaching him math. I agree it is the preparation of each day's program that takes up all the time. My husband thinks it is very amusing that it takes much longer to find my son and bring him to the computer or cards then it does to show him the 5 words.

Could you please let me know if it is important (especially in the early stages) to use 11" x 11" cards.

I note that you switched to the computer for equations. Have you noticed the same result using the computer and A4 size paper?

I am tossing up whether to use the large cumbersome cards. For reading I use YBCR DVDs, Little Reader on the computer and the relatively small hand written cards that I prepared when my daughter started YBCR 2 years ago, long before I was aware of the Doman method of teaching.

I also live in Australia and have experienced difficulties (already noted by at least one other frustrated Aussie member on this forum) getting timely replies (or even any reply at all) to my email enquiries to the US and Singapore for DVDs and kits.

Thank you again for your invaluable information.
131  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Anyone get results from Doman Math Method? on: August 13, 2008, 04:26:50 AM
Hang in there Redheaded1. Nhockaday is right. You need a little more faith when starting YBCR with very small babies.

When I met Dr Titzer a couple of months ago he explained that it takes about 6 months before you notice that your baby knows some of the words. I started showing my second baby, Hayden, YBCR videos at 4 months and it is only in the last 6 or so weeks  (after 5 to 6 months of viewing) that I am sure he is able to actually recognise words.

As soon as I learnt about YBCR in mid 2006 I ordered the videos and started showing them to my daughter who was 21 months. As Penny was much older then Hayden when starting the process, I was able to see very quickly that she was learning to read the words and it was no effort at all to make up games involving her toys to teach her many other words. She actually learnt new words in just 2 or 3 days.

It is such a joy to see her reading books now. Except for that short "stage" she had when she adopted the Dr Seuss line "I can read it all by myself" and I couldn't enjoy books with her as she kept tellling me to go away.  confused

I haven't started the Doman Math Method yet with Hayden, but I have started my planning and am very excited about that journey too.
132  Parents' Lounge / Forum Games / Re: Forum Game: Getting to Know You on: August 12, 2008, 06:14:52 AM
^ My toothbrush. For some reason I am an overly keen teeth cleaner.  big grin

> I was in labour (one of those words we spell differently here) for 20 minutes with my second child. He was born in the hallway upstairs in our home. My Hubby (and my lifesaver too) tells everyone that he delivered his son. I tell them he just caught him!

v What is your baby or small child's favourite book?
133  Downloads + Collaborations Discussions / English Little Reader Lesson Downloads / Bears category on: August 11, 2008, 01:43:10 AM
Today I uploaded a category for bears which includes names, images, pronunciations and cute descriptions for brown bear, polar bear, teddy bear (this shows the gorgeous bear my Mum made for my daughter), sun bear, panda bear, black bear and teddy bears.

You can choose from my 3 year old daughter’s voice, mine, or of course make your own audio files. My daughter has a wonderful time making the Little Reader categories with me and then hearing her voice on “her game”.

Check out http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=view;id=994

I encourage you to make your own adorable Bears – 2.cat file with photos of your children’s toy bears and bears from their favourite story books. They will treasure Little Reader even more with loads of their special “friends” (as my daughter calls them) on the screen.
134  Downloads + Collaborations Discussions / English Little Reader Lesson Downloads / Australia – States and Territories on: August 11, 2008, 01:37:11 AM
This category contains names, maps and pronunciations for Australia and all of the states and territories including, Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia.

Check out http://forum.brillkids.com/downloads/?sa=view;id=992

I cannot believe I am teaching my 3 year old all of this reference material. I am so amazed with her everyday. She certainly laps up everything I show and tell her. We are always commenting at how the questions she asks show that her brain is going at a million miles an hour. Like yesterday's questions, "Mummy is Nanny a widow now?" and "Mummy why is the water in my glass clear?". They are adorable aren't they, and fabulous entertainment too!  smile

Go here to share the questions you have been bombarded with recently http://forum.brillkids.com/coffee-corner/children-and-their-amazing-non-stop-questions/

135  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Children and their amazing non-stop questions on: August 11, 2008, 01:35:30 AM
We are amazed at our 3 year old daughter every waking moment and always commenting at how the questions she asks show that her brain is going at a million miles an hour. For instance, yesterday's questions included:

1. "Mummy is Nanny a widow now?". Where did she learn that word? I really must pay more attention when I am reading to her.

2. "Mummy why is the water in my glass clear?". I’m not a scientist but I suppose Daddy and I should be able to come up with an acceptable explanation between us.

Our children are adorable aren't they, and fabulous entertainment too!  smile

I thought it would be fun for us all to share and also record some of our children’s questions here. So please share your favourites or just the ones they stumped you with yesterday.
