EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: My 22 m old can swim Freestyle but can't read

mine swam very early also and were very good physically , excellent language skill , early speech , but other than my first child who is brain ijured quadriplegic who did leanr to read the doman way and was speed reader , many languages ... i thought i got it all and it will be easy peaszy for me to teach the next two . i was so wrong , none of them learn to read with whole word method , i still continue exposing them to workd and flashcards and pictures , and BK and power points presentations which i do believe helped them develop their advance speech and comprehension , but they were three and still not reading , with my second i followed doman recommendation and didn't expose her to phonics and teach her letter sounds at all , but at three i knew i need to do somthing else so i used dad dude cards , montessori phonetic learning ( games ) and teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons . lessons took 10 minutes beofre nap , and within few months she was reading everything , i never had to teach her sight words , we never did ealry leveled readers , i got bob books they were not interesting for her . She always loved books but wanted meaty content , she will hod the sam book and knowing she can read s a m sam s a t sat , she woudn;t make an effort and go on telling her own story inspired by the picture . from 100 easy lessons she just read with me whatver book we were reading , first few lines , than a page , and now she enjoys reading chapter books . That was a good learnign expeirence for me so with my third one i still flashed words but i exposed him to letter sounds through letter factory , starfall , and he started blending and sounding out very early , but didn't read spontaneously so like his sister we are working now with 100 easy lessons . he is giving me hard time because he is never serious and too playful , so what is suppose ot be 10 minuted session before nap akes longer because he is playing doing cartwheels on the bed and just acting up silly . i know he knows a lot more than he is willing to show me , he is just playful . when he sees a word like hot , he will look at it smile and than say mama let us read this word in a different way , maybe we can say toh instead , isn't it funny oh let me see maybe if we add an a it will become ... actually maybe lack of discipline from me , i wonder how much and how you can discipline a 3 years old , i am now bribing him instead . he is just too playful , and his sister too , They are very chatty , anything we do takes for ever because they stop and talk about it , tell other stories . wonder how strict a parent should be with those young learners . viv

i took doman program in philadelphia years ago and physical excellence is one of my priorities together with early learning . now that my kids are three and six i found out about a beautiful physical education program specially designed for homeschoolers http://www.familytimefitness.com/fitness4homeschool/FitnessPlatinumPackageUpgrade.php i bought the core level and really like it , it is so easy to do with different age kids , get you out and moving . my kids run swim brachiate jump trampoline , cycle ,... so my husband first wondered if we really need such program , now he loves it . i encourage you go to their site and read through , you can also download first week for free , all the lessons have you tube videos to explain how to do the exercises , and my kids enjoy watching other kids and get very motivated. Also a great idea to organize sort of sport club so your kids friends can join in , you can organize a small group of few kids to do it together . I didn't do it yet but i am really considering it . viv

oh i get them from many sites i love the site that keri shared , i use it , i use also 1+1+1 blog , and confession of a homeschooler . But mostly i like to use them for my scanned kumon books that i got on amazon and scanned to use with my second child . you see i live in gambia and it is always big trouble to ship stuff from overseas . Now I am wondering if it is worth printing them out ,, would be cheaper to buy them than printing them , but if i can use them on the ipad that would be perfect . i am happy to share my copies of kumon with you if you like . viv

keri could you please tell me more about your math adventure with Alex . When you say you flew through level A rightstart . Is Alex able at her age to do the math the way rightstart recommend , no counting the beads on the abacus , recognizing them by sight ?? my little boy 3 still want to count and this is keeping us from progressing to new lessons . Also there is a lot fo talk on the group about saxon math and memorizing arithm facts , equations ,... i am following right start math and we are half way through level B . I wonder if it is wise to just make them memorize the multiplication table as a song now that they are young and able to memorize anything , or i should wait till it comes in rightstart program . on this subject , i know you got Alex so much math material , do you have anything that can teach skip counting in a fun way ?? songs ?? dvd ?? my kids mastered skip counting by 2 5 and 10 but i like to work on the others .
so is saxon something worth looking at ?? compared to singapore , rightstart and all the others ? love viv

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: do you use a kindle for electronic reading with your kiddos ??

i am hosting private gymnastic class once a week for my daughter and 2 of her friends . The dad came with his ipad and kindle and it was an occasion to chat about it and try both . I asked him about kindle fire he said if i consider kindle i shouldn't go for kindle fire , it is just a cheap version of tablet i will be getting something similar to ipad but not as good , if i really want the reading qualities of a kindle i should go for regular kindle . onlt then i found out kindle is only black and white and my kids still enjoy illustrated colorful books , so kindle would be good for long novel when color is no longer important . he himself showed me how much he is enjoying reading his national geographic magazine on his ipad , the kindle couldn't be goo for that .
now can somebody please tell me why i am not receiving anymore updates on the topics i follow in bk . i only get the digest . So i have to come to the site and search if there is any reply on the topic i am following . thanks viv

if you own a kindle , can you please share how you use it with your kids ?? I am really considering getting one for my kids like that i don't have to worry about where to store our growing home library , save on shipping , ability to enlarge the font for our EL , instant access to dictionary for those unfamiliar words ... i read that it is better for reading than an ipad . please share viv
