137  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Picture resolution on: March 25, 2009, 03:40:12 AM
Hi MIP1999,

There are various ways to create a blank image, depending on what image software you have available.  I'll provide some resizing instructions for Microsoft Paint as it is a default program that comes with Windows XP and Vista. smile

To resize your image:

1. Open Microsoft Paint by going to your Start Menu, All Programs, Accessories, Paint.
2. In Paint, go to the File Menu in the top-left, and select Open.  Navigate to the image you would like to adjust and click Open.
3. If you look at the corners of your image it will have small grey boxes that you may click and drag to enlarge the image to whatever size you prefer.  Alternatively, if you know your screen size (e.g. 1024 x 768 resolution) you may go to the Image menu and select the Attributes option.  In the dialogue window that pops up you may specify the exact image size.
4. Now that you've enlarged the image you'll note that your original picture has remained in the top left.  To move the original picture to the centre of your enlarged area, click on the Selection tool from the list of paint tools.  It should look like a dotted rectangle.
5. With the selection tool, click and drag a box around your original picture.  If you've made a mistake with your selection, simply click once outside of the selection box to cancel it and you may click and drag a new box.
6. Once you are happy with your selection, click INSIDE the selection and you may drag it to any position you like.
7. To save your new image, go to the File Menu and click Save As to save your new, larger image under a new file name.  If you would like to overwrite your original image you may simply select the Save option.

With regards to your e-mail notifications, kindly go to http://forum.brillkids.com/index.php?action=subscription_e and have a look at your settings under "My Forum Mail".  If you would like notifications every time a user replies, you may select the "Per topic or board reply + Daily Digest" option.  smile

I hope resizing the image isn't too confusing, if you have any further problems do let me know. smile

Cheers,
shuki
138  BrillKids Software / HOW TOs and FAQs / How to Customise Playback on: March 23, 2009, 06:41:18 AM
How to Customize Playback

Little Math allows you to fully customize the playback of all your library files.  Settings are built in to enable you to show number flash or dot flash presentations, as well as multimedia presentations.

To adjust these settings, go to the playback screen.  All of the settings for playback are situated in the Preset Preview panel on the right, and the Play Panel at the bottom of the screen.

The Preset Preview Panel

The Preset Settings

The upper section of the Preset Preview Panel shows a preview of the Preset Settings of the Preset you currently have selected.  To adjust these settings, click on the Settings button on the right.

If you have a NUMBERS Preset selected, the settings available to you will include:

   •  Numbers or Custom - In Custom mode you may type in your own customized list of numbers to display.
   •  Number Range - In Numbers mode, these sliders allow you to adjust the range of possible numbers to flash to your child during the presentation.
   •  Number of Displays - This setting allows you to choose how many different numbers you want to show to your child in one presentation.
   •  Order - This dictates whether your number range will play forwards, backwards or at random.

If you have a MATH Preset selected, the settings available to you will include:

   •  Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division or Custom - In Custom mode you may type in your own customized list of equations to display.
   •  Number Range - In other specified Math modes, these sliders allow you to adjust the range of possible numbers to use on the left side of equations during the presentation.
   •  How many integers on left side of equation? - This option allows you to adjust the complexity of equations to display to your child.  For example, if you choose 2 integers in an addition Preset, then equations will have two numbers added together to form a result, such as 2 + 2 = 4.  If you choose 5 integers, then equations will have five numbers, such as 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10.
   •  Max Value of Solution - This additional control, allows you to limit how big the result of an equation can be.  For example, with a number range of 0 to 10, equations such as “10 + 10 = 20” are still possible, but with the Max Value of Solution set to 10, you can still maintain the number range without having equations too large or too complicated for your little one’s level.
   •  Number of Equations - This setting allows you to choose how many different equations you want to show to your child in one presentation.

The Display Settings

The lower section of the Preset Preview Panel provides a real-time preview of what your actual Displays will look like.  To change your Display settings, simply click on the SETTINGS button on the right.  Alternatively, when in your Preset Settings window you may switch to Display settings via the tabs at the top of the window.

When modifying Number Presets, your Display Settings will contain 4 sections - Displays, Icon Settings, Word Settings, and Background Settings.  When modifying Math Presets, there will be an additional General category containing options that pertain only to displaying Math equations.

Displays :

Situated at the top of the Display Settings window, the three small boxes represent the order in which the selected displays will be shown for each number.

   •  Click on the green numbers to turn Displays on or off, or use the drop-down menus to select between three modes for each display - Icon, Numeral or Word.     •  Under each Display there is a second drop-down box; this allows you to choose a Sound set to use for the audio pronunciation that plays alongside the Display.

General :

If you are modifying the Display Settings for a Math Preset, there will be an additional section with two math-specific options.

   •  Display numerals instead of icons after "x" or "÷" - This option can be used to display equations such as "three aeroplanes" x 3 = "nine aeroplanes" to avoid conceptual problems (e.g. you cannot multiply a car by a car).
   •  Do not display math symbols if showing icons - Choosing this option will allow Little Math to show equations without symbols, catering for users who follow methods that suggest only showing dot flash cards.

Icon Settings :

The Icon Settings area allows you to tweak a wide range of options for the images (known as "Icons" in Little Math) that are used to represent quantities.  Most of these options are accessed via drop-down menus, and include:

   •  Icon Set - Select from a list of available Icon Sets, choose to use a random Icon Set per slide, or choose to use a random Icon Set per presentation.
   •  Icon Item - Select from a list of available Icons that are within the selected Icon Set.  You may also choose from Random (each slide), Random (each playback), and All (Mixed), which will use various Icons all on the same slide.
   •  Size - Choose from Variable (which automatically adjusts the Icon size), Small, Medium, Large, Mixed.
   •  Shape Color - When opting to use the 'Basic Shapes' Icon Set, you can even choose to specify Colors for your Icons.
   •  Icon Placement - To ensure your child isn't simply memorising patterns, you can choose Random Icon Placement, or choose to display Icons in a grid formation depending on your preference.
   •  Column Count - When Grid Placement is selected, this additional modifier allows you to specify how many columns are in the grid, between 2 to 10.

Word Settings :

All textual elements (Word and Numeral displays) are controlled in the Word Settings area.

   •  Word Set - Word Sets allow you to change the language that your Word Displays will show.
   •  Font - Allows you to choose a font for your written displays.
   •  Font Size - Allows you to specify how large the fonts are.
   •  Color - Allows you to specify a color for your written displays.

Background Settings :

The Background color settings can be located just below the Word Settings.

   •  Color - Choose a background color for your presentation, or choose to have random backgrounds for every slide.

Once you are happy with your changes, click SAVE to save these changes to your current Preset, or click SAVE AS to save the changes to a new Preset.

The Play Panel

Little Math also has a range of global Playback options that you can modify from the Play Panel at the bottom of your Playback screen.

Lock Mouse/Keyboard

The Lock buttons for your mouse and keyboard are helpful if your child likes to play with the keyboard and mouse during presentations.  When both are locked, only the ESCAPE key on your keyboard will work, which will allow you to stop presentations.

Note: You must have Auto Forward enabled to lock both the keyboard and mouse, otherwise there would be no way to advance through the presentation! smile

Auto Forward

The Auto Forward setting allows you to play back presentations continuously without needing to click or press the spacebar to proceed to the next slide.  You can also control the speed of the continuous playback by adjusting Auto Forward settings by clicking the cog button next to the auto forward button.

   •  Auto Forward Delay - Dictates how much of a delay should be placed at the end of a slide before the next slide appears.
   •  Delay Between Equations - This extra feature allows a further delay after whole equations to help differentiate between equations.

Volume

The Volume settings allow you to adjust how loud audio pronunciations are during playback.

Subtitles

The Subtitle settings allow you to display small windows at the bottom of your presentation to tell you what number is shown on the screen, as well as what number is about to be presented.  This feature is useful when larger numbers of dots are taught, or when randomising numbers.

   •  Current - This option shows a Subtitle for the current slide.
   •  Next - This option shows a Subtitle for the upcoming slide.
   •  Subtitle text font size - This option adjusts the size of Subtitles.

At any time during your customization you can press play to try out your new settings.

And that wraps up today's FAQ on how to customize playback!  We hope you will experiment with Little Math's flexible playback options and find something that your baby will enjoy.

Until next time, happy teaching!

Shuki

Hi divaseven,

May we kindly ask how long you waited when you attempted to upload the files?  The server may have timed out due the files being really large, combined with a slow uploading speed.

Perhaps you can try compressing the audio to make the files smaller to resolve the issue as well.

Cheers,
shuki

Hi norcalmommy,

I did a little bit of tinkering with LR this morning and just want to clarify -

Is it possible you imported a .cat file, so that when you went to the PLAYBACK screen you were viewing Categories rather than Playlists?  The Save and Save As buttons only appear when viewing Playlists (as only Playlists are able to invoke customised playback settings).

However, even when doing so, I clicked on the HOME icon and then clicked back to the PLAYBACK screen and I remained under the Category list (thus the SAVE/SAVE AS buttons still had not returned), so I'm wondering whether this is the same thing you're experiencing.

Rest assured we'll get to the bottom of this though!  laugh

Cheers,

Shuki

Hi MIP1999,

Thanks for the suggestion!  We'll look into revamping this feature for future versions, but as a temporary fix for now, you can create a full-screen-sized blank image, then copy/paste your desired image into it.  This way you can ensure the picture will be whatever size you want to display! smile

Cheers,
shuki

As for the "Save"/"Save as Default" bug, I'm unable to reproduce anything abnormal on my PC, but I'm also unsure what you meant when you said the buttons were no longer available.  Did you mean the buttons were greyed out, or that they had disappeared altogether?  Could we kindly ask you to list out step-by-step how you are encountering the bug?

Thanks in advance smile

Hi jemjem,

The pointer is moved by moving your mouse, we've designed it in this way so that you can control the speed of the pointer moving across the screen (in case you are displaying audio files that may be pronounced faster or slower).

147  BrillKids Software / HOW TOs and FAQs / How to Create New Sound Sets on: March 13, 2009, 02:28:32 AM
How to Create New Sound Sets

Sound sets allow you to play audio pronunciations for the numbers you present in Little Math.  This can be used in many ways, such as rapid flashing of random numbers, or to teach a foreign language (or so you don't lose your voice having to say the numbers all the time!  laugh ) Today's guide will teach you how to create new Sound sets quickly and easily!

Quote
To create a new Sound set you will need:

    -  Audio files (Little Math is compatible with .MP3, .WAV and .WMA file extensions) of individual pronunciations from zero to one hundred.  If you do not have these, you can record them using a microphone and a sound recording software.

Tip: For users of Little Reader, you may use BrillKids Easy Voice Recorder to record your pronunciations for Little Math!  When recording, don't forget to name your files carefully so the numbers don't get mixed up.

Assuming you have pronunciation files ready to plug into your Little Math, let's get started.  First navigate to the NUMBER LIBRARY of Little Math by clicking on the NUMBER LIBRARY button at the top of the application.  From this screen:

    - Select the Sounds tab from the Number Library screen.

    - Click on the NEW button located in the bottom-left of the Sounds tab.  Alternatively, you may right-click in the Sound set list and select "New Sound Set" from the context menu that appears.

    - A new Sound set will be created below the Sound set you have currently selected, with its name highlighted.

    - Type in the desired name for your new Sound set (e.g. "Spanish (woman)"), and press ENTER on your keyboard to confirm.

    - To begin attaching audio files to your new Sound set, follow the steps below:

        1) Double-click in the blank space to the right of "0" in your list of numbers.
        2) A window will pop up allowing you to navigate and select the file you want to attach.
        3) Once you have selected a file to attach, click on "Open" to confirm.
        4) You may preview the file you have selected for the number by either clicking on the green play icon on the right, or by clicking the "PLAY SELECTED FILE" button at the bottom of your list of numbers.
        5) Repeat steps 1 to 4 to continue customizing your Sound set.

To save you even more time, you may also check our Forum Downloads area to see if the language you want has already been created.  Additional Sound sets may be downloaded and imported straight into your Number Library.

That concludes today's guide, we hope you will enjoy teaching your little one with Little Math!

How to Create New Word Sets

Word sets can be used in a variety of ways with Little Math, but most commonly to teach the names of numbers from 0 to 100 in foreign languages.  Today's guide will teach you how to create new Word Sets quickly and easily!

To create a new Word set you will need to be in the NUMBER LIBRARY screen of Little Math, which you may navigate to by clicking on the NUMBER LIBRARY button at the top of your Little Math.  From this screen:

    - First select the Words tab from the Number Library screen.

    - Click on the NEW button located in the bottom-left of the Words tab.  Alternatively, you may right-click in the Word set list and select "New Word Set" from the context menu that appears.

    - A new Word set will be created below the Word set you have currently selected, with its name highlighted.

    - Type in the desired name for your new Word set, and press ENTER on your keyboard to confirm.

    - To begin filling in your Word set, follow the steps below:

        1) Select the number zero from the list of numbers in the right panel.
        2) Press ENTER on your keyboard to edit the selected word, or click the edit button below.
        3) Type in the word you would like Little Math to display when teaching the written form of "0".
        4) Press ENTER on your keyboard to confirm.
        5) Press the Down arrow on your keyboard 3 times to move to the next number.  (We do apologise, this is a known bug that we are fixing for future versions of Little Math!  laugh )
        6) Repeat steps 2 to 5 to continue customizing your Word set.

To save you even more time, you may also check our Forum Downloads area to see if the language you want has already been created.  Additional Word sets may be downloaded and imported straight into your Number Library.

That concludes today's guide, we hope you will enjoy teaching your little one with Little Math!
