Dear Joan,
Thank you for your comment. My child is 19 months old and we are Singaporean Chinese. I agree with you that it might be difficult to explain the meaning at this stage to a younger kid. So why do I bother to flash these Chinese characters to my kid is because I want to fully utilising his photographic memory now by expecting him to remember all these difficult Chinese characters at this young stage. He might not even want to look at them when he is much older. As Chinese Mandarin is our second language (for Singaporean Chinese), I see the importance of exposing him to more difficult Chinese character now than later. I personally think every Chinese character being flashed to him at this stage, he will capture it like a camera and remember its pronunication.
Result:
When I printed out sets of these 4-characters and asked him which is which of two options, he could recognise them by pointing. (I do not expect him to pronouce them now). Which means he can recognise eight verbs already with the following example:
Explanation can come later when he is older.
For example, the meaning for 海咸河淡 鳞潜羽翔:
海水咸,河水淡;鱼儿在水中潜游,鸟儿在空中飞翔
海咸 means the sea water is salty
河淡 means the river water is bland
鳞潜 means the fish are diving and swiming in the water
羽翔 means the birds are flying circular in the sky
Every Chinese character has a meaning and can be formed in other phrases, for example:
海 means sea
咸 means salty
河 means river
淡 means bland
鳞 means scales (also representing fish)
潜 means diving
羽 means feather (also representing birds)
翔 means flying
I am not very good and professional with my Chinese language, hence I want my next generation to be able to communicate and associate with the billions people in China.
I totally agree with you Chinese poems are easier and beautiful and I like them too and want my children to learn them. Anything that is easier should be incorporate later as it is easier to learn. If possible, I want my kids to learn Tamil, Greek, French, etc. which I know zero of it. ha ha ha....
You might not agree with me but I believe any form of good teaching, may it be easy or tough, it is good to start early with love and not by force. Every individual has his/her style and method. Cheers!
