16  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: How to introduce other languages on: January 17, 2011, 05:23:46 PM
Tracy,
My baby learned how to read in Polish from books. But if you don't speak that language you can try Rosetta Stone. I see your kids are a little bit older and that program should be suitable for them. And, you can learn all along with them. I have Spanish version and plan to do that with my 24 months old baby.

17  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Homemade EK = REALLY hard work!! on: January 17, 2011, 05:06:29 PM
Sarah,
It's true that it takes a lot of time to prepare  EK cards. Sometimes it's better to present just a few at one time and enjoy them with your baby then overwhelm yourself and being discouraged by preparing so many. Also, like you said you learn a lot about new stuff when you prepare EK. It's easier and more fun to present these facts once you prepared them by yourself. I'm speaking from my experience!

I found http://www.wikipedia.org/ very helpful. Many times I just copy and paste all of the info.
I hope you find balance between your personal time and preparing EK cards.

mother of faith,
Thank you for your replay. I have power point.

How you create templates in power points though? If I understand correctly what template means ;-)

I would love to participate. I have some ideas but I don't know how to prepare them. Is there any tutorial available somewhere?

I would like to get answer to questions like: How to create templates for a theme? How to paste real pictures and some words into the template?

I have a lot of ideas for subject but my technical side is not so good.

Please help!

20  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: muddling up letters teaching ideas? on: November 16, 2010, 06:48:13 AM

Charzeliumn,
Please continue teaching your baby whole words. Your baby will pick up eventually.
I have a small suggestion: you can create mini books with "b" "p" and "d" sounds at the beginning of words. You can introduce one book at a time. Babies learn whole words much easier than the alphabet at this time of age. They need to see the reason behind alphabet letters and through words and easy books they see that letters are to form words and sentences that have a meaning: communication

I created post about these books on my blog and I provided links you need. You can print out words for free.

Here is the link:

21  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: How to start/ and when a third language? on: November 01, 2010, 09:08:17 PM
Stodd,

All posts have great advices. Start introducing another language whenever you are ready.

My baby (22 months) knows English, Polish, Spanish and about month ago I introduced Chinese. I don't speak Spanish or Chinese. He knows Spanish only from DVD's ,Dora cd's and some flashcards I know how to say. He reads  Spanish flashcards so I know watching dvd's systematicly works for a baby.

He loves to watch Chinese Little Pim and Wink to Learn.

Do your own research about dvd's of the language you want to introduce and go for it. Don't wait. Babies can absorb few languages at one time. It's proved by  researches.

22  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: Laminating Machine on: October 29, 2010, 08:48:49 PM
I also have Scotch TL 901 I bought for $30 a year ago. Great stuff, although you need to know that pouches are not so cheep, about $15-$16 for 50 pouches. For someone who is laminating a LOT that can be an investment.  I live in Hawaii so price can be a little bit different than on a main land or different country.

Laminating machine works GREAT! No problem so far ;-)

mom2cross,
Maybe amazon website: look inside the book will help to make a decision about buying that book http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Kitchen+Table+Math+Book+&x=0&y=0

It looks very interesting

LocaHijabi

I totally agree with Waterdreamer.
I've created many books on Power Point from BrillKids as an addition to the Power Point presentations. Eaton loved that idea. He started to read from these books. So I would suggest to create books instead of playing with as a cards.

Have a great day!

25  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: STUCK Please help!! on: October 11, 2010, 10:31:53 PM
LocaHijabi,

I've introduced 3 languages and math to my baby. English, Polish and Math (LR) when Eaton was 4 months old. Spanish language(LL and educational videos) was introduced about 5-6 months.

My scheduled looked like this:

Every day English, Polish and Math -mostly twice a day in the morning before breakfast( my son was awake at about 4 or 5 am.
Spanish-twice a week Tuesday and Thursday. I was creating Spanish Day. I was showing him educational videos and cd's with Spanish stories

Eaton is 21 months old now. He reads and speaks in English(primary language) and Polish (secondary). About a month ago he started to read in Spanish. It took him more time to read in Spanish as no one in the household speak that language.

Math: He knows numbers 1-100, but it's hard for me to  assess his level of addition. He inclined more towards words and languages than math so I didn't push him.

I didn't do sessions 3 times a day, because my baby wanted to read books all the time. So your baby can achieve success with only 2 sessions a day if you don't have a time.
But I would suggest to introduce 2nd language ASAP.

swathi_akshaya
sorry for that late response but I didn't get any confirmations about new posts.

I hope you figure it out how to print from myfreeflashcards.com. If not: at the end of each flashcard session there is an option to  print. Some early ones that were created long time ago don't have that options though.

Bella,

I hope my baby will click one of these days and starts to pee and poop in the potty instead of next to it ;-)

I'm glad you enjoyed Eaton's video
have a GREAT DAY !!!

28  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: When is the right time to introduce couplets and sentences on: August 16, 2010, 09:28:55 PM
Arvi,

Glenn Doman in his book " How to teach your baby to read" states that once a child has acquired a basic reading vocabulary of single words he is now ready to put those words together to make couplets. He doesn't really specify how many words baby needs to know. Although he describes areas of words you should present first to a baby:
Objects, Possessions, Foods, Animals, Actions. In each area he gave an  example of 12 single words that gives total of 60 words.

So when you want to present couplets example: orange juice, baby should know these words already. If you presented  enough single words to create couplets go ahead and don't wait. Introduce colors and create new couplets.

Baby will be happy seeing old words he already knows that can create a new idea. Beside that you still will be introducing new words by reading books to a baby.

There is no wrong way for teaching baby how to read until you do this without enthusiasm and joy!

I wrote a first post on my blog about my way of teaching reading  http://earlylearning-eaton.blogspot.com/. It's not perfect Doman method though, but you can find some ideas about books you can create for your baby in near future.

If you want to do this perfectly as Doman says, it's always good to go back and re-read "How to teach your baby to read".

I hope that helped a little bit.

Enjoy your teaching!! The result will be astonishing :-)
29  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Knows about 100 sight words, when to expect sounding out words? Early phonics? on: August 14, 2010, 08:48:46 PM
LilyAndOwensMom,

With my baby Eaton I was using Montessori House DVD's  http://www.mymontessorihouse.com/DVD.html

here is a youtube sample
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/MiNZiHXwWEE&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/MiNZiHXwWEE&rel=1</a>

I own "Sounds words", "Make Big words" and " Big vocabulary". I was showing them to Eaton since he was 12 months old. Highly recommended for simple version of dvd's. No background distraction.
My baby is reading phoneticly now at 19 months

By the way this is great post!
