16  Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Re: Essential Reading for EL parents- please help me out! on: June 02, 2013, 01:40:17 AM
Wonderful news.

For an EC book I preferred Ingrid Bauer. http://www.amazon.com/Diaper-Free-Gentle-Natural-Hygiene/dp/0452287774.
It contained a little more research and I appreciated her ideas on EC as a way to respect your baby's needs, not just as a potty training method.

I liked a Thomas Verny book about the pre parenting, weekly steps for pregnancy. It had lots of ideas for interacting with your unborn featus. http://www.amazon.com/Nurturing-Unborn-Child-Thomas-Verny/dp/1587541041/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1370137091&sr=1-3&keywords=thomas+verny

Of course, all things Doman.

Crying.
18  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: LR and Doman on: April 26, 2013, 10:06:53 PM
If you have time, I would do both LR and physical flash cards. The more opportunities your baby has, the more likely they will understand. Keeping baby interested is important and keeping them guessing on what activity comes next will keep them interested.

I use LR, YBCR, 2 types of flashcards, PowerPoint, games, iPad apps, star fall, and a few other activities. But my son has still lost interest. Currently on here searching for new ideas.

You baby is lucky to have you as a parent!

I live in SK but visit Calgary every few months, does that count?
20  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Why do wish for another baby? on: April 22, 2013, 06:26:41 PM
Kimba15, I admit I am struggling with this. My partners position is very reasonable. He has many good points on why our family is complete. It is very rational to stop at 2 kids. I don't wish to rip our current family apart over my need to have more kids. There is just no right answer to this problem. How did/or are you reconciling this? Have you found any good on-line sites to help you? I really need to deal with this, right now every time I look at my partner, I just see the man who won't give me what I want! I know that isn't fair - but it is how I feel. Any advice?
21  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Fav apps on: April 22, 2013, 06:17:18 AM
Is there a thread started that lists favourite free apps? If so, Will someone please link, thx. If not, what are your favourite apps right now?

Endless alphabet seems to be my ds right now.
22  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Why do wish for another baby? on: April 22, 2013, 06:09:51 AM
My partner and I have 2 kids. I wish for more. He is happy with 2. We have both discussed our positions. Both are reasonable. Neither one of us is right, or wrong.

My wish for another child is not rational (who signs up for years of no sleep, toilet training, etc). I still want another baby. I admit one the reasons is to get another chance to do EL. To try again to teach my child from birth, to experiment with different learning methods, and to try math again (it didn't work with the first 2).

Of course I also want another child for all those motherly reasons - I have love to give, I wish for my children to have more siblings, I wish for that large family, that new baby smell, etc.

What are your reasons for wanting another child?
23  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Finding time to cook healthy meals/snacks on: March 28, 2013, 01:04:46 AM
I struggle to cook from scratch while finding the time to teach my kids. I just can't seem to fit being a Doman Mom with being the Mom that cooks all food from scratch. On days on do both, I lose my sanity. So, to keep my sanity I have cut myself some slack.

On days  I cook from scratch, such as baking bread, making soup stocks, fermenting food, etc. I do try to make one fresh meal and one frozen meal. I also have my kids help. Even the 2 year old can stir or mix or locate utensils. I have cook days about 3 days a week. On these days, I do no Doman activities. None. If I try, it isn't joyful or happy. So, I figure my kids cooking and learning about nutrition is good enough.

On teaching days, I do not really cook. I use the frozen food and other items I have prepped on cooking days. If we have none left, I reach for a box of something or the telephone (pizza). How often does tht happen? I usually have one easy preboxed less than healthy something every month in anticipation of needing it.  I order pizza every few months. We rarely verging on never eat out.

Is this ideal - not really, but it seems the best I can manage. A year ago I was trying to do it all, but often found myself miserable and frustrated. I would love to have it all every day, but my reality is I can't. At best I can have 2 out of 3. My choices are Doman, cook, and my sanity. I like my sanity and I alternate between food and teaching.

Lowering my standards and allowing myself an easy day every once in while means I have the energy to cook from scratch the rest of the time.
24  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Why does little reader on the iPad contain much less than on the main computer?? on: March 17, 2013, 07:39:42 PM
I just quickly with to defend Brillkids. It should be noted that the comment of ' Yes I also don't see the big deal. It is a $20 app" was not made by a member of the Brillkids team.

Perhaps Brillkids could do a better job of distinguishing all the differences between their available products. I do not believe they are intentionally misleading anyone. As Brillkids is constantly trying to make their product better, easier, and more accessible, it is likely difficult to explain every single change at any single moment in time. Brillkids has made a fantastic product and to me has been nothing but a wonderful, upfront, respectable company.
25  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Doman's Teach your child to swim... on: February 13, 2013, 03:16:35 AM
Araboo, Did your baby feel well enough today to swim? I like your enthusiasm, and was hoping for an update.

I have never heard of water babies before, do you have a link? Thx.
26  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: How did you teach your child to speak a foreign language? on: February 08, 2013, 06:19:15 PM
Games in the second language are a good idea. We don't watch t.v , but I let my kids watch kids movies in Spanish.

Another idea I tried for awhile was finding a time/ activity during the day and making it the second language activity. I did this with snack time, the snack of the day was when we practiced Spanish. It helped me remember to teach it, and it helped my kid to know. I have also seen the suggestion of language days, Monday is native, Tuesday is non-native, etc. I have never tried this because I can't make it through 15 minutes without using English, but it seems like a good idea for someone that knows 2 languages well.

I agree, worry less about your accent or imperfect language skills. Talk with them in English. Learning from DVDs and interent is much slower. However, i do like hearning the flow/accent in movies and the Internet, it helps me with pronunciation.

Keep trying and good luck.
27  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: No progress with dots cards...Please help on: February 08, 2013, 06:02:07 PM
That sounds frustrating.im not sure I would give up on the math dots, but maybe I would start to add other variety. I believe that is more to teaching math than just dots. So maybe alternate dots with numerals. Or do math dots one day, and a different math activity the next day, then back to math dots. If it was me I would not redo the dots systematically, but I might try reshowing them randomly in groups of 5.
It sounds like you are already trying to make the dots exciting, I like the idea of hiding then. Keep it up, no learning is a waste of time.
28  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: How did you teach your child to speak a foreign language? on: February 06, 2013, 11:25:26 PM
I am 'trying' to teach my kids Spanish - and I do not know the language. It has been a struggle. In my community I have no access to any Spanish speakers - native or non-native. So, it is just me. And this is what I have been doing:

Little Reader
Doman Dictionary DVD's
Little Pim DVD and Ipad App
Little Pim Flashcards
Internet stuff I can find for free (onlinefreespanish) (youtube)
Listening to Spanish DVDs.
A few basic Spanish Books (Baby Board Books and Level 1 readers that I have in both English and Spanish, so I can figure them out)
I want Rosetta Stone, but the $$ has put this on the back burner for awhile.

Consistency is key, as TMT, mentioned. Especially with no access to a native Spanish Speaker, if we take a few week break, we forget lots. So, I try even just to say one word in Spanish every day, seems small, but it is better than nothing.

We are not learning very quickly, but slowly we are learning. I am not keeping one step ahead of my kids, that was just too difficult for me, but learning at the same time works for us. We focus on basic concepts, nouns, common verbs, and less on conversation. I find we do lots of speaking in English but changing one or two word to Spanish. It isn't ideal, but again, better than giving up or forgetting altogether.

Good Luck to you. It is a worthy idea to teach a second or third language, and speaking it at least some yourself is a huge bonus.
29  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Nursery wall art ideas pls. on: February 04, 2013, 05:12:47 PM
If you wish to be hardcore Doman, what about basic black and white squares on a wall(s). You can add in outline picture as baby grows. 2 packs of paper and inexpensive.

Weegalary.com sells some black and white art cards that are pretty cool.

Or, just use the infant stimulation cards from brill kids.

You could then add any colour you wanted, maybe a pink or blue lampshade depending on th gender.
30  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Doman's Teach your child to swim... on: February 04, 2013, 04:58:00 PM
I read the book and imperfectly tried with my son from about 3 days old to 6 months. He would hold his breath. However, I found the www.uswim.com website to have easier to understand and implement instructions. At age 2 he will hold his breath for about 3-5 seconds, but can't really swim, but he can back float.

I also used the Doman book with my daughter starting at about age 1 and again imperfect implementation until age two. She would not hold her breath. At age 3 I discovered the uswim. And by age 4 she had completed level 2 and was into the second skill on level 3. I put her into a conventional RedCross swimming lesson this summer and she passed level 2 (designed for 6-8 year olds) at age 4.

The Doman book has general knowledge but I find it lacks on details of how to implement. If you can get the book for free, then I would read it, if I had to buy the book, I would save my money and use the free resources on the Internet.

Pokerdads's blog has some great suggestions on swimming. And an excellent post on helping the parent get over th fear of your baby being underwater.

Happy swimming.
