16  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Teach Kids Subtraction Techniques on: July 09, 2019, 02:26:50 AM
Subtraction is the process of finding how many are left when some are taken away. It is the difference between two numbers.

Tips 1:  If the numbers are too high or too difficult to subtract, write them down in columns. Separate the numbers into ones, tens, hundreds and thousands. List the numbers in a column and always start with the ones first.

Tips 2: Introduce story problems and vocabulary.
  • Eat goldfish crackers or candy to really motivate kids.
  • Use different manipulatives such as teddy bears to act out bears going away.

19  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Telling the time on: June 13, 2019, 08:23:35 AM
Telling the time is an important skill in everyday life, but it can be tricky to learn.  Before your child will be able to tell the time on a clock they will need to grasp how time relates to their own experiences. Start with the general concept of time – morning, afternoon, evening. Draw your kids attention to time. Mention the time at different points in the day. "It’s 7 o’clock: time for dinner." Put a clock in your child’s bedroom. This will help your kids to understand time because of constantly moving hands.

20  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Festival Joy: Teach your kids about Hari Raya festival on: June 07, 2019, 08:23:33 AM
The festival of Eid, known in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia as Hari Raya Puasa. It falls on the first day of Syawal, the 10th month of the Hijrah (Islamic) calendar. It is a celebratory occasion following a month of fasting, which is known as Ramadan. The term hari raya is Malay for “big (or grand) day of rejoicing” .

During the morning of Hari Raya, would visit the mosque and recite special prayers. Other practices observed include asking forgiveness from elders and visiting relatives and friends. Understanding the tradition: https://learning.covoji.com/english/hari-raya-celebration/

It is important for kids to know the festivals celebrated in different country. Tell them the story behind festival and encourage them to read about it. Make things related to a festival together as a family, for example set up Christmas tree during Christmas time, make rangoli during Diwali, make ketupat (packed rice wrap inside diamond shape coconut leaf) during Hari Raya.

It appears so much larger and brighter than the other stars because we are so close to it. The Sun is the center of our Solar System and contains most of the mass in the Solar System. 26  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / How to teach your child to determine even and odd numbers? on: April 18, 2019, 10:38:48 AM
Teaching children odd and even numbers can be tricky, but it needn't be. Here is three simple ways to help your kids learn even and odd numbers.
First, introduce your kids to the concept of even and odd numbers. Tell kids that odd numbers are lonely, and even numbers have a friend. Even numbers can be paired up exactly. Odd numbers can't. Details concept on https://learning.covoji.com/math-zone/is-it-odd-or-even/

Second, let your child practice and identify what is even and odd numbers. Egg Even Odd teach kids to differentiate even and odd numbers.
IOS: https://itunes.apple.com/my/app/egg-even-odd/id1445411214
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.covoji.eggevenodd

Third, use chart. Below chart introduce all the even and odd numbers from one to hundred. Blue colour highlighted number is odd, purple colour highlighted number is even. You can print out the chart and stick on your child reading space so they can familiar with the numbers.

27  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Counting with toddlers -- early learning math on: April 13, 2019, 10:36:38 AM
Numbers and counting are a crucial part of your child's growing mathematical understanding. Counting is learned when toddlers:
  • Start to recognize how many objects are in a small set without counting.
  • Knowing the "number words" from one to ten and their order.
  • Know the sequence regardless of which number they start on. So if you say "start counting at four" they will count "four, five . ."
  • Able to count visible objects. If your child counts six oranges 1,2,3,4,5,6 and then you ask "how many oranges are there"? and they know the answer.

At home, you can continue to look for simple opportunities to extend their understanding of numbers and counting in everyday activities. Here is some number activity to help kids practice counting:
1. Teach your kids to count marshmallows while making a cup of hot chocolate. More on https://learning.covoji.com/math-zone/hot-cocoa-with-marshmallows-math/
2. Give them a list of various things around your home – windows, tables, chairs, etc. Check on https://learning.covoji.com/math-zone/count-around-your-house/
3. Count the circles of caterpillar, https://learning.covoji.com/math-zone/caterpillar-math/

Atmosphere; Climate; Earth; Moon; Solar System; Solar Eclipse; Orbit
30  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Pattern and Kids on: March 25, 2019, 07:47:28 AM
Children have a natural tendency to find patterns; as they reinforce feelings of safety and predictability. Patterns help children learn sequencing and to make predictions, which leads to stronger mathematical skills. Times tables, addition and skip counting all require an understanding in patterning.

How to begin with pattern teaching for kids?

It’s important to point out to your child that what makes a pattern a pattern. Pattern is the sequence repeats in the same order.  For example, “apple, banana, apple, banana, apple” is a basic ABA pattern. “Apple, apple, banana, apple, apple, banana” is a basic AAB pattern.  Here is some simple idea to teach your kids patterns.

  • While folding the laundry, ask your child to help by matching socks by their size and colour, and then putting them into pairs.
  • Make a sound pattern with rhythm instruments. BANG, tap, tap, BANG, tap, tap.
  • Make patterns using snack food.  Pretzel, cracker, raisin, raisin.  Pretzel, cracker, raisin, raisin, pretzel.

Can you guess the pattern for below?
