EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Teach Kids Subtraction Techniques
|
on: July 09, 2019, 02:26:50 AM
|
Subtraction is the process of finding how many are left when some are taken away. It is the difference between two numbers. Tips 1: If the numbers are too high or too difficult to subtract, write them down in columns. Separate the numbers into ones, tens, hundreds and thousands. List the numbers in a column and always start with the ones first. Tips 2: Introduce story problems and vocabulary. - Eat goldfish crackers or candy to really motivate kids.
- Use different manipulatives such as teddy bears to act out bears going away.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Telling the time
|
on: June 13, 2019, 08:23:35 AM
|
Telling the time is an important skill in everyday life, but it can be tricky to learn. Before your child will be able to tell the time on a clock they will need to grasp how time relates to their own experiences. Start with the general concept of time – morning, afternoon, evening. Draw your kids attention to time. Mention the time at different points in the day. "It’s 7 o’clock: time for dinner." Put a clock in your child’s bedroom. This will help your kids to understand time because of constantly moving hands. Learn time vocabulary and concept : https://learning.covoji.com/math-zone/telling-the-time/

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Festival Joy: Teach your kids about Hari Raya festival
|
on: June 07, 2019, 08:23:33 AM
|
The festival of Eid, known in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia as Hari Raya Puasa. It falls on the first day of Syawal, the 10th month of the Hijrah (Islamic) calendar. It is a celebratory occasion following a month of fasting, which is known as Ramadan. The term hari raya is Malay for “big (or grand) day of rejoicing” . During the morning of Hari Raya, would visit the mosque and recite special prayers. Other practices observed include asking forgiveness from elders and visiting relatives and friends. Understanding the tradition: https://learning.covoji.com/english/hari-raya-celebration/It is important for kids to know the festivals celebrated in different country. Tell them the story behind festival and encourage them to read about it. Make things related to a festival together as a family, for example set up Christmas tree during Christmas time, make rangoli during Diwali, make ketupat (packed rice wrap inside diamond shape coconut leaf) during Hari Raya.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Counting with toddlers -- early learning math
|

Numbers and counting are a crucial part of your child's growing mathematical understanding. Counting is learned when toddlers: - Start to recognize how many objects are in a small set without counting.
- Knowing the "number words" from one to ten and their order.
- Know the sequence regardless of which number they start on. So if you say "start counting at four" they will count "four, five . ."
- Able to count visible objects. If your child counts six oranges 1,2,3,4,5,6 and then you ask "how many oranges are there"? and they know the answer.
At home, you can continue to look for simple opportunities to extend their understanding of numbers and counting in everyday activities. Here is some number activity to help kids practice counting: 1. Teach your kids to count marshmallows while making a cup of hot chocolate. Give them a list of various things around your home – windows, tables, chairs, etc. Check on https://learning.covoji.com/math-zone/count-around-your-house/3. The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite, it means that the moon orbits around the Earth naturally compared to man-made satellites. The Moon has no life on it because it has no atmosphere. The moon orbits around the Earth in just over 27 days, and within that time there are different phases of the moon. The Moon’s orbit around the Earth inspired the human calendar month. How far is the Moon from Earth? Check out the answer: https://learning.covoji.com/curious-world/the-moon/KEY VOCABULARY - MOONAtmosphere; Climate; Earth; Moon; Solar System; Solar Eclipse; Orbit

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Pattern and Kids
|
on: March 25, 2019, 07:47:28 AM
|
Children have a natural tendency to find patterns; as they reinforce feelings of safety and predictability. Patterns help children learn sequencing and to make predictions, which leads to stronger mathematical skills. Times tables, addition and skip counting all require an understanding in patterning. How to begin with pattern teaching for kids? It’s important to point out to your child that what makes a pattern a pattern. Pattern is the sequence repeats in the same order. For example, “apple, banana, apple, banana, apple” is a basic ABA pattern. “Apple, apple, banana, apple, apple, banana” is a basic AAB pattern. Here is some simple idea to teach your kids patterns. - While folding the laundry, ask your child to help by matching socks by their size and colour, and then putting them into pairs.
- Make a sound pattern with rhythm instruments. BANG, tap, tap, BANG, tap, tap.
- Make patterns using snack food. Pretzel, cracker, raisin, raisin. Pretzel, cracker, raisin, raisin, pretzel.
Can you guess the pattern for below?
