Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: How to train baby for toilet or potty

Every child is going to respond differently. My opinion is that the longer you wait before introducing your child to the potty the more "foreign" it will be to the child and the more resistance you may encounter. I started putting my daughter on the potty when she was 3 months old, not all the time, just when it seemed most likely that she needed to go, and with no pressure to not go in her diaper. At 16 months I put her in training pants instead of diapers. She had good bowel control and only pooped in the potty, but it did take us a few days in pants for her to learn to control her bladder and let me know in time to get her to the potty. She is 18 months now and still has a few times she doesn't quite make it to the potty and her training pants will be a little wet, but she will get most of it into the potty. She is clearly uncomfortable when she pees in her pants. My daughter doesn't like to be messy - if her hands are dirty she will insist on them getting cleaned as soon as she notices the dirt. I think that trait has helped her learn to control her bladder because she doesn't like that wet feeling. Also, my next baby is due any day now, so was on a mission to get my first one out of diapers before I have a second one in diapers. I may have given her a few more months if I wasn't under that timeline. I'm sure there are children who don't mind feeling wet and if that is the case my approach may not work. Also, I think it makes a difference how well your child can communicate. It is much easier if your child can communicate well enough to be clear about needing to use the potty. With my next child I am also going to start putting her on the potty as soon she can sit up, just to get used to what she is supposed to do on it. I'm also going to try to put the little one of the potty when her big sister sits on the potty - give her that positive example. All the best!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Anyone else doing Doman with a newborn?
|
on: March 24, 2010, 11:45:05 PM

"How Smart Is Your Baby" is a book written by Glenn Doman that outlines a program for newborns that covers physical, motor, vision, hearing, tactile, etc. brain development. I followed it, in my own adapted way, with my daughter when she was a newborn. I found that the number of times that various activities were recommended was not feasible for me since sleeping and feeding took most of the time.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: what happens after preschool...??!!

I learnt to read when I was 2 and was very bored when I started school and I don't want my daughters to be in the same situation. The public schools in my area are considered to be good, but they do focus their resources on the kids that are struggling. My choices are to either home school, or go back to working full time so that I can afford a private school. There are so many variables, I really don't know which option we will choose when we get there.

Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: Babyplus

I am pregnant now and really wanted to use it, but when I read about the possibility of it damaging my baby's hearing I decided not to use it. For me it was just too high a risk. I did make a CD of my husband and I reading some books that I play to my unborn baby, but the volume is much lower than Babyplus. When I first came across Babyplus I was so excited because there are so many people who have had good results, but it seems like it might make a difference to baby's hearing how your baby is positioned in the womb, and without being able to tell that I could not risk damaging her hearing. I was quite dissapointed to not feel safe using it.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Different ways of teaching baby languages

I think it is very helpful to have contact with someone who is fluent in the language you are teaching. Maybe try to find a play group that speaks the language. I am teaching my daughter Spanish and I don't speak it. We started with DVDs and LR, then we joined a Spanish music class and she learnt some songs and we have CDs of the songs that we listen to. I could not afford to continue with the Spanish class, so now we go to the Spanish grocery store and she can hear Spanish and interact with Spanish speakers. I am trying to also reinforce what she has learnt with my limited Spanish knowledge.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Potty training - we've spent the whole morning in the bathroom!
|
on: February 18, 2010, 12:38:26 AM
|
|
I have spent my fair share of mornings in the bathroom with frequent trips up the stairs to try to make it to the potty in time. Since I am 7 months pregnant that quickly becomes quite uncomfortable for me. My current solution is that I put a potty in my office next to my desk. When my daughter needs to sit on the potty I put one of her DVDs on for her - she gets to sit as long as she likes while watching a DVD, and I get to sit in my comfortable chair and get a few minutes at my computer. She is 16 months and I haven't changed a messy diaper in a couple months now - so it is working! We are still working on the wet ones...

I only have the Brainy Baby Laugh & Learn DVD and my daughter enjoys it. I got it because I read another thread about Brainy Baby and that seemed to be the DVD that most people liked best. I do not have any of the flashcards or tab books so I can't comment on them. You would need to contact the company to ask about shipping to another country.

BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / Re: Can we download sound sets in the trial version?

I was wanting to do the same thing in German and Spanish, but the course curriculum is not yet developed for other languages. There are files that members have created and uploaded in other languages. Some languages have more files, or better quality, than other languages. Maybe someone from brillkids can comment on when they expect the curriculum to be available in other languages?

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Interested in Pictures of homemade BIT cards
|
on: February 11, 2010, 10:06:13 PM
|
|
I started off with the 11X11 cards, printed the pictures, researched and wrote up the facts, printed the facts, cut and glued them onto the boards, and then put contact paper on top of both sides. My daughter does touch the cards a lot. After doing many sets like that I decided that it was absolutely NOT worth the effort to have them be 11x11 size. I then switched to printing directly onto card stock in regular 8.5x11 size. That way I didn't need to do any cutting or glueing. And it worked perfectly fine! There are so many bit cards that members of this forum have uploaded - I wish I had found them before I started making my own.

Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Re: Do I need to take folic acid and omega3 supplements while on my 2nd trimester?

It is also very important to get enough calcium. If you are not taking a supplement your baby will take it from your bones and you could end up with weaker bones, teeth, etc. I take a prenatal vitamin that has the folic acid, omega 3, DHA, and everything else pregnant women need. It is much simpler for me that taking half a dozen different supplements. Also make sure that you are eating a well balanced diet with plenty of protein, and drink plenty of water.
