Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: Santa--Do you do it?

In my family from the time kids are very small, we celebrate Christmas with tons of activities so that there is no place for Santa. We make lots of ginger bread cookies and give them to our friends and neighbors. Kids help to distribute parcels with food to the poor together with their old toys.We make big birthday cake for Jesus and all of us make special presents for Him (poems, songs or resolutions ).And also we explain that Santa was a real person long time ago (Saint Nicolas)that helped people, but is used now to replace real meaning like taking Christ out of Christmas (X-mas).

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Integrating a phonics approach into Doman reading program, anyone else?

I used with my son Doman metod from the time he was very small and he honestly enjoyed it.I still do inteligence programs and new languages. He is 3 now.At about 18 months we finished YBCR and started to read home made readers with the vocabulary we covered. But he didn't like that very much, instead he developed this new love for letters and playing with words. So going along with it I started with him phonics while having fun playing with words ,blends and sounds.A friend pointed me to this great site that introduced phonics in a fun and interactive way http://www.starfall.com/.It's design for older kids but my son loved it.Now he is reading on his own very well .I guess I found phonics as a helpful stepping stone especially that I'm not native english speaker. And by no means it undermines Doman metod.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: for everyone who breastfed over a year

My little one is now 1.5 and still breastfeeds but not any more when she is hungry. She wants breast more for comfort ,when she gets hurt or when tired. When she was about 12 months I would start to replace nursing times with small healthy meals and drinks and still let her nurse when she was done. Now she understands what she wants and comes to tell me if she wants water(it's very hot were we live) or milk(cows milk) or she wants food, and when nothing else will do but "BO"-breast milk Ha!Still I always monitor her daily intake to make sure it's balanced. She eats all the meals with us .Some days she is not very hungry and sticks to liquids but other times she will eat more than her 3 year old brother.Soon she will stop nursing all together and I will probably miss it more than her.Ha.

I wanted to put parts of songs in my slide shows thats why I needed cutting tool , songs are already mp3 files .Also I was hopping for better voice recording as I'm not impressed with my efforts but maybe it's just the mic I'm using and computer picksup all the noice .I don't know much about it.It would be great to have a tool that cuts and saves only small parts of a file in LR recorder. Thanks so much for the response.

Yes, I did it works just fine. But I needed to cut different mp3 files for LittleReader .I tried to do it with Audacity and it's great but it didin't want to export the files to LR so I got the Lame and just could not get it how to make them work.Somewhere along the line I got a box to check my audio properties And thats when the sound was gone.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: The phonics debate

I think when it comes to english, teaching kids sight reading works well and in my own experience they still read well by 6, or 12. They like to read a lot and that is the key later. But with teaching other languages was a different story. When teaching them polish the same metod I found that most words had so many various forms were the root words are not so clear like in english. They had very hard time to see the conections between the words, so as soon as they showed interest I thot them polish alphabet and from there reading progressed quickly.
