EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: I need advice: What to do with advenced reader kids in school

Hi, The other day my husband and I had a conversation about our son's schooling (even though we have a few more years to go -he's not even three yet). I am positive that I don't want to home school him (don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with that), but it also came up what to do with his advanced reading. I don't want him to be bored in class. Can he just attend a higher class only for reading? Or can we choose a language class instead of reading? I have no idea about our options. I would love to read about your experience, ideas, advice. Thanks
Karma to you Stodd for such a great topic and karma to everybody who is sharing their ideas and experience. We are in a similar situation and in addition to that my DD was born end of Sept and by Florida laws the cut off is Sept 1, so she will actually go to a kindergarden when she is almost six years old!!!!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Skipping words when reading out loud to herself?

I'm with you ladies!!! Every evening the same story: please, don't skip the words. And I really hope it is because of fast reading Glad to know that we are not alone. Oh, and I do notice, that sometimes when she points with her finger she still skips the words she is reading but then she realizes that something is wrong and reads the word that she has just skipped because her finger is still pointing at it

A favorite survey panel of mine is now recruiting. I didn't mention it on the above post b/c they only recruit occasionally by invitation . I LOVE them b/c they pay you $3 per survey, you get to test tons of products, and after you test a product you get another $3 for a follow-up survey. The surveys are normally about 10-15 minutes long and they are sent based on your answers to screeners and your profile. So you always qualify for the survey and will get paid for it, even if they don't send you a product to test. I have tested a lot of really great full-sized products, and you get to keep them too. And they are a great starter panel b/c they only send you a few surveys per month. If you want to try out the survey-taking experience and have a few spare minutes a few times a month, I highly recommend you join. http://www.pineconeresearch.com/signup/ds632.aspx?&sid=BGRI missed it nhockaday, could you, please, let us know when they are recruiting again? And how often do they recruit: once a year, twice a year? Thank you. Karma for sharing.

Thank you so much KL for the link. Just today a librarian (we go to a story time) told us that we shouldn't use workbooks untill the child goes to a kindergarden, as the child will burn out by the time he needs to go to school. All they need to know is how to use potty, how to ties their shoes and 13 letters and their sounds. Every time our librarian comes from a conference she tells us that small children unable to read and we shouldn't teach them untill at least 4 years old. It sounded like I was commiting a crime by teaching my child. I felt really bad that my 2.5 year old is now step 2 in reading English.
Thx, KL, for this wonderful website and thanks to everybody who is sharing info here. I don't contribute much due to lack of time but I always give karma to everybody who shares here and keeps me going.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: My baby doesn't sleep well through the night - Help pls

My son who is turning 8mo old is not sleeping well through the night. He wakes up every 1-2 hrs and cries a lot. Its quite difficult for us to sleep as well. We feed him enough right before his bedtime but still wakes up and asks for milk (I still breastfeed). Sometimes even breastfeeding doesnt calm him down.
My little one did the same thing to me (every 1-2 hours she was crying and only nursing could calm her down), so I had to introduce a pacifier. It didn't solve the problem, but at least I didn't have to nurse her that often. There is a good book that can help you http://www.amazon.com/Healthy-Sleep-Habits-Happy-Child/dp/0449004023. I got this book from the library. Lots of people on this forum recomend it. It did work for me but not for long 1-2 months only and then things went back to "normal". For no apparent reason, no changes in the schedule, she started getting up once or twice at night again. She is 26 months old and even now she will sleep through the night once-twice a week. I read 2 books about sleeping habbits and tried them on my child, both technics worked but only for a month or two and I didn't have enough energy to go through the "training"again. I gave up. Just let it go as it goes. I have a friend and 2 of her kids were bad sleepers but her baby #3 started sleeping through the night being 2 weeks only. She didn't do anything different with this child, she says she is just getting rewarded for all the sleepless night with 2 elder kids. So I would recommend you to read that book and follow the instructions. It should help you. My PCP told me to just let the child cry out, because as soon as they start solids they shouldn't cry for food. Good luck, you really need one.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / A laptop for a toddler.
|
on: November 16, 2010, 04:30:47 AM

My daughter is 26 months old and once-twice a week she has to spend about 4 hours in the car (with a couple of 5-10 minutes breaks when she can get out and move a little bit). I'm looking for something to occupy her during those 4 hours. We tried reading books, but after going through 10-15 of them, she gives them up. I can't be next to her all the time so she needs something she can play by herself. I came up with an idea about a laptop, but don't know which one to get. She knows her ABCs, she is reading pretty well, knows basic shapes, colors, counts till 20. We had a baby laptop from Vtech she was playing with it from 3 months old till now I'm looking at this one http://www.squidoo.com/vtech-toddler-learning-laptop but didn't check it out at a store yet. May be somebody here already got a laptop for a child and can give me an advice. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: My baby is 13 months old and she still do not want to walk alone

My DD didn't walk alone till 13-14 months, she fell a couple of times and started asking for a hand every time when we needed to go somewhere. She was holding walls and furniture when she was home. At 12 months check up PCP told us not to worry about her walking alone, she was standing and holding her weight. No problem with walking, running and jumping now. Don't worry, Gilma, your DD will be fine. Give her some time, she will surprise you one day.
