BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / LR Curriculum Semester 1 for Child who knows YBCR and basic words?
|
on: January 29, 2010, 02:11:49 PM
|
I just purchased Little Reader yesterday and now I'm wondering, is some of the semester 1 content going to be too easy since she knows most of the basic animal, parts of the body, etc words from YBCR and from us using flashcards from the site already?
Is there anyway I can change out individual words, for example, change out the word dog for a different animal that she might not know and it still be in the rotation? Or do I have to just show my own playlists (or ones downloaded from the site) on my own after the curriculum lessons?
If I can create them ony my own, do I have to show them or can they be added to the rotation of words everyday? I hope that makes sense. I just got the program yesterday and I'm trying to learn and prepare as much as I can to add this to our "workload" next week. Thanks.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Doman Method Schedule - Adjustments for Arabic Vowel Patterns

Assalamu Alaikum Ayesha (and others)!
Let me just say we live in the Middle East so she will, inshallah, learn Arabic and we'd like her to start in a Quran/Arabic school program around age 3. So I just want her to have a good solid foundation since we're not native speakers ourselves. that way, hopefully, she will be able to aquire as much as she can (as much as the other Arabic speaking students as possible) without too much falling behind. Does that make sense?
For starters, I of course want her to know the basic just as in English: alphabets, numbers, shapes, colors, animals, etc but also basic sight words and common everyday phrases especially words she might see around her, that people use in everyday conversation, commands, etc. I know she will pick up a lot in school (many kids I know here did knowing NO Arabic) but being that we don't speak Arabic ourselves, I want to expose her to as much as possible. Interested only in teaching fusha. I expect she will pick up on the local dialect on her own as we have even in our limited Arabic. Just as in English, I'd only (directly) teach her proper/classical Arabic.
Does that help answer your question?
She is 2 years now and they begin accepting students around 3 years.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Starting YBCR at 2 1/2 years old

I started my LO after around 16 months I believe and after a few vieweings, she was bored or rather distracted by all the fun things to do around the house rather than sit and watch the videos. So after a week or so, I started showing the different videos and didn't worry about the schedule since, if she wasn't watching them, it didn't matter anyway. She watches videos on a small portable dvd player, so we also took it with us in the car when she had no choice but to sit and watch it, . Since we started late, I wasn't pressed about sticking to the schedule and just decided to show them when she showed interest. She still picked up a lot of the words suprisingly. Now, I show them at random so she doesn't get bored or wait til she seems bored with all the other things to do around the house to show the videos. I know your grandson is a bit older but maybe that will help.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: How I taught my toddler to read

I'm using YBCR though I stopped for a while because my LO didn't seem as interested anymore; too active. Now I'm showing once a day or a few times a week. A question about starfall . . . how often do you do it and how many letters did you do a day/week? I've been using it for quite some time now and before would just do two letters a day and then move on to our other two learning sites but I just started a focus letter a week though I still do two (a review or with the upcoming letter).
Now, I started doing two letters a day but focusing really on one letter a week, showing her power point flashcards of just that letter, words beginning with the letter, the letter around the house and short clips from sesame street I saved on youtube as a playlist. I'm not stressed about her learning the letters but thought, what the hay. It helps to organize our day, and so far, she seems to like it. I just was wondering, is a letter a week too slow?
I'm still doing power point flashcards but she really likes the letters so started that too.
I've always read to my LO but she only really became interested in sitting to read books with me since I weaned her (at 18 months). She always liked books but mostly wanted to take them to "read" on her own. Now, she reads several books before naptime and bedtime and is interested in stories rather than picture and her toddler board books. I think she really likes the books we have (it's a set from Scholastic) because I can pick out books with things she recognizes or that are familiar to her day. Also, the books are very simple (they teach site words to older kids) so don't have many words on the page.
Sorry, I ended up sharing more than asking but was just wondering about what I'm doing and what you thought.

Oh, I finally downloaded Little Reader so now they are opening for me. I forgot to try again. When I open them, they automtically open in Little Reader. Is there a way to download them to my computer instead?

Nohaya or anyone else who speaks Arabic,
I could never open the Arabic files for download on the site but finally started making a few of my own Power Points with Arabic words and pictures. I wanted to know though, if there's a site somewhere that can pronounce the words for me? I know how to record sounds myself but I'd rather a native speaker said the words. I'm thinking there's probably no program out there like this but perhaps something somewhere for just basic Arabic words?? If not, does anyone know how I can get someone else to record themselves saying the words but send them to me?

Can anyone direct me as to where I can find Arabic flashcards? I could make them myself but as English is my first language, it would take a bit longer. Also, if there are any lists of words online that I could just copy and paste to print or make PDFs, that would be great too. Thanks!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: maths equations

DomanMom, Thank you, thank you, thank you. Actually, when I got the email that there was a reply, I thought, I didn't post in a forum called Re: maths equations. I didn't even know I did that! So, no, , I didn't read the other posts. I thought I started a completely new thread! I don't know how that happened. Blame the sleep deprivation and being obsessed with reading too much about early learning. LOL. Thanks and sorry for replying in your thread!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Do I have the Doman method right for math? Help!
|
on: September 16, 2008, 08:41:23 AM

Trying to make sure before I begin teaching . . . So on day 1, I start with 2 sets of 5, numbers 1-10, three times a day. Then, on day 2, I take away two cards and add two cards. So it will look something like this? Day 1 (1-10) Day 2 (3-12) Day 3 (5-14) . . . and so on? Then after I get to the 30 or 40 mark (or is it 20 cards?), I start equations? Or do I just keep going to 100 and then start equations after that? Please help!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Newbie . . . . going to start "teaching to read" next week! ????s

Hi All,
Very excited to be here. I have a 10-month old daughter and I plan on teaching her starting next week. This week I am making some resources to use. I live outside the US right now, so I'm not sure if I will able to find some of the books I'm looking for so these forums were a great find! Right now, I'm in the process of reading as much as I can and making flash cards and trying to make my own version of Your Baby Can Read using home video.
Any suggestions or directions as to where to start would be greatly appreciated. I've found one or two helpful threads for getting started but also looking for examples of what others did with children less than a year. Also, if anyone has any personal experience starting at 10-months or what's best for around that age, please let me know.
One question I have now as far as some planning . . . I think I understand Doman's sequence of teaching how to read but I was wondering, if I'm starting with reading next week, how long do I keep this up before I move onto or adding math? Any suggestions as far as what you did, are doing or what is a suggested sequence for that? I know my LO will dictate much of the learning but I'd just like an idea of time frames. Thanks!
