Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Did you potty train your toddler early?

Babies (like all of us) feel when they are going pee-pee or poop and can try to at will and a bit later learn to hold it. The trick to early potty training is not letting them sit in full diapers, but rather teach to appreciate that clean feeling All of my kids almost never had a stinky diaper after turning one and got trained daytime shortly after. I remember my son at 14 mnth bringing his carry-on potty to the airplane I found it confuses them if you potty train at home but then tell them to go in their diaper while out shopping or at night, etc. My two younger are 18 mnth apart and since I wasn't going to have two kids in diapers, I potty trained the older one a couple months in advance of the new baby coming. My huge mistake: when she woke up at night, I was so tired that I would tell her to just go in diaper. That developed into such a pattern, that I couldn't take that night diaper off till she was 4! Her younger sister was trained first! To second beeemboo, it is possible to set your baby's potty times by encouraging them to go at regular intervals. My mom never had disposable diapers or plastic pants, so by 3month both my sis and I only peed our bed (or pram) when we slept (as she didn't believe in interrupting our sleep either ). Skylark, I think your situation is a little different. You never had to potty train!
What do you mean? She has a toddler...

Pat, thanks for the feedback. Will have to look into that. I agree. I have over 50 files and clicking 50 times on an arrow to push the newest or favorite files up is frustrating..
Yes, you can use Ctrl and/or Shift to select multiple files, and you can also drag and drop them elsewhere in the list. Did you not know that? I can select but not drag/drop, is it just me? More specifically not into a folder. OK, I managed, but getting it "picked up" was awkward to say the least and still very slow...

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Potty training - we've spent the whole morning in the bathroom!

I've started potty training my kids since 6-7mnth (once they sat up) and usually established a set of potty times throughout the day while they still wore diapers in-between. It's a no sweat policy as you have the advantage of both getting them to go potty and not having to clean up. The big stuff usually comes after sleep or meal, so by 9mnth I would hardly ever get a stinky diaper. For pee-pees try every half hour for a day and you'll see how many times he/she will actually go (potty or diaper) and adjust accordingly. Joining me in the bathroom worked well for my kids, though I drink a lot and don't have a strong bladder . No diaper time usually comes in the summer and happened between1.5 and 2 for my kids. Diaper free nights at 2.5-4. Don't stress, they won't stay in diapers forever though it helps greatly if they are not left in messy/full ones for long enough to get used to the feeling . For potty training older kids (2 and up) the counsel I'd have is to choose a stay at home week-end, give them lots to drink (like apple juice) and take them potty every 15 min or when they ask. They should get the point fairly quickly. km276, Lots of trips to start with was a good sign -he was exercising his new found "controls" -release and stop at will (like trying again to see what comes after a few minutes) If he is a deep sleeper nighttime might have to wait till his bladder develops more or you have to wake him (I am not a proponent of this method until the kid is older and it's embarrassing to be in diapers) cheers to all and success in potty training!

-keep the timing before or after nap, so nobody gets too fussy... -have some simple games (musical chairs, but put enough for everyone to get one) and play with the kids -stay relaxed no matter what last minute things didn't get done -get a balloon artist to come and twist for the party (that's me, ha-ha )

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Babies dehydration

Dear paps, depending on where you live (as if it's hot and dry in the house) the baby might get dehydrated quickly, you would have dry diapers (no pee-pee) as a sign. I can't remember by when the soft spot on the baby's head closes, but if he still has one it would dent in. Water is the best solution (esp. if there is no more vomiting) to help fight off whatever bug he got. I'll say a prayer for him tonight also .

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Interesting take on whole word veruses phonics
|

teaching phonics can cause you to have problems reading later and slow down your reading If you would present this to Latvian, Finnish, Swedish etc audience, they will say: "well, this can work only with English language because there written words differ so much from spoken words. They have different approach to reading. But with our language it will never work because here where spoken word consists from characters which do not change and influence each other!". (This is what our preschool education spacialists say about the whole word reading.) of course, you do not need to convince me. My brother was tought with whole word reading and I was tought with single characters. we both are similarly crazy book-eaters. This is similar to Russian plus the book font they use in all books makes all the letters look about the same as they all are the same height, so I was doubtful of sight reading Russian. Well, it's my kids' 3rd language and we took it up a year ago. I've taught them the alphabet and then just concentrated on flash card ppts. Now a year later I can see they sight read the words they have seen often and use their letter knowledge if I ask them to write something (which I do rarely). I think in any language we sight read eventually.
