19  The BrillKids Forum / Contests / Video Contests - What We Look For When Judging on: October 16, 2013, 10:10:44 AM
First of all, a huge thanks for all of you who have participated in our 6 video contests so far!

We've been very pleased with the interest shown in our video contests.  The submissions continue to pour in each time, and the overall quality has been getting higher and higher.

Like any contest, there is a large element of subjectivity in the judging, and no doubt there will be some of you who do not agree with our decisions.  I know I often disagree with judge's decisions, even when I have no direct interest in the result.  Sometimes I'm literally scratching my head to figure out how on earth could the judge(s) have considered one person to have been better/worse than another.  blink  mad

So before you cast your stones at us for our judging,  wacko  I think it would be helpful if we be a bit more explicit in what we're looking for in these contests.   big grin

In no particular order, here are some of the things we take into consideration and like to see:

Use BrillKids Products!

We sometimes get videos showing children reading, but if not a single video show you using Little Reader (in any form), then it's not going to work, however great the video is otherwise.  May we remind you to read the rules of the contest carefully.

Customization

We love seeing you customize your lessons, whether it's with personal photos, videos, words, or whatever!  You get HUGE bonus points for doing this.  One side-effect of customizing your lessons with personal files is that it tends to make the lesson much more enjoyable for your child, which leads us to the next one:

Fun

The best videos are those which show your child enjoying himself or herself during the lessons.  The more 'into' the lesson she is, the better!

Parent-Involvement

On the topic of fun, we find that the more the parents are involved, the more fun it is for the child.  Hence customized lessons involving the parents (or even more family members) tend to be extremely effective.

Age vs. Ability

Another big factor is whether your child is showing impressive ability in the subject-matter, whether it's in reading, math or music.  Naturally, the younger the child is, the more impressive it is for the same ability.  As a side-note, we'd like to see more people use the Pattern Phonics flip cards to show a clear grasp of phonics.

Uniqueness and Variety

We always like to see something different.  Many people have surprised us with creative ways of delivering lessons, so don't feel limited to just showing lessons on the computer screen.

Video Quality

First, we would much rather a video be in widescreen (16:9), and in high-resolution, as high as possible.

Second, if you're using smart phone to record the video, PLEASE don't record the video while holding phone vertically!  Turn it to horizontal (landscape) orientation, as otherwise the video would look terrible on Youtube.

Show your child's face

Speaking of video skills, yes it's important to show the viewer the words that your child is reading (otherwise how do we know how well she is reading?), but don't forget to also show your child's lovely face sometimes!!  The best videos would show both at the same time, with the camera alternating between the two.

Please note that there is absolutely no need for either you or your child to look great in terms of appearance, so know that there are no extra points for a fancy dress or makeup (not that there's anything wrong with those either).  You and your child could be in a totally disshevelled state and wearing  tattered and torn outfit for all we care.  It won't make any difference, positive or negative, so don't feel you have to bother to prepare for the video in that way.

Please feel free to ask if you have any questions related to this.  Hope the above guidance will give you a better idea of what we are looking for, and hope it inspires you all to make more videos for our next contest!

20  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Vaccination Causes Autism? [UPDATED - new US Court rulings] on: July 29, 2013, 12:14:06 PM
Some updates on this front. 2 court cases in the US confirming autism caused by vaccination, and a new independent study confirming the same thing:

21  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: My mom has cancer! I need your help!!! on: May 27, 2013, 11:33:25 PM
One thing I forgot to mention until I saw Krista's post - physical is only half of it - the other very important half is MENTAL.  Do not underestimate the importance of healing the mind. The physical symptoms are actually just a manifestation of issues in the mind, and a lot of it can be subconscious.

On that, I would recommend 2 things:

1. Read "Dying To Be Me" by Anita Moorjani:
http://www.amazon.com/Dying-To-Be-Me-Journey/dp/1401937535/

It's a New York Times bestseller and definitely one of the best books I've ever read. I would recommend anyone and everyone read this, because despite the title and nature of the topic, it's actually much more to do with living than dying.

Here's a Youtube video I found of her (haven't seen it yet, but she'll probably cover some of the basic things about her story):

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/tjLouLHH-_I&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/tjLouLHH-_I&rel=1</a>

(There are also subtitles in a few different languages.)

2. EFT (emotional freedom technique) which others have already mentioned above. Plenty of Youtube videos.

Above-all, everyone in the family would do very well to drop the fear that comes with this situation. I know i'ts easier said than done, but books like Dying To Be Me would help.
22  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: My mom has cancer! I need your help!!! on: May 26, 2013, 01:58:09 AM
So sorry to hear about this.

I'm glad she's not going to do chemo. That is absolutely the last thing I would ever do.

I believe there are many ways you can cure cancer (as well as many other so-called 'incurable' diseases).  Here are the top 3 things I would do if my Mom had cancer:

1. I would immediately have her start taking MMS:

http://mmswiki.org/index.php?title=Main_Page

You can find lots of info (including testimonials) about it over the Internet, through you'll also find quite a lot of DISinformation out there.

2. I would immediately get her to start taking a lot of Vitamin D3 - at least 5,000iu a day, probably 10,000iu.  (Actually she already takes that everyday).  Vitamin D3 can be purchased inexpensively from places like iherb.com .  BTW, I would recommend everyone take this too, whether you have cancer or not.
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/TQ-qekFoi-o&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/TQ-qekFoi-o&rel=1</a>
(specifically mentions colon cancer too.)
http://grassrootshealth.net/

3. I would get her a tabletop water distiller and start making distilled water.  Drink at least a gallon (4 litres) a day.  (If you're doing the MMS protocols, just use this distilled water alongside it.).  BTW I do this on a daily basis myself.
http://www.aquariusthewaterbearer.com/the-truth/the-simple-facts.html

And guess what the best thing about all the above is - because these methods are unpatentable, they are CHEAP!  And therein lies the 'problem'.  Cheap (and the fact you can't patent it) means there's not much money to be made, which means not much research done on it, which means it's very hard to get mainstream doctors and medical establishments to risk their medical careers and put their necks on the line by recommending them.  Because it has a direct impact on the billion-dollar pharmaceutical industry too, you will also find a lot of disinformation about a lot of this, to say the least.

If anyone has questions, feel free to also email me directly - KL(at)brillkids.com .

Splashtop would work on anything! smile

For those who don't know about Splashtop and how you can use it to enable you to access all our software through your iPad, read this:

http://forum.brillkids.com/little-reader/little-reader-available-on-the-ipad-today!/

For the sake of completeness:

- You can also install Splashtop on your Android device, and therefore use LR, LM, LMs on your Galaxy Tab, for example.

- This is possibly a solution that will be available in the near future - using the Chrome browser:
Just last night, I found out that Google recently released an extension called "Chrome Remote Desktop":
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chrome-remote-desktop/gbchcmhmhahfdphkhkmpfmihenigjmpp

Once set up (not too difficult), it will enable you to do the same as with Splashtop. Great thing is that you'd be able to do it simply through the browser, and it also transmits audio very well. However, as of today, I think the Chrome browser on the ipad (and probably on Android) doens't support this function yet. But do watch this space!

Yes there are plans but unfortunately it's very low in the queue - a lot of other things that need to get done first, including having LR on Android... Sorry!
27  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Potential CURE for AUTISM (important) on: November 21, 2012, 04:42:10 PM
If you're concerned, you might want to ask your questions on the Forum they have:

http://www.genesis2forum.org/
(though seems to be under maintenance right now).

I'm sure some of the chemists there can answer your questions.

But remember, we are talking about taking drops only, and thousands upon thousands of people have done it, including myself.  Waterdreamer, to answer your question, I tried it with Felicity once (I think one drop), but my wife is very conservative and prefers paying doctors for the standard medication. Since Felicity never has anything beyond the common cold etc., this is not a fight that I think is wise to take up. smile  However, my sister has tried it with her son when he was still an infant (the whole family takes it when necessary).

If I weren't sure, I would try even a 'half drop' - ie., put one drop, mix with apple juice or whatever, then drink half of that.

But again - this is just to put the info out there for you to do your own research, so you at least know there's this option available. If you don't feel comfortable with it, by all means don't try it.

PS - very exciting things have been happening recently (non-autism related). They recently opened a MMS 'center' in a hotel in Belgium where they treat people for free (you just pay the hotel food and lodging). Apparently, they got a lot of great results with illnesses like cancer, but the biggest thing was with an AIDS patient.  Previously, many AIDS patients have stopped having the symptoms, but still tested HIV positive.  Recently at this center, one AIDS patient later tested HIV negative!  Impossible? Too good to be true?

29  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Potential CURE for AUTISM (important) on: November 19, 2012, 05:54:01 AM
For where to get it, check out this site, which lists out sites approved by the founder:

http://www.mmswebsites.com/

Even though it's banned, they can still be sold by "Private Membership Health Associations".  However, that doesn't sometimes seem to stop the authorities from raiding the seller, and I think the Daniel Smith case linked to above was also set up this way and still got raided.
30  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Potential CURE for AUTISM (important) on: November 19, 2012, 05:34:33 AM
Yep, I think it was also banned in Australia.

If you take it just at that superficial level, you certainly would not try it, on the assumption that there's nothing more than meets the eye.  Basically, if you have 100% trust in the medical establishment and the FDA, then this is not for you.

They've also gone after MMS suppliers in the US too. Read the links I first posted, by the USObserver:

http://usobserver.com/archive/june-12/fda-targets-family-man.htm

http://usobserver.com/archive/june-12/mms-myth-or-miracle.htm

If anyone's interested in Jim Humble (the founder)'s response to the banning in Canada and Australia, let me know - I'll try to dig it up, or put you in touch with him.
