BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / Re: best way for us to use LM with Down Syndrome

Hi! I am not an expert at all in DS and teaching older kids, I'm just trying to teach my two year olds, but I can tell you about our experience. LM worked for us when my twins were about 14-16 months, but we didn’t use the curriculum much. We played the red dots and the numerals. They got the principles of counting, learnt to subitize (but only up to 3), and learnt the numerals. But they got bored quickly. What works for us now at 25 months old is the iPad. Math apps like Eurotalk, Slate Math, Bugs and buttons (not only math but good for counting, and they love the bugs), Teach Me Toddler, etc. And of course counting anything you find in your everyday life… cookies, steps, flowers, sheep… whatever! Hope this helps… keep us informed!

I think we all feel we are not doing enough sometimes... some of us almost every day! You read and read here in the forum and everybody is doing soooo much, while you just manage to show them a few words and, if you're lucky, a little bit of music! I also have two under two (twins). Lately I have asked for daddy's help, because I have very limited time during the week. We choose a subject and he is in charge of getting all the images, so I can do new Little Reader presentations very quickly! About the books, when my twins where around 12 months, it was impossible to make them sit and listen. They would jump, and play, and shout and run around the room. But I kept on reading. Every night I took two or three books and just read. After some days-weeks they began to approach, now they come, put their heads on my shoulders and listen... and for me it is the best moment of the day. Just try, she will be interested sooner or later. Anyway, I'm sure you are doing a very good job!

Mine are also 21 months old and we went through that stage around 2 months ago. I took a 10 day break from LR and it worked relatively well. Now they don't say no and they ask for the game, another game, and another game... I also got Wink to learn and I alternate with LR, most times they like it but sometimes they say no... then I switch off and get a book. It is not always easy...

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Stuck with EL
|

I am beginning to feel that I am getting stuck with EL with my twins. They are 21 months old now. I don’t have much time, so we do some reading in Spanish with Wink to Learn and LR (once or twice a day, and I read to them at bed time, of course), LR for English, LMus and LM (once)… from time to time we watch Sparkabilities… but my feeling is that we are not progressing as fast as at the beginning, when they were 12 months old. There are so many things to teach that I honestly don’t know where to start and how to do it… It also seems that in English there are many more resources than in Spanish, and I would like to focus their reading and EK in Spanish… I’m feeling quite lost. And there’s also the “no testing” issue. They used to like performing but now it is impossible to get an answer, especially for reading, so I gave up completely some months ago, I never ask them to read a word for me. I have absolutely no idea of their progress. Could you give me some ideas in order to progress with EL in general? Should I be doing anything else? Sorry for being so vague!

Thank you Tamsyn for this post! When my twins were 11-12 months old I was quite worried about their development. Something had to be "special" in either one or the other. She was so advanced in comparison. If she was "normal" then maybe he had some problem, and if he was "normal", then she was very advanced. So I googled a lot on baby development stages and somehow I got to Brillkids page. When I saw those babies reading... I just had to try and give that incredible chance to my children!! I read Doman's books... everything made sense... So after a few tries I found my way with Little Reader for English and my own files for Spanish, Little Math, Little Musician... And here we are, at 20 months. They have learnt large amounts of things, although now I'm not keeping track anymore because I stopped testing a few months ago. At first they liked to perform, but after some months I felt I was losing them because of that. So now, absolutely no testing and input, input, input... There are still large differences between them, but my son has been able to learn the alphabet, lots of sightwords, shapes, numerals, etc, so now I'm convinced there's nothing I should worry about.
