EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / What activity, at what age?

I am presently doing reading and math with my LO. Will do EK in due course. Waiting for Little Musician to come to start off with music. Apart from this, I want to know what other activities I can get my LO involved in and at what age.
What has been your experience? What other activities did you teach your LOs and at what age did you teach them or what age do you think will be apt to teach them a particular activity, (like swimming, painting, dancing, other stuff...).
Your suggestions/ideas will help people like me get organized and decide upon priorities...

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Let's brag about our babies!!
|

This thread is for all those who want to brag about their babies....Let me be the first one to start... Well, I am really excited today. My 9-mo baby, for the last couple of weeks, has been saying words like "ello," "geen," "Bu-ooo" (yellow, green, and blue). He also says yaychee (for A/c). Now I am really happy about what happened now. There is a stray dog outside our home. Our little one saw that coming and said "dog" !!! I am really excited about this because this particular dog has multiple names like blackie, jackie, juju, bo-bo etc. which he hears very often from other family members. I am very glad that he has picked up the right word inspite of getting to hear all the other names more often. KL, I must thank you for this. Because though he knew the word before (I have been doing the Doman method since he was 4-1/2 months), I think all this vocalization is coming because of the multisensory part in your curriculum. Its been only 2 weeks since we are into LR and I am already beginning to see results!! Hats off to you and your great team! Okay, I am done with my bragging...who's next?...

Putti_amma - Welcome! You can start to teach reading English to your daughter. It will not confuse her. There are many parents in this site teaching very small babies even 3 or 4 languages at a time. So you can definitely start teaching to read English. You can simultaneously talk with her in English, so that she understands the meaning of the words she sees in context and action. Your mother tongue with come to her automatically, so you need not worry about that.
Garry - Welcome! If your daughter is 3+, then you can continue teaching phonetics. Doman method is based on flashing words for younger babies (i.e. babies who cannot understand the logic of phonetics) to see...Montessori is a good way of learning...You can continue that.
If you are talking about Aspire Superkids, they have several courses. But their "My Smart Baby" course claims to follow the Doman method, where they sell flashcards. I am not sure about their other courses for 3+ kids. But regarding "My Smart Baby," I think it will not suit your need. Even for parents with smaller babies, I would suggest gathering information about Doman's method in this site or from Doman's books directly than enrolling with MSB or Little Gems. This is because some children (not all) will just refuse to see physical flashcards.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: What? My boy laughing at LM?

Its a nice feeling isn't it when we know that our kids really enjoy what we teach them... My kid gives a big smile when he sees the logo on the screen and is all smiles throughout the session. I have just started LM with him. Hope to keep this interest going! You really have a lot of patience, I must say, for not having tested him so long!! How long have you been doing LM with your son? Doman says you can do problem-solving sessions after finishing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and divisions. Now that you have finished them and now that your son really likes what he sees, why don't you try a prob-solving session and let us know how it went. Just curious! Questers.

Vani,
You can add pictures too for the words if you want. Show the word first, then the picture next. But you may not be able to show pictures for all the words you may want to show, (like for adjectives long, short, thin, big, fat etc). So you may start off with names of objects or other things that might interest him. No hard and fast rules, except don't show the word and picture on the same page. This is because the child may be interested in looking at the picture than the word.
Before I bought LR, I tried changing the font color and the background color every time, so that kept me going. Now with LR, my baby is interested with the different pictures and videos he gets to see for the word. If LR is an option, you can try that.

Shuki,
Sorry for the threadjack, but since you mentioned about Adobe Flash, I want to ask you this:
LR takes a lot of time to load. It also takes sometime to migrate between tabs. Is this because it has a lot of data in it (its newly purchased, so not much old content) or is it because of the Adobe Flash ?
Can you please clarify this for me?
Thanks, Questers.
