Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Has anyone given PediaSure to their child?

In Canada we have Pedailyte - it comes unflavoured. It almost tastes like water but a little thicker and a little stanger. When my dd was sick for a few days I mixed the Pedialyte with juice and gave it to her. She never really knew she was drinking it because I gave it with juice. It takes a little more liquid overall to get the correct amount of Pedialyte into a child, but this way I didn't have to worry about her thinking about taking 'medicine'.
Hope all is well soon.

I did read Thomas Verny, Connecting with your Unborn Child, the 1986 copyright. The book was interesting, but I think because of the old copyright date a lot of what is in his book is now common knowledge. I liked the book because it helped me understand how much a fetus knows and at what stage. However, I found the book lacked some practical ideas of what a mother can really do at each stage of pregnancy.
It was a wonderful introduction, but now I am after the next step. I know Thomas Verny has written a more recent book, but I have been unable to find it in Canada.
If it was the only book you are going to read - I wouldn't buy that one. However, if are interesting in getting a better background on a fetus, the book is very useful.
Thanks for the posts, I am still waiting to see if anyone has read Mak Wai Chung's book.

I like to use a pair of panties inside a pull-up during long outings where I am worried about accidents. The cotton panties help separate my dd bottom from the plastic and helps her (and me) know when she is wet, and the pull up absorbs any accidents. Funny thing is usually when I do this, she arrives home dry. Of course, then I try just the panties and she has an accident!

Congrats Daddude and family.
I'm also expecting another in December and I am currently worried I won't have enough energy to keep up the teaching with all of them. Looking forward to your inspiration.

Oh, me too. Currently 11 weeks pregnant. I seem to need a nap about an hour after waking up. The energy required to dress and eat breakfast is too much! I have a 2 1/2 year old and it is tough to meet her needs all day long. I have been trying to put a few books and toys by my bed so I can half doze for a few minutes through out the day and know my daughter is content and safe playing in my room.
I have been eating ginger to help with the nausea. It does seem to help. I didn't know about blueberries, I will try them as well. I hope the worst of the tiredness and nausea is over soon.
I have put most of the teaching for my dd on hold for the last month - I just don't have the energy to sustain it. I am hoping to resume after the summer. I'm trying not to feel too guilty about it, I just can't do it all right now.
I have been doing a bootcamp for exercise and do feel better shortly after the class. However, I also find myself extra tired the next day. Perhaps a little less exercise but more frequently better suits pregnancy, I might change things around.
Growing life turns out to be very hard work!

I was also surprised to find that my daughter enjoyed small chapter books at 27/28 months. We had been reading the picture books of Little House on the Prairie, and then I found some small abridged chapter books of Little House on the Prairie. I would read a chapter at bedtime and she loved the small chapter books. It might have helped that she was familiar with the characters and the content from the small picture books, so it was a natural transition. When we finish all the small chapter books - I have 3 more - then I might try moving onto the full unabridged versions of Little House on the Prairie.
I read a book on the 'Trivium' concept of home schooling. It discusses encouraging an early love of classical literature by finding children books of the classics and then slowly working they way up to the original book. I like the idea, but other than Little House on the Prairie, have yet to pursue it further.
Thank you DadDude for your list of classical books.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: What is your favorite place to take a walk with your children?

Trying to keep Doman's suggestion of walking every day in mind, I try to walk in town from my house to the store or post office at least a few times a week. I do have access to one walking path, but I have to drive there and find I only get out there once a week. The process of crossing the street with a distracted toddler is difficult, my luckily I live in a small town without a lot of traffic.

L and J, I believe you! Wish I had some advice for you, but I don't. I can say that my daughter is also 28 months. She rarely naps in the afternoon. She doesn't go to sleep until 11pm and sometimes it is midnight or later. She wakes up before 9 in the morning.
I have accepted that my daughter does not require as much sleep as the average child. She is happy/content most of the time. Of course, one could always do more, but my daugter is reasonable active, so I don't think her lack of sleep is effecting her.

The math dots are still important, even if your child loses the ability to percieve, they don't lose the ability to understand. If you child is bored with the dots, try moving on to equations and/or switiching your dots to stickers or other pictures. Remember to be fast!
Reading - there are lots of options, but I still like basic Doman Flashcards.
Physical Stuff - Have you done any brachiation/Hanging bar? We are using a basic 2x4 on the floor for a balance beam.
Good Luck.
