181  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: Fostering on: January 01, 2009, 07:34:23 AM
iv'e noticed in my own personal experience that when we second guess ourselves as to whether we are doing the right thing or whether we will be able to continue with our commitments, we end up holding back from what we really want.

you people have done an amazing thing by fostering a child. by giving a child who didnt have a great start a positive life.

i think that you should do what your heart tells you.
think about how you would feel if you didnt have this baby.
your emotions will help guide you to a good decision.

good luck.
182  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: Are you in favour of the epidural? on: January 01, 2009, 07:26:24 AM
i always thought that i had a very high threshold for pain.
when i was in the labour room i realised i didnt.
i asked for an epidural in the middle of the night. the anaesthetist came in and after that i was pain free.

when i look back i think it was the best thing for me as after i delivered which was 5:45am i was not tired or in pain. so it was extremely easy for my son and i to bond.

i put him in my gown and did kangaroo care with him and it was lovely.
he was also alert for quite some time before he slept.

however they had to use a forceps to take him out as there was meconium in my fluid which the nurse didnt pick up.
Thank goodness he was just fine.

for my next baby i will persevere a bit more but wont hesitate to use the epidural because the bonding experience was wonderful.

186  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / recipes for play dough on: December 31, 2008, 10:16:08 AM
Recipe for play dough

1 cup flour
1 tablespoon oil
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
Quarter cup of salt
1 cup water

Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Add flavouring (essence) and
food colouring. Use a whisk and mix until smooth.
If possible use a nonstick pot or pan and pour batter into this.
Put stove on high and stir or move liquid around almost like
One does scrambled eggs. Put a rubber glove on one hand
And turn playdough over a few time till it looks right. Remove
From pan and knead from hand to hand until ready.

Recipe for finger paints

1 cup sugar
1cup cake flour
1 cup cold water
3 cups boiling water
Powder paint or food colouring

Mix the sugar, flour and cold water. Add boiling water and cook
For two to three minutes until thick.
Colour with paint or colouring.

Recipe for “soap paint”

Collect all the leftover pieces of soap in a container.
When the container is about 3 quarter full, top it up
With boiling water and let it stand for a day until it is
Soft like jelly
Stir well and mix with powder paint.
(makes lovely finger paint that washes off easily)

189  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Letting a 2 year old go back to the breast on: December 31, 2008, 09:12:07 AM
breast milk definitely has its merits. there are so many harmful substances in the powder milk. i have weaned my son off this week as he wakes up about 8 times at night for feeds. i however feel feverish and tired and just gross. is that normal?
190  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / what happens when our einsteins go to school on: December 31, 2008, 07:32:09 AM
hi there.

my son is now 1 yr and 7 months.i have to start applying to schools from now as there are waiting lists at many of the good schools.

before i knew about the reading programme, my sons schooling was pretty much mapped out. now however that he is reading and being exposed to so much on brill kids, i dont know if going the regular schooling route would be good enough for him or the best.
i am considering home schooling but im not sure if that is the best option. i know my child will cope excellently in school and he would enjoy knowing and learning but i dont want him to be an outcast or treated differntly by his teacher. i am not sure if teachers are well equipped to deal with this kind of child we are all rearing. would my son be ostracised in any way?

will his teacher get frustrated having a know it all. i dont mean to be so blunt or arrogant. my child has learnt what he has through the grace of God and all the people that provide these learning materials but the fact is that he is superb and there is no hiding from it.

what plans have u people for the years ahead? i would like to know so that i can make the best decision for Sa'ad.

191  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: speech? on: December 31, 2008, 06:52:19 AM
wow! its amazing how developing our bodies in a physical way has an effect on our speech!

i run a  mum and baby class and i have a 20 month old who isnt speaking clearly as yet.  his mom is starting to worry as her first born was reading at 3. i was wondering if somersaulting and foward flips would help expand the lungs and hence have an effect on speech? does swimming have the same effect?

i noticed that the reading programme is helping this boy as he is able to say single syllable words that he has learnt more clearly. he has also started to hum along to songs that we sing. he follows instructions amazingly well. in fact ive never seen a child actually do what his mother tells him all of the time. i hope that recommending more physical activities will help his speech as he is getting frustrated when he cant find the words  or get his message accross.

i will definiitely research the effect that fine motor skills has on speech.
192  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: explaining this to others! on: September 12, 2008, 06:57:30 PM
i feel so relieved.
i am so glad that i am not the only one.
i get those crazy looks and i feel so stupid after ive tried to explain early reading and get that strange look. the one that says yea we believe you, not!
i love this website and i am glad i found it when i did
193  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Gentle Revolution and Glenn Doman's method on: September 12, 2008, 06:42:21 PM
hey there!

i cant believe my good fortune and luck to have stumbled upon brillbaby.
finally i can communicate with people who believe with certainty that babies can read and they love to.
in my country South Africa it is extremely difficult to tell people about all of this coz im sure when u guys found this out you just wanted to shout it out to the world! people i know feel that babies should be just babies and nothing more. certainly not geniuses.

i stumbled accross the doman series of books or maybe they found me and i havent looked back ever since.
glenn doman makes so much of sense. i cant believe that he is 90 years now and his work is amazing.
my son is 16months and loves is books. as he learns to say a new word he can often read it as well.

if i hadnt read the book "how to multiply your babies intelligence" i dnt know what i would have done. smile
