196  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Sign language with hearing toddlers on: February 23, 2013, 10:28:43 PM
That's great to hear kiwimun. How is your experience with negative opinions? Do you have people in you family against the way you communicate with your child?
197  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Skype friends to help in a second language - like a virtual playgroup on: February 23, 2013, 02:51:29 PM
Hello Everyone! I know this subject was already started, but I saw that it was in 2010.

I'm new here and I'd like to know if there is some kind of virtual playgroups between friends here. Not kid-to-kid on Skype, but adult-kid.

For example: an American mother who doesn't speak Mandarin and is teaching his child with Little Reader may have a pal in this forum with Mandarin language as mother tongue. They could schedule some fast sessions for reading books, etc. The same American mother could help the mother who helped her or even another one.

Is this happening here?

I would be interested in someone native in English, but other languages could also be interesting for casual sessions and making new friends.

I could be available for Brazilian Portuguese.  big grin
198  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Teaching Art - Colors in different languages on: February 23, 2013, 02:36:21 PM
Hello velvetkatze,

If understood well, I guess I'm doing the same. I teach my son color names in English, and I'm letting the "world" and my wife teach it for him in Portuguese. But for those cases when, for example, there are more names for the same color variation in a different language, I have no case to tell you. But I guess that for me this happens with some other words, for example the "to be" verb. In Portuguese there is two verbs with different meanings for the same verb "to be".

For example: I am happy.

In Portuguese I can say "Eu sou feliz", which means, I am a happy person, or "Eu estou feliz", which means I am happy now.

I guess kids learn that difference quite well without explanation needs, just the way they learn irregular verbs and sight words.

About colors, main resources I use is a book, with colors and names written in English, a cartoon called Color Crew and Lego parts when I play with him I say the name of the colors. I do the same when we play with cars, or when we see flowers on the street.

I hope this may help you  yes

Regards,

Mario

199  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Best Japanese Resources for Hiragana & Katakana on: February 23, 2013, 02:17:02 PM
By the way, I agree with Mandabplus3, although I have no experience in Japanese language. But my father, who is Brazilian but is son of Japaneses, learned Hiragana when he was a child with my grandmother teaching him using "manga". So, Hiragana is easier to start with.
200  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Best Japanese Resources for Hiragana & Katakana on: February 23, 2013, 02:09:34 PM
Hello everyone!

For those teaching a language you don't speak, I have a question: do you try to create an environment for the child to receive that language? Do you think this is not necessary?

For example: if you are going to show a video in Youtube for Hiragana, but you never speak those letters. I wonder if it's necessary to create a routine.

Although I have this question, my opinion is that this is not needed, although it may help.

I'd like to read what you guys think.

Have a nice weekend!

Mario

Thanks kiwimum.

Very interesting. My son is 18 months and I signed to him since he was born. Now he is talking and I always wonder when should I stop sign to him. It's very nice to read about your experience.

203  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Baby of 16 monthly nearly 17months on: February 23, 2013, 12:53:41 PM
My son is 18 months and I'm also in the trial period with Little Reader. So far he is not enjoying so much. I think he is too much used with iPad interations. I'm from Brazil, but I'm raising him with Portuguese and English and for us I don't think the problem of Little Reader is English since I read books in English to him.

When I show Little Reader to my son he leaves after some seconds or few minutes. He enjoys when i show our family and airplanes.

Hello Tonya,

I've read those two Free eBooks available from BrillKids: Teaching your baby to read and Teaching with little reader.

I also saw a lot of webpages in this site and forum. I'm amazed and I'm still in trial period, but so far...

I can't get my son's attention. At first I could have no attention. Later in the following day I could have him to watch an entire session. But he never wants to see it.

At first, he was always trying to get the mouse. But then when he understood what the software was about, he started paying attention without catching the mouse.

I tried to change the place. I took the laptop from our office and I put in his bedroom. Useless.

Two days ago I downloaded the Little Musician Trial. He enjoyed and saw twice the entire first session. But since yesterday, as I put him in my lap, he stays for 30 seconds and then leave. If he can see that I'm on the computer, he goes another room.

I'm not forcing him, and as soon as he wants to leave I let him go.

What should I do? Any advice or thread to read? Should I try something else more outside computer instead of Little Reader?

Regards,

Mario
206  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: How did you teach your child to speak a foreign language? on: February 21, 2013, 11:21:32 PM
I agree that the best method is OPOL but the experts that I've read said you shoudn't be so strict on it, since it may stress you in sometimes you don't feel like speaking in your non-native language.

My son is 18 months and I always speak in English with him, but there are some times and some words that I prefer speaking in Portuguese, my native language.

Thank you!

And do you know if there is anyone here that doesn't even speak Chinese but are using LR in Chinese with their children? I mean, as a support for a foreign language  wub

210  Parents' Lounge / Introduce Yourself / Greetings from Brazil on: February 18, 2013, 12:12:34 AM
Hello everyone!

Here is Mario, Arthur's father. I subscribed today to Brillkids and I'm in with the trial LR period. I have read some threads in this forum and I'm feeling very comfortable here since there are many people in this forum who think like me.

My son is 17 months. We are a Brazilian family but with a bilingual environment. I speak to my son in English and my wife speaks to him in Portuguese. So far he understands pretty well both languages but speaks English better.

We also use Baby Signs with him, which he understands and sign back and there are some people who speaks German with him.

Early reading is new to me, although I always read to him in English pointing the words since he was 4 months.

As many fathers, I have a lot of doubts. For example: by using LR, I'll introduce reading to him very early in a language (English) that won't be his main language. Has anyone here with a similar experience?

Thanks,

Mario
