That is cool that you are going to focus on the baby and family for the first few months. I did hibernate a bit, but looking back I should have hibernated more. When you resurface and are interested in seeking a Doman Style, Cloth Diaper/Elimination Communication, Unconditional parent drop me a line. I am sporadic about my trips to Calgary but I usually visit about 8-10/year and stay for a week to ten days at a time. Kindersley isn't the most understanding community about early childhood development so I am always seeking support in larger centres. Looking forward to seeing you around on Brillkids. BTW, you should consider joining

I am just wondering if there is anyone in or between Saskatoon and Calgary? And if so, if they might be interested in starting an in person Mom's Group? I live in Kindersley which is located between Calgary and Saskatoon. I have family in both cities and am frequently travelling to one or the other.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Baby is Happy
|
on: November 05, 2009, 06:11:19 AM

I just wanted to share that my dd read her first sentence today. I just started posting short sentences on the wall a few days ago. I changed the sentence today during her nap. After her nap she walked past the sentence 'Isabelle is happy' and read it. I was too stunned to say or do anything and she went on to play with some toys.
I haven't really been consistent about any of her teachings. I have used a variety of techniques off and on (and lately more off) for almost a year. Up until now I haven't had much positive feedback that she was learning anything. This at least seems like some motiviation to continue and hopefully expand my haphazard approach.
For everyone else out there that is worried that you need to be organized and consistent to teach - thankfully my dd just proved that idea wrong. Maybe she would learn better or faster, but I suspect that if I waited until I was organized she would be in her 50's before I could even start.
I am just soooo happy that some of my efforts are helping.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Interested in Pictures of homemade BIT cards

Linzy,
I have purchased posterboard and cut it into 11X11 squares already. I can't order from the Gentle Revolution Store b/c the international shipping is way too expensive for my budget. I have my POI researched. I'm not sure about the quality of my pictures. And I am lacking confidence in my cut, paste, glue abilities! I don't own a laminator and do not have easy access to one. Do I really need to laminate?
I would love to see a picture of your cards, but by the looks of your Due Date - you might not have time! Hope all is well and all goes as you hope.
Thanks again.

I checked the shipping on Doman Bit Cards and it is way too much for my budget. I am thinking of making my own BIT cards. I am trying to collect some ideas of how to make the cards and what the final product should look like. Would it be possible for anyone out there to post pictures of what their homemade BIT cards look like? I am would appreciate it, thanks.

Guest, I'm curious where in Canada you are located?
Chapters.ca has a few copies of HTTYB to be Physicall Suberb. I first borrowed the book from the library a few months ago, but just recently decided to buy the book. I am currently waiting for Slow Slow Canada Post to deliver it to my SK mailbox. My 'baby' is almost 2 years old so way too late on the crawling track, but I would consider it if I ever have another. I want the book because we are going to try to make the Monkey Bars in our basement this winter. SK is a long cold winter.
Very interested in seeing pictures of your finished product!
Good Luck.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: transition from infant crib to toddler bed

I moved my dd from half sleeping in her crib/half co-sleeping, to her own double mattress on the floor at one year of age. At 20 months I put a bedframe under the double mattress. She still co-sleeps about 20% of the time, but she is happy to sleep in her own bed and room. I did the transition by laying down with her until she fell asleep. Good Luck.

Well, I wish I had the time to watch t.v. My dd didn't sleep much as a baby and still isn't sleeping as a toddler. Most days when she sleeps I sleep. When she is awake I am either teaching her, playing with her, or trying (usually unsuccessfully) to get my house in some order. However, I keep hoping that one day I will be organized and well rested enough to do any of the following: Write a letter to my dd every day. Right now I only do this about once a week. Finish her baby book. Print baby pictures and make a picture book. Organize vacation photos from 3 years ago. Read any one of about 20 parenting books I have sitting on my bookshelf. Paint the stairwell. Organize the growing pile of paper beside my desk. Sort through bags and bags of hand-me-up clothes. Make more BIT cards. Make felt shapes for geometry teaching. Get involved in volunteerring in the community.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Resuming Doman math cards after a break -- need advice

Quiet Cricket. Thankfully my dd still likes LM but only 1 very short session a day. I think that is better than what happened with LR where she just cries before it even opens.
Have you looked through the free powerpoint area on brillkids? I thought I saw some dot slideshows that would you could piece together.
I am positive any bit helps even it it doesn't strictly follow Doman. Good Luck.

Quiet Cricket. First Condolances.
Awesome job getting to 50 on the Doman Cards. I didn't make it past 40 with my dd around the same age 17-18 months. I tried the equations but she never seemed interested. I took about a 2 month break and then I purchased LM and started at Day 1. I have followed the cirriculum and we are now on day 63. Of course it has taken me closer to 3 months to get to day 63, but I am still happy with the success.
I also try to do equations (without any props) by just saying the words, example 2 Plus 2 equal 4. I do these when she is swinging at the park and every push I say a word. She LOVES that. We also jump on the trampoline and we count our jumps. On our daily walks I try to count whatever interests her that day, and maybe find a way to incorporate an equation or two. She seems to pay attention to the math when she is also doing physical activities.
To really answer your questions. If I didn't have LM - I wouldn't have started from scratch again. I would just pick up where you left off. Start quantity at 51 and equations using #'s 1-50. From the equations he will re pick up the quantities. Good Luck.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: dd lost interest in LR, what can i do please

Zoe22. Glad to read my dd isn't the only one who has lost interest. She loved LR for the first 80 days. I loved the cirriculum. Now she only cries when I start LR and asks for starfall.com instead. I tried not following the cirriculum, doing different languages, just showing the picture, just showing the words, and a few other variations. She cries at it all. I decided to give it a month break and then try again.
In the mean time I have been using the YBCR flashcards once a day and she still loves those. I have also been making my own Doman style flashcards, which sometimes she loves and sometimes she ignores. I just try to keep positive and do a little bit of what I can. Unfortunately, I have to remind myself daily that the magic of learning is within her and I have to follow her lead.
Good luck to you. Thanks for sharing.
