242  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / LR only launches IE (What about Firefox?) on: September 22, 2008, 11:24:01 PM
i posted an elaborate bug report with the form and all and i cant seem to find it posted  confused
but this one is easier -
when you try to access the web from in the reader to download or other jobs, it automatically spawns internet explorer - an anathema to my computer - and it drastically drains my resources - how about some love for firefox users?  i think its a simple routine ...
243  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Encyclopedic Knowledge program-Domanmom need help on: September 22, 2008, 09:17:33 PM
here is the poi for the first 3 paintings by vincent van gogh
will post more tomorrow
enjoy

Wheatfields with Crows

1 Wheatfield with Crows was painted by Vincent van Gogh

2 Wheatfield with Crows was painted at Auvers-sur-Oise, France

3 Wheatfields with Crows is a painting, Oil on canvas

4 The wheat in this field is ready to be harvested.

5 Notice the black crows against the blue skies and golden wheat.

6 Wheatfields with Crows was painting in July 1890

7   In this painting Vincent used vivid colors, thick application of paint and distinctive swirls and spirals brush strokes.

8 Wheat fields with Crows is one of van gogh’s last paintings.

9 Today Wheatfields with Crows is in the Van Gogh Museum, in Amsterdam

10 Vincent van Gogh painted a painting a day in the last 70 days of his life.

Extra
Van Gogh talked about this canvas in a letter to Theo, describing it and another work he was painting at the same time as having "enormous outstretched wheatfields beneath angry skies." He continues, "I have consciously tried to express sadness and extreme loneliness in them." He communicates that sense very successfully.

Portrait of Patience Escalier

1 Portrait of Patience Escalier was painted by Vincent van Gogh

2 Portrait of Patience Escalier was painted in Arles, France

3 Portrait of Patience Escalier is a Painting, Oil on Canvas

4 A gardener and shepherd named Patience Escalier is the man in the painting.

5 Patience is wearing a straw hat with a red ribbon woven in it.

6  Portrait of Patience Escalier was painted in August, 1888

7   Vincent van Gogh’s brush strokes were short choppy dashes, slashes, dots and swirls. He used bold colors and laid the paint on very thick. Sometimes he would squish the paint onto his canvas straight from the tube.

8 Vincent van Gogh paint Patience Escalier three times. He like to paint him because he reminded he of his father.

9 Portrait of Patience Escalier is in a Private Collection.

10 Van Gogh spent a year as a missionary to coal miners in Belgium.

Starry Night Over the Rhone

1 Starry Night Over the Rhone was painted by Vincent van Gogh

2 Starry Night Over the Rhone was painted at Arles, France

3 Starry Night Over the Rhone is a painting - oil on canvas

4 Vincent painted the reflections of the lights in the city across the glimmering blue water of the Rhône

5The sky above is illuminated by the constellation known as the Great Bear
                                   Or
if you look close you can see two boats and two people walking

6 Starry Night Over the Rhone was completed September 1888

7 Vincent used a lot of little dashes of bold color in this painting

8 The challenge of painting at night intrigued Van Gogh.

9 Starry Night Over the Rhone is now at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris

10 Depicting color was of great importance to Van Gogh. In letters to his brother, Theo van Gogh, he often described objects in his paintings in terms of color

extra
In a letter to his sister Wilhelmina, Van Gogh said "At present I absolutely want to paint a starry sky. It often seems to me that night is still more richly coloured than the day; having hues of the most intense violets, blues and greens. If only you pay attention to it you will see that certain stars are lemon-yellow, others pink or a green, blue and forget-me-not brilliance. And without my expatiating on this theme it is obvious that putting little white dots on the blue-black is not enough to paint a starry sky."

244  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: whats the difference between the Shichida method and Glenn Domanns? on: September 22, 2008, 06:55:35 PM
seems to be that the Shichida method is about making money
it is very hard to find information about it
you have to pay tons of money to go to his schools
parents are told not to talk about it
and you can't even find books about it
if Shichida emphasis is a good heart to be a better person
why wouldn't he try to make this available to all children?
why should just rich kids be able to learn this stuff if it's so great?

Glenn Doman to me is all about the mom is the best teacher
you can do all of his programs at home
information is easily available to all though cheap books
everyone who wants can use his method
and tell others about it
he has done a lot of work for poor nations
and his goal is for all children to be healthy smart and kind
which would make a better world for all

maybe i am misunderstanding Shichida
if so i would love to learn more

245  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Encyclopedic Knowledge program-Domanmom need help on: September 22, 2008, 06:22:31 PM
the time it takes to make a poi varies a lot
i don't want to scare anyone a way from doing this great program
some programs like animals are really easy because the info is easily available
i did all the poi's for 14 cats in about two hours total
sadly that got lost so i no longer have them Sad
the reason art takes so long is because to answer some of the seemly simple questions
takes a great deal of knowledge about the artist and about that particular work of art
but even that gets easier your first five will take forever but after that it's not so bad

a board would be wonderful
all my poi are just word docs or written on the back of my bits
since i just discovered little reader and have been working on my GD program off and on for two years
so i have a lot of bits made that i won't be putting on little reader but would still love to share the poi for them

by the way does everyone know how to make poi?
in the book GD gives a very simple formula for each of the categories
so you just have to fill in the blanks as you find the information for each bit
if anyone doesn't have the Encyclopedic Knowledge book i would be happy to post the formulas for the ten categories

246  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Encyclopedic Knowledge program-Domanmom need help on: September 22, 2008, 04:47:31 AM
i am trying to plan ahead
she has just seen 500 bits
so i am trying to make my poi so that when she hits 1000 i will be ready
the problem is i am still making bits
so it's hard to decide how to spend you hour of free time
i am also trying to use little reader
but it's harder for me to keep organized Sad
do you use little reader to teach hunter?

the great thing about doing encyclopedic knowledge
is that you learn so much yourself
i went to school to be a teacher
taught for 5 years
and ran a school in Africa for 1 year
but i have learned so much more in the last year teaching muse
then all that other stuff put together
as much as i complain about how long it takes
it one of the best things there is
learning with your baby
what could be better  smile
247  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Encyclopedic Knowledge program-Domanmom need help on: September 22, 2008, 03:51:22 AM
i totally agree
i have five van goghs done
each one has taken me about 3 hours to complete
art seems to be way harder then the other categorize
you start to panic when you see the time it take to make one set
then you look at all the ones you still have to do
so if you have some poi's to post that would be a big help
i am doing most of the categorizes doman talks about it his book
plus tons more art animals poets and stuff like that

oh i all so have inventors done
and some other ones
how should i send the info?
248  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Early handedness? on: September 22, 2008, 03:38:56 AM
no if fact it's a great sign
you want to encourage her to use her right hand now that is has chosen a side
249  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Encyclopedic Knowledge program-Domanmom need help on: September 22, 2008, 03:28:56 AM
i do the same thing as domanmom
it just got to be to much trying to change the cards every day
i show 4 categories of 4 cards (i have a 23 month old and this is the most she will sit for)
she sees them 10 times then i switch them all
this is what works for me

i find it easy to make the cards i have made a thousand of them so far
it's the programs of intelligence that takes forever Sad
i think it would be great if everyone doing encyclopedic knowledge would post the categories they are making
so we could share info and save time
i am in the middle of researching programs of intelligence for 12 vincent van gogh paintngs if any one wants the info when i am finished let me know

good luck all   smile
250  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Share how your partners feel about BrillKids.com on: September 17, 2008, 11:25:43 PM

 smile
251  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Share how your partners feel about BrillKids.com on: September 17, 2008, 06:43:25 AM
my husband is way more it to it then i am LOL
he does more then half of the work of making downloads for me
come up with new cats
and looks up our points and downloads ten times a day
we are both doman suzuki anything early development freaks
so this has been tons of fun for both of us smile

252  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Craft on: September 16, 2008, 08:45:50 AM
muse loves crafts
at 11 months old my mom start telling me a should start coloring with her
i thought she was way to young but my mom would do it with her
she started coloring by herself at one year old
and by 15 months could hold a color correctly
so i started paint with her using poster paint and adult size paint brushes
at 18 months we start gluing colorful foam shapes on card stock
and make collages one of are favorite things to do
i go though old baby magazines with her and she picks out pictures she likes
then she takes stick glue and glues it herself on to a large paper
she makes really beautiful pieces
playdoh is a big hit too

all this art stuff has given her really good control of her hands and fingers
so next week when she turns two we will begin write exercises
253  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Know any Geniuses? on: September 15, 2008, 10:15:45 PM
karma to you domanmom
lots to say on this hot topic
but have a baby jumping on me LOL
254  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Anyone else teaching their child to play a musical instrument? on: September 14, 2008, 11:06:45 PM
in response to your question about teaching music Sapna
first off i don't play a instrument
nor have i had any formal music training
so don't let that intimidate you from having a great time teaching you son
in glenn doman's book how to give your baby encyclopedic knowledge
he talks about what the kids in his out program do by four years old

1 read two or more languages
2 speak two or more languages
3 play the violin well
4 do splendid gymnastics
5 do advanced math
6 write computer programs
7 swim and dive
8 know at least 4,000 bit of intelligence

these kids are taught all of these things completely by there mothers
none of the mothers knew how to play the violin, speak another language, do gymnastics or any of the other amazing things they were teach there kids
that is the wonderful thing about this program you learn with your baby
i know nothing about art or music when i started but i have learned so much just by teaching muse

back to doman
"All we do at the institutes is to give kids VISUAL, AUDITORY,and TACTILE stimulation with increased FREQUENCY, INTENSITY, and DURATION in recognition of the orderly way in which the brain grows.
thats all we do"

okay so here is what we do at our home

first i showed her all the musical instruments
this took about 2 or 3 months

at the same time we pick a composer of the week (sometimes weeks as she really loves Chopin and Mozart)
we play the cd every day
i tell her the name of the composer and show her a picture of him
after about 5 days she can recognize the music and tell me who the composer is

we play suzuki violin school 1 everyday
she really knows that music as well

we also play a lot of other music during the day
she sings along with patsy cline and her other favorites

we dance sing clap and march to the music
rhythm is so important so try to do a little claping and marching to the beat everyday
you can also use rhythm sticks or something similar to help you in this

play with drums keybords and other instruments teach that they can make different sound
and getting your child accustom to the instrument

go see music and then talk about it after
youtube is great for this as you can watch little kids playing instruments everyday

paint (a great time to play the composers) color, pour water, draw anything to develop the fine motor skills
needed to  begin to play

teach perfect pitch
domanmom posted a great link about how to do that so i won't get into it here
(i posted a download on composers and on music notes hopefully more on the way)

after all this you will need to find a music teacher but not to teach your son
but to teach yourself
suzuki recommends that the parent takes lessons for three months
bringing along the child but don't teach them yet
this way the child sees it as a very fun thing that mom gets to do and really wants to do it to
so when the child gets his own instrument he can't wait to play
he has been listening to the music on cd for months or years now
and play comes naturally
you go to all lessons with your child and practice with him at home everyday
that way it is a fun thing that mom and baby do together not abandoning him to some one he doesn't know
and then make him practice on this own which leads to boredom and wanting to abandon his lessons

you need a good teacher one who is happy working with you and your young child
you'll also need a real child size instrument
they make very small violins for two year olds to play for about $200 for a good one less for cheaper one
i don't know about other instruments look online
you also need time and patience and lots and lots of practice
it not going to happen over night
but with a lot of love and joyousness he will learn to love music and be well on his way to playing
and you may just pick up a instrument as well

remember your the Best person to teach your son anything
have fun smile
tatianna
