286  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Is she learning? on: May 22, 2009, 06:57:00 AM
Excellent questions, which I am hoping someone else can answer.

I feel I am in the same boat as you.  My dd is also 17 months and I started with Doman Red Dots in January and then moved to LM a few weeks ago.  I haven't followed any strict pattern to showing her the dots or the equations.  I have finished addition and subtraction and have also just reached the 90s in quantity.  I am unable to determine if she knows any math at all and I am very reluctant to test her.

Where do we go from here?

cp, Mind if I ask if you are teaching reading, and if so, where your dd is at with reading?
287  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: How do you schedule so many learning products on: May 20, 2009, 10:54:47 PM
...the pinnacle of being completely haphazard.

The sums up my scheduling smile  I began the Doman flashcards very very organized and as I have added YBCR and LR and LM it has become more and more difficult to stay organized.  I have all the material laying around in every room and then when my dd seems interested I show whatever material is available.  I simply do not know how many times I show a flashcard before I decide I should retire it, some words I might show twice and the next word fifty times.  About once a week (give or take a few days)  I round up all the flashcards and try to sort them out and bring out new cards.  Then of course LM and LR repeat some of my Doman flashcards, and so does the YBCR video.  However, in spite of it all, I have noticed that my dd can read some basic words and she seems to be adding about a word a day to her reading abilities, so obviously I am doing something right! <Thankfully>

I like the idea of writing out the educational goals.  That might help me focus more.
288  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Any Advice for a working mom to use Flash Card? on: May 18, 2009, 06:31:23 PM
I don't work at all and I also find it hard to do exactly what Doman suggests.  I just try to work in as many words/flashcards/DVDs in a day that is reasonable for that day. Sometimes I can do what Doman suggests, but lots of days I don't come anywhere near.  When I first started I tried to be really consistent, but as the months go on and on I become more and more disorganized!

In the past week dd (now 17 months old) has just started to read some of the words from YBCR such as 'wave', 'nose', and 'mouth'.  So, it seems that my dd is learning to read in spite of my disorganization.

I have said it before but I really like Doman's quote of "...reading is one game you will win to some degree no matter how badly you play it..."

289  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Any mom still uses real flashcard? on: May 14, 2009, 06:24:59 AM
I still use my homemade cards.  I don't laminate them, but they seem to be holding up o.k.  I find that dd gets bored of too much of the same thing.  So I alternate between as many different 'games' as I can from the YBCR DVDS to LR to LM to my homemade cards to my homemade books and whatever else I can find.
290  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: YBCR, how much? on: May 14, 2009, 04:20:03 AM
Skylark, I like to remind myself of Glen Doman's quote that teaching reading is a game you will win to some degree now matter how you play it.

I use YBCR cards and my own cards and little reader is almost no consistent order or combination.  I am seeing some results.  I would like to beleive I could be more organized but the reality is I use whatever is working or handy at the moment my daughter is interested.
291  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: baby names need help! on: May 13, 2009, 05:21:42 AM
Names are tough.  I found that after all we had picked, seeing the baby really made a difference to what we named our daughter.
The most unusual names I have heard for a boy are Hudson, Masey, and Trance.
Good Luck to your friend.
292  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Happiest Toddler on the Block on: May 13, 2009, 05:01:29 AM
I read the Happiest Baby on the Block and found it be very gentle yet effective.  The author had many great suggestions, and provided details on how to implement the suggestions.  If/when I reach the terrible 2 stage I would buy the Happiest Toddler on the block.  I have confidence in the author.
293  The BrillKids Forum / Forum Feedback + Questions / Re: 20% mother's day discount on: May 10, 2009, 01:44:11 AM
Currently downloading both LR and LM.  I had planned on using my points for a 25% discount of LM, but with the Mother's Day special, I am splurging for both.  Now I have all these points....perhaps I will save them up for the Little Music.

I am excited, can't wait for the downloads to finish!
294  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Library idea... on: May 07, 2009, 06:06:25 AM
afterall parents have to also study to be great parents!!

I LOVE this saying.  I had never really thought about it before, but that is very true for me.  I study hard to be a good parent.  Thanks for the quote!
295  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Confessions of a Doman mom on: May 07, 2009, 04:31:14 AM
1)  My math and reading program are not as consistent as I wish they were.

2)  I have almost given up on elimination communication - we just don't seem to be communicating anymore.

3)  I use breastfeeding as downtime to read many parenting books, most of which I do not have the time or motiviation to implement.

4) I retyped this post at least 5 times, dd kept turning off the computer!
296  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Success on: May 06, 2009, 10:59:58 PM
It is difficult to be a 100% sure, but I think my dd read the word 'wave' today.  I held up the card and she started moving her arms around about the same time I said wave.  So, maybe she read it, and then maybe she was just really fast to get her arms moving.  Nonetheless I am happy that all this work might actually be making progress.
297  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: YBCR while eating on: May 06, 2009, 10:51:41 PM
I show my dd the YBCR flashcards and sliding cards when she is in her highchair, just before or just after her meals.  The highchair is at least a time when she is less distracted by her surroundings.  I never thought to show her the DVD while she was eating - our T.V. is nowhere near our kitchen.
298  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: Left-Handed or Right-Handed Preference on: May 06, 2009, 10:41:45 PM
I would really like my child to be amidextoris.  I am very right handed and I would prefer to be able to do more with my left hand, just to give my right hand a break sometimes.
299  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Mirror, Mirror on the Wall on: May 06, 2009, 10:21:03 PM
Has anyone heard that a mirror can help with your child's speach development?

Has anyone noticed a difference after their child spends time in front of a mirror?
300  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: What's Mom's job worth? on: May 05, 2009, 05:30:15 AM
Canadian's Today's Parent had an article in the May issue on the same topic.  If I recall correctly, a Canadian Full Time Mom is worth $116,000 (Canadian).  If I'm worth so much, how come I frequently feel worthless?
