EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: For non-native speakers: using the foreign language in public

Good topic. I don't feel comfortable speaking Russian in public (we live in UK), but I keep pushing it against my will. One reason is that I like my girl to be very outgoing (and she already is) but she doesn’t see the difference yet between one language and another, so she mixes them. And when she does – other people or children don’t understand her and I think she feels confused why they are not engaging with her when she’s trying to engage with them. Also – when we are not tet-a-tet and other non-russian speakers are present I think it’s rude to speak the language they don’t understand. But if there is other Russian speaker present it feels perfectly fine to speak it in public, because we’re speaking between people who understand it. I know it might be silly, but that’s how I feel. I also can’t do OPOL as my partner doesn’t speak nor understands Russian, so if I speak Russian all the time to my daughter – this excludes him from the conversation completely, and that’s more than rude. I’m struggling a bit with what to do, but I hope it will work out somehow Completely agree with NPLight - people spring back from you when they hear you doing EL in public. My toddler (25months) loves shapes and cars and knows all major makes of cars and all (even difficult ones) geometric shapes, and loves spotting and reciting them, and their colors as we walk down the street and people look at me as if I was beating her up!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Teaching Art - Colors in different languages

Just found out that colors of the rainbow are different in Russian and English, so not sure what to teach my baby now. We live in UK, so she's most likely to use it in English, just wanted to know if anyone else discovered similar problems? Also - I have a set of color cards for EL with Russian names of the colors, and realized that these names are descriptive in each language and therefore don't literally translate. Where to find correct English names for colors with color sample? Visually it doesn't matter as long as my baby knows one shade from another but I just don't want someone tell her that she's wrong when she's acually correctly naming them from what she learned (if it makes any sense) Thanks for any suggestions and opinions!

My girl (24 months) has learned all basic shapes very quickly through a couple of videos we found on YouTube by TerrapinStation5 http://www.youtube.com/user/TerrapinStation5/videos (they have lots of interesting early Learning videos which my girls loves and learns from them very quickly): Baby Einstein - Discovering Shapes: http://youtu.be/1ws0daajV4wI wasn't too fond of Baby Einstein - Baby Newton: Discovering Shapes
http://www.youtube.com/v/Ifu1LoB8dUs&rel=1 with the song "I know my shapes" - as it shows 2D shapes being made into a drawing of a clown then this clown comes alive and shapes become 3D but they still call them by the names of 2D shapes like "triangle" instead of "piramid" which is being shown and "circle" instead of "sphere" which will confuse the child who's being introduced to 3D shapes I wonder if anyone knows any free videos or DVD's I can buy that cover other shapes (apart from basic: cirle, oval, square, rectangle, triangle, diamond (why everyone calls it diamond if geometrical name is rhombus, same with "star" shape - "star" is a very broad name, and what is shown is usually a pentagram)? sorry for the rant )) and 3D shapes? I'd pay for a DVD like that as it seems the only way we can learn anything now.. All I manage to find so far is people showing or drawing figures and naming them, it bores my baby and me immediately... Thank you :-)

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / No progress with dots cards...Please help

I have started Music, Reading (in 2 languages) and Math program with my girl when she was 22 months old. She is now almost 25 months, loves her "musical" and reading going beautifully, she remembers words (not all of them, but it's ok) in both languages and is very delighted to do "choosing" of correct word from 2 or 3 words given or shown to her (I don't do it often, they say not to test kids). She is mostly correct with words, sometimes she gets it wrong, but I just show her the correct word and praise her anyway. But with Math Dots - no matter how many times we play "choosing" game with same or different cards - she gets it wrong every time, and I can see she's just guessing or saying first thing that comes to mind. If we do quantity of presented objects (like orange segments) she can only identify up to 6 or 7 pieces, and then just says random numbers, mostly "six". She likes watching the cards though, especially on the potty or when she tells me to "hide" them (I hide the card behind my back or behind a wall then quickly reveal it to her shouting the amount of dots). I think part of the problem is that she's very interested in symbols for the numbers now, (I couldn't prevent this from happening, she's been at childminders and grandparents etc.) and she points at number’s symbols and names them all (mostly correctly) up to 10. She grabs dots cards when she can and turns them over to see the number symbols on the back and picks one or another number out of 2-digit number and names it…. What can I do? We're up to amount of 44 now, but I haven't started additions with cards yet, but I tried it with objects from 1-10. Shall I start from the beginning from dot 1 in a different language, although they say don’t show same cards again (she only knows symbols names in English), or shall I abandon hope with Doman Maths method altogether? Thank you!

Thank you Mela, I'll check out the link you gave me. I have downloaded the trial lessons of reading, math and music from BrillKids yesterday, but when I was installing them the only English version that was available was US. My little girl loves the lessons but I would like the UK pronunciation... Or could it be that I cannot install it in UK English because I have a trial version?
Thanks

Hi I am a trilingual mum of a 23-month old girl and only recently discovered all the Early Teaching programs (Doman etc) I am in UK, can anyone recommend DVDs/materials with English (UK) as it looks like only English (US) is available on this site. I would like my girl to memorize local pronunciation :-) Also - does anyone know of some Japanese teaching resources for a non-speaker. I would like my baby to learn this language and it's beautiful culture, but I will not be able to master the pronunciation myself :-(
Thanks Katja
