EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Tips for Introducing Music to 4 Month Old
|
on: December 17, 2013, 11:36:07 AM
|
Last weekend, we went to my dad's house and he played my 4 month old baby the guitar. She fixated on him while he played and she loved it when we ran her hands across the strings later. She would stick out her hand, I'd put it in place and let it fall across the strings. She could do that forever.
We love Little Musician, but I'm wondering if there are some things I can do off of the computer to help further develop this interest. We don't have any instruments in the home and the experience with my dad made me want to go out and buy her a guitar or a keyboard or something.
I'm thinking that maybe we will put her in a Music Together class in the new year. Any other tips or ideas? Thank you!

BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Sign up for our LR Spanish Beta Testing Program (LIMITED SLOTS ONLY!)

Chukwama, you haven't been too forthright at all.
I'm probably over thinking this. I've listened to Learn Spanish type CDs for Castillian before and it's not a big deal - the accent actually isn't that different, now that I think about it. The major difference is the /th/ sound for s and, like you said, a few words.
When they release the version to everyone, I'll let my husband decide what he wants to do. I'm sure that you are right, if he's sitting there with her, he can just correct her when needed.

There is a possibility that my disappointment was unfounded. Husband and I were bummed out and then remarked on how it just shows where the demand for BrillBaby is from. And I may be completely incorrect - I am a novice to Early Learning, but I am not comfortable with her being consistently exposed to a different accent. When it comes to Mandarin, French or ASL, it isn't that important to us which variation she uses or picks up. Spanish is going to be one of her major languages though, along with English. It is a big deal to my husband, born in Mexico, that she speaks it the same way he does. My husband takes a lot of pride in his ability to speak clear and proper Spanish and although there is nothing improper AT ALL about Castellano, it doesn't reflect her heritage correctly. I hope that makes sense, without offending. We have plans in place to continue her Spanish education without BrillBaby, but we def. would have purchased it, if it were latin. We probably still will and will mix it up (I'm glad to hear it is fun and visually appealing!) I would just feel horrible if I mixed up her accent when I know this is so important to my husband. She is only 3.5 months and I just feel like she is just soaking this stuff in.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Infant Tummy Time
|
on: December 05, 2013, 02:26:11 PM

I thought I'd follow up on this. Baby girl started getting upset with tummy time as she got older. I'm not sure if it's because she pushed off the crawling track and landed odd on an arm or because her GERD/reflux got worst and it was uncomfortable being on her tummy. It seemed to start as we began to do "crawling track" more. We didn't actually make a crawling track, but used a padded exercise mat. It may have been due to GERD, but we really had a set back in terms of tummy time and I think I caused it. The most important thing, I would stress, is to pick them up while they are still happy and not let them suffer it out. I know I picked her up from the crawling track several times after her fussing had turned to crying.
All I know is that as soon as we put her on her tummy, she would start crying tears and screaming immediately. It was horrible and really set us back. I called the nice people at IAHP to ask for advice and they recommended that I forget about the crawling track for now and put her down for short short periods of time. Just put her down, pick her up before she gets upset and then do something really fun with her.
Well, as a baby baby, we didn't have anything fun enough to take away the trauma of 10 seconds of tummy time. But, she liked her infant stim cards. So, we put her down 2-5 seconds, picked her up before she even realized what had happened and showed her her infant stim cards. Then as she started to like toys, we had even more things to reward her with. We did the 2-5 second tummy time maybe 20x a day when she was in a happy alert mood and after eating. We also held her up in the prone'ish type position and played with her down there to get her used to the position in a positive light, without the effort involved. We slowly increased her 2-5 seconds and we are now at 2-5 minutes. I actually started showing her brill baby down there (now that she likes it) and it really distracts her. I'm a little concerned that she will pick up less, but once she shows any sign that she is getting disinterested or may begin to fuss, I exit out of BB.
Anyways that is my long update. I do put her on the wedge/pillow when we watch BB or play with toys and continue to put her on the exercise ball tummy down and on my leg.
We haven't tried the crawling track again and I think she would get upset if we did, so we'll have to wait a bit longer.
Thanks BB Community!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Signing Time is now on Netflix!
|

Baby girl is maxed out on screen time (only 3.5 months), but I want to learn some of these songs myself and sing them to her. It is a really great series. I've been thinking of getting rid of netflix, if they got more educational material, it would be worth it though.
I imagine baby sign time is a bit more functional? I watched a video on youtube, and it looked like she only used one sign during the entire song. Is this typical? I like how most of the song is signing on signing times. I would love to teach her signs through song, just like we learn the movements to the itsy bitsy spider or other kids songs.
Inspired.

Congratulations on making it to the Beta Testing stage. That is very exciting! We were looking forward to this version, but were disappointed to see Castellano. If you ever do a spanish version for those of us in the United States, my husband/daughter will be excellent beta testers.
Good thing you can customize little reader. I think that will be a task my hubby will enjoy doing for the girl. At 3 months of age, we still have some time before we have to get our act together.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: How much time a day spend learning?

I'm following this thread.
Our baby girl is only 3 months. I hope doing these programs is the right call. She is finally interested and will actually smile at the computer screen. I would hate to hurt her eyes or have her be too obsessed with the computer.
Right now, it is however long it takes to do little reader english, chinese, little math little musician. We don't do it all at once, but every 3 hours will watch another one. The little girl has bad reflux and has to be up for 20-30 minutes after eating. I do the computer at this time or reading.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Organizing Physical Materials - What does your workspace look like?

Thanks Chukwama, we'll have to get some designated boxes/containers.
Baby girl just isn't as interested in LM or LR as she is in the cards When I do get her to look at it, it's not the same wide eyed excited look we get with the flash cards. She also ignores my praise with the screen, when we do get her to look at it - usually LM. When we do the paper cards, she's as excited about the praise as she is the card. She kicks her little legs and it is fun for both of us. We'll try LM and LR again in a few weeks.

Alright my little girl is almost 10 weeks old. I have flash cards, toys and books all over my house.
I know I need some kind of physical organization. I'm curious how you do yours. I'm thinking of changing her "room" (where she doesn't even sleep yet) into a classroom type environment.
How do you keep your flash cards, if you do Doman? Right now I have them stuck with magnets to a white board. It's not a good long term solution though. Do you have a binder with check off list? I'd love to see your solutions.
