31  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Would you prefer teaching British English than US English? on: May 29, 2009, 10:55:19 PM
I find British English (BE) is spoken clearer and therefore much easier to understand if you learn it as a foreign language, at least for me. But maybe that's because I went to school in Germany and here they teach Britsh English only.

However, I'd like to teach both AE and BE (later on, because I have not done anything in this direction), thus my daughter would be able to understand AE easier than I do now smile . And it is easier to find AE stuffs on internet/movies etc.

To sum up, a YES for BE from my side.
32  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Teaching languages - E-mail from Doman's Institute on: May 27, 2009, 11:19:56 AM
Thank you so much for sharing this information. It clears my doubts.

Did the Doman's Institute reply for e-mails fast?

By the way, I  want to teach my daughter German, too   smile.

33  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Library - all links on: May 24, 2009, 03:01:55 PM
I try not to repost sites that have already been posted, so if this is one I apologize.

So I do. One way to find out whether it has been posted yet is using the search function and searching for the website, e.g. "www.learningplanet.com" at this forum before posting  yes.
34  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Is she learning? on: May 24, 2009, 12:47:44 PM

Hi CP,

my daughter tend to have the same "problem". What we did is to sort out the pictures she likes tooo much (and keeps saying it in a session).

Maybe you are right.  It just that I’m worried DD is not learning what she is supposed to as she seems to be interested in the icons only and keeps saying “Baby”, “Bear” etc when I show her LR.  Perhaps I worry too much.  Thanks for your advice.  I’ll continue doing whatever I’m doing.
35  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Any Experiences with EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) techniques? on: May 24, 2009, 01:33:47 AM
Hi all,

I came across with EFT last week.

http://emofree.com/
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is an emotional, needle free version of acupuncture that is based on new discoveries regarding the connection between your body's subtle energies, your emotions, and your health. EFT has been reported successful in thousands of cases covering a huge range of emotional, health and performance issues. It often works where nothing else will.

It is a very simple techniques that would solve allmost every small to serious physical and mental problems. In their free manual it is said that you can also apply these techniques to children to cure e.g. fear for potty stool, darkness, anger or whatever.

Does anyboy have experience with EFT esp.? Does it really function? And how do you apply it to a litte child? I mean a child isn't still and let you tab them for a minute.

I didn't try it for myself but want definitely do it. I will let you know then if I see some results.
36  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Library - all links on: May 18, 2009, 12:47:42 PM
Thank you so much!

That is exactly what I wanted to do (searching for all links at Brillkids). I have asked for a bookmarking function at the forum.  See

http://forum.brillkids.com/forum-feedback-plus-suggestions/bookmarking-function-for-good-websites/

They will do it but no clue when. Maybe until then we should update your list frequently.
37  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Teaching math - languages dilemma! on: May 16, 2009, 10:13:59 PM
I learned French at school (but have forgotton it) and learned the French numeral systems the same way I learned my native language, too. I mean I learned that   90 is 20 times 4 plus 10 and 91 is 20times 4 plus 11 - as mamaDoudou said -  but actually I memorized the 1 word itself rather than the mathematical operation behind the number smile.

In Vietnamese 43 is four tens three (or shorter four-four). I find in English it's the same (at least for me): fourTY four.

Well, about German numbers... German is second - almost - native languages, too. I went to German school from grade 2 on. But I still find the German numbers terrible. I often get confused about German numbers. When they say 25 (5 and 20 in German) I need to rethink if they mean 25 or 52. There was a funny story about that number. I asked a hotel for my friend and they told me that the room would costs 52 EUR but I "understood" 25 EUR on the telefon. Fortunately, my friend stayed there only for one night!

More over, the German numbers are long to speak 25 is "fuenfundzwanig". Vietnamese in comparison: hai nam or English twenty-two is still shorter. I think speed is important when you do math. I have a Chinese friend. She told me one reason she do math in Chinese is because the German numbers a too long to speak (or think it out).

However, for me numbers are numbers. When I do math I see the numbers as the mathematic language itself and not German, not Vietnamese etc. But my experiences are limited since I am only familiar with 10base systems.
38  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: Right Brain V.S. Left Brain Test on: May 14, 2009, 05:29:49 AM
Thank you for the interesting link!

Sometimes I were really thinking of if I would be left or right brain...but could not find it out.

Now the facts: I saw her spinning counter-clockwise first, but while reading the text beside I saw her spinning clockwise   smile

40  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Teaching EK to bilingual kids on: May 10, 2009, 06:17:59 AM
I did ask texaslady22 (taught her son >2000 POI in English and >500 in Spanish). Her method is teaching the same information twice. She say a fact in English and then say it in the second language later on.

I think that you could let a greater distance (more than  week) between the 2 languages, so the second time could be also like a repeatation for your daughter !?
41  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Encyclopedic Knowledge files uploaded on: May 10, 2009, 06:10:38 AM
tons of karma to you!

Please could you also write the facts down here in the forum or in at Powerpoint file (especially for not English native speaker like me). Thus you would also get more points for your really great work.
42  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Languages that have masculine and feminine (and neutral) versions of words? on: May 02, 2009, 08:42:27 PM
thanks a lot. I'll teach with article then.

Does anyone has experience of teaching declension of verbs (I am, you are,...)? In German there is also a declension of adjectives.

German is so difficult to teach..hic hic.

Hello,

my daughter loves that video.
I'd like to know where and if I can get more videos of that series?

45  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Languages that have masculine and feminine (and neutral) versions of words? on: April 30, 2009, 09:54:06 PM
Hi all,

I am not sure how to teach German. German nouns are either masculine (der), femine (die) or neutral (das). It's a lit like in French where the nouns are masculine (le) or femine (la).

Shall I teach the words der/die/das with the nouns (e.g. der Kindergarten)or only the nouns itself (e.g. Kindergarten)?

Thanks for any input.
