Hi,
Thank you for your answers! I always thought, I do too less reading. I don't know, who posted it these days, I think DadDude does about 3 hours reading / teaching a day. That's really amazing! But I'm also a working mom, so I don't have more time. Often I also don't do the 40 min. of reading, but I try to read as lot as I can.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / How many minutes/hours a day?

Hi everybody,
Since a few days I always write down, how much I read to my daughter. I noticed, that I read less, than I thought, only 40 minutes a day, but that is 4-5 books... And then we do LR, about 15 minutes a day. I think, that's ok. She likes it very much.
How much do you do daily?

Hi,
Thank you so much for your answers! I've tried to make books, but she can only read "sentences" with no more then 2 words. If I put 3 words on a page (and I know, she can easily read every one of them), she is just blocked and doesn't know, how to read them...
Have you had similar experiences? Maybe it is too early to start with books?

Hi,
I'm showing my flashcards to my little daugther now since about 5 weeks. She already learned to read 85 words!! I always take out the words, she can read and replace them with new ones.
BUT: Unfortunately she forgets many of the old words, altough we often play with them, so she can see them again. But I can not show her every word (over 80) every day and also the new ones! She also wouldn't have patience for this.
How do you do that? And I think, it gets even more obvious, when she once knew about a few hundred words (will she forget half of it or more?).

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / How to be physically superb - start at 2 yo??

Hi, I have the above mentioned book on my shelf since my daughter was 15 months old. First, when I read it, I didn't really understand, which exercises to do first, etc??? I mean, the structure of the book is a bit complicated (for me ) Now I read so many times, that physical fitness is so important to intelligence, that I would like to start again with the book. But maybe my daughter is too old already? And where should I begin? Can anyone give me a recommandation please?? Thank you sooo much for your help!

BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / Re: Skipping a grade...your thoughts experiences please...??

Hi there!
I skipped a grade, when I was a child. My mother thought me to read and write before school, so it was really easy for me the first few years. When I finished second grade, I made a test and could skip into the 4. grade. For me it was a desaster! Really... unfortunately.
I always was smaller and shyer than my classmates, but along the first two years I managed to have a few really good friends at school. For me skipping a grade brought nothing but much pain. The other children were not only one year older then me, but also more mature and a loooot bigger. I had difficulties to find friends.
Later on we moved to an other county and because I didn't know the language, I did the 6. schoolyear twice. So in the end I didn't "win" anything.
A more positive example: my sister also skipped a class, she went from 1. grade directy in 3. For her it was ok.

Thank you for your very helpful answers!
TracyR4: That's a great idea, I think I will also do it this way. Just retire the cards, she already knows. It is always hard for me to choose, which cards to retire...
TeachingMyToddlers: Super link, thank you so much!

I'm using LR, I did the whole 12-month-curriculum with my baby, but she didn't gave me a sign, she could read. Two weeks ago I showed her flashcards (just different words from different categories, random) and finally she read a few words. So now I'm motivated to make more flashcards. My cards have a picture on the back, and I always show her the picture also.
Hm... I think, it is a Doman program, when I show her the cards 3 times daily and add in new cards / retire old ones?
I just don't know, if I should wait, until she reads out all the cards.
Today I showed her the card "boy" for the first time and she just picked it up immediatly. Next time, I showed her, she just said "boy" without even seeing the picture.

Hi, My daughter used to love, when I was reading books to her. But for the last 2-3 weeks, she wants to look at the pages by herself, and doesn't listen, when I read to her... We used to read a lot, even 1.5 hours a day. But now, she brings a book for herself, and gives me another one to read I don't know, is this just a phase? What should I do?

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Question conc. Flashcards
|
on: March 09, 2011, 06:58:04 AM

Hi everybody, Since about 2 weeks my little daughter likes to watch flashcards and remembers also a few (maybe 7-8) out of 21. I introduced these 21 cards rather slowly and show them now always in 2 parts - sometimes 2. part just after 1. part, if she wants to. Now I've printed about 15 more cards and don't know, how to introduce them. Should I always take away 3-4 cards and add in 3-4 new ones? I think, if I remove "old" cards, she won't learn the words on them (or should I add them in again later?) Should I just move on, when she knows all her words? Please advice! Thank you!!!

We used only a few times printed flashcards (and now regularly started a week ago with bigger red fonts) and LR. I also read a lot to her, and moved my finger under the lines, but I think, she never looked at the letters

Thank you so much for your answers! Oh, yes, it was a bit hard to keep it up for 1 year. Mainly because I read in the forum and everybody seemed to see results after a few months. So then I just thought, maybe my daugther couldn't learn to read by sight. I planned to teach her phonics reading , when she turns 2.5.
But now I'm really happy with this result and she likes the flashcards a lot!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / WOW - soooo happy!!!

Hi everybody, My daughter read her first words today morning!!!!! I'm sooo happy about that, that it works, I have almost thought, it just doesn't work for her.... I began teaching my little daugther, when she was 11 months old, we did the whole 12-month curriculum (I translated it in our language). Sometimes I showed her also hand mady flashcards or put cards on the wall, for instance "clock" besides our clock at the wall, etc. But she didn't seem much interested in it, so I stopped these cards. But I didn't stop with the LR. Since we finished the curriculum, I make presentations for her and she enjoys them really. I thought, it is not such a big problem, if she doen't learn to read, because she learns vocabulary and a lot of other things in the presentations. Then, about a week ago, I tried again with hand made (printed) flashcards. I printed the words in big red letters and showed her the cards 3 times daily for one week. Today I showed her again, like every morning, and noticed, that she just said the words, BEFORE I said them. Wow, I was sooo happy! Finally! By the way: she is now almost 24 months old, so I show her this different words since 1 year and today was the first time, I really saw the evidence, that it works!!! So: don't give up, if you don't see immediate results. They will come!

Hi Mom2bee,
Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, I'm really motivated and exited to start to teach her german!! I'm just afraid, that she will lose a bit of hungarian. Because every hour, I speak german with her or exercise, I speak 1 hour less hugarian... But probably you are right, I shouldn't worry too much, just enjoy!
Why do you think, so many people don't speak hungarian here so good after a few years? For instance, I know a man, who lives here since 20 years, he came with 23 years to Germany and speaks german since then with his wife. They have now a little son and he says, he doesn't want to speak hungarian with him, because his hungarian isn't so good anymore. And he spoke the first 23 years of his life just hungarian!
