31  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Simplified Chinese versus Traditional Chinese on: June 25, 2010, 05:41:32 PM
It depends. If you want to read books from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau is better learning traditional characters, although many people there use simplified characters too. If instead of that, you only want to read books from Mainland China or Singapore (or you are going to visit those countries) I would study simplified characters.

For several reasons I´m going to teach my son only simplified characters, although I must admit that traditional characters are better because they give us more clues about the meaning and the origin of the words.

And always is easier passing from traditional to simplified instead of viceversa

Anybody more have the same problem as NadieD and me?  confused
33  The BrillKids Forum / BrillKids Announcements / Re: BrillKids Discount Coupons - Coming Soon! on: June 24, 2010, 11:52:37 AM
Hi everyone!

To clarify a few things, this is the way it will be set up:

1. The discount coupons (although not finalized yet) will span several discount tiers for several products.

Examples: (the discount tiers can go all the way up to full 100%)
10% discount for Little Reader = xx points
25% discount for Little Reader = xx points
10% discount for Little Math = xx points
25% discount for Little Math = xx points

2. You will only have access to these coupons if you have the sufficient amount of post counts. You will need a minimum of the following:

At least 100 posts made anywhere in the BrillKids Forum
                                AND
At least 50 posts made anywhere in the ParentWeb Forum

3. As previously announced when we launched ParentWeb, happy you may sign in to ParentWeb using your BrillKids account. You don't need to make another account to register for ParentWeb if you already have a BrillKids account.

4. The difference between the BrillKids and ParentWeb community lies in the scope of the website:
The BrillKids community's focus is on early childhood education, teaching babies and young children. big grin
The ParentWeb community is for discussions pertaining to parenting in general. yes

5. The post counts you make in ParentWeb - you have to go to http://forum.parentweb.com/ to make them - are counted separately from the post counts you make in BrillKids.

6. New posts made in the pregnancy and parenting boards will be counted as posts for ParentWeb, only if you make them on the ParentWeb forum site - you HAVE TO BE in http://forum.parentweb.com/ when you make them. Otherwise, they will be counted as BrillKids posts.

7. The posts you make on either forum will both add to your points, which is why you only need one account. smile

And that's it! I hope that made things clearer - so beyond this, I guess the last thing you need to do is HAVE FUN!

I have posted several times in ParentWeb through http://forum.parentweb.com/, but all my posts have been counted as Brillkids ones
My account is the same for both forums but till today i hadn't post in ParentWeb. Which is the problem and how can I solve it?

Thanks
34  The ParentWeb Forum / Feedback + Suggestions / Re: Topics in Spanish on: June 24, 2010, 11:40:22 AM
I´ve seen that at Brillkids Forum exists a Foreign Language Boards Discussions.

I suppose that administrators could create something similar to post in other languages like spanish. I don´t write down in english as well as I desired, so it would be helpful for me to be able to comunicate faster with other members who speak spanish.

36  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: HAPPY FATHER'S DAY! on: June 24, 2010, 11:19:24 AM
Thanks a lot !! And sorry for the delay but i hadn´t found this other forum  smile

So in Spain mothers and fathers have two days to celebrate. International Father's and Mother's Day, and local Father's and Mother's Day Wink

Here Father's Day is on March 19th (Saint Joseph's Day) and Mother's Day coincides with the first Sunday on May.
37  Parents' Lounge / Introduce Yourself / Re: Hello everyone i am a peruvian grandma on: June 24, 2010, 11:11:21 AM
Hi 2010BEBES!

I´ve read some posts from you at brillkids. I didn´t know that you were from Peru smile ¿Where do you live?

I´m spanish but my wife is peruvian like you. She is from Chiclayo and now is visiting her family with our son. I miss them a lot .

Nice to meet you

39  Local Support Groups / Foreign Language Boards Discussions / Re: Native SPANISH speaker? Need your help with Spanish curriculum please! on: June 24, 2010, 09:53:12 AM
Hi KL

I´m spanish native speaker, born and living in Spain. If you want i can offer my help with spanish curriculum, specially with the differences between Latin American spanish and the spanish from Spain (words and phonics)

I am Degree in Law at ULPGC University and have some experience teaching spanish to foreign people.

Greetings
40  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Teaching a language you don't know on: June 24, 2010, 09:22:38 AM
I forgot to comment something important. Till now in Spain we only had the opportunity to watch films and TV series dubbed in spanish (at all the TVs and also at cinemas). In other european countries as in Latin American ones, films from United States or United Kingdom are shown in original version with subtitles.

Most children from Spain have a poor ability to distinguish sounds in english because they start to study it very late. However in Western Europe or South america children haven´t got such problem because they have been hearing and listening that sounds since they were babies.

It's impossible to LEARN any language just watching TV/movies/cartoons etc:)smile
A language is not just listening or learning words or even saying words! It's an endless process of cognition, communication, using  different sets of words/phrases in different situations. But don't think that having learned several hundreds in early childhood and not using them during some years you'll be able to speak this language.
BUT if you mean just knowing some tens of phrases and understanding easy words it's possible to learn them. But you should help your child anyway so - you should know what do you teach him/her:)smile

If we only use multimedia materials, perhaps children will not learn to speak a non mother tongue language. I agree that is better if parents learn that foreign language before because I think that interacting with our kids is esential.

Anyway i don´t mind if my son learns to speak a foreign language with 3 years instead of with 15, 20 or even with 50 years hahaha. The really important thing is giving a way to stimulate his neural conections, because I´m pretty sure that what he learns through right part of the brain, will be useful in the future helping him in comparison with other children without that stimulation.

And as Doman said, is better learn only one word than learning nothing.
42  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Children's Songs Geography Countries A-Z Around the World on: June 23, 2010, 01:32:53 PM
Great link. It'll help me a lot to find kids songs in other languages with their translation. Karma for you  smile

43  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Teaching a language you don't know on: June 23, 2010, 01:18:19 PM
Hypatia is also right about kids who learn languages watching TV. I personally know romanian people who has learnt spanish in this way. Perhaps the difference is between what is learning a "mother tongue" and, on the other hand, learning a "non mother tongue", where may be different parts of the brain involved.

I acknowledge that now i´m a little bit confused with this issue.  confused
44  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Teaching a language you don't know on: June 23, 2010, 07:29:40 AM
I totally agree with you Anastasiya. If we don´t speak a language is impossible teaching it to a baby / toddler by ourselves, in the same way they learn our mother tongue.

However, I think that we cannot underestimate the right brain importance. Reading Makoto Shichida's theories, when a little baby has been previously exposed to images (words) and sounds (perfect pitch) of a foreign language, his ability to learn it will be extraordinarily boosted. So when children grow up, they will be helped a lot if it they finally follow studying that language at school (or with a personal teacher)
45  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Website: Children's Stories in different languages on: June 17, 2010, 03:28:50 PM
It´s just what I was looking for!

Thanks a lot and of course karma for you too smile
