Hi, Nisarg is 2.5 months old. What I have done to encourage his development is: - Lots of body contact - carrying around, cuddling, baby wearing...
- Talking to him
- Music, singing, humming...
- Using sign language with him - for example, signing milk while feeding
- Infant stimulation cards
- Flash cards - words and dots
- Breast feeding
- Balance related stuff - holding vertical, horizontal, tummy down horizontal, swaying, swinging (with careful neck support)
- Tummy time
- Deep listening - my own communication method based on my experience with behavioural science. I have described it to some extent over here
So far, I have seen great "results". At 2.5 months: - Nisarg and I can communicate when he wants to pee most of the time. It is quite common for us to have a full day without wetting a single diaper.
- He seems to be signing milk, early as it seems
- He is able to recognize family members and smile when he sees them
- He lifts hands slightly when he would like to be picked up
- He has pretty good head control - holds his head steady when held upright, lifts it for minutes at a time when lying on his tummy and briefly when lying on his back
- He sits for brief periods with support
- He can let me know when he doesn't like something by looking directly at me and frowning, rather than crying
- Crawls about a foot or so easily - about 5ft is the max so far
- Climbs his father (and me, sometimes) with minimal assistance - mostly neck support
- Uses the tone of his "coos" to communicate moods - particularly with eye contact, when he wants me to notice (or so I imagine, but it works)
Seems pretty good for his age. I enjoy doing all this. Pretty much nothing is too sacred for us to touch. We do what whim hits us, as long as we are careful with the more "extreme stuff" (swinging, climbing father, etc). Some of this may seem pretty strange for his age. I would like to believe that it is a direct result of the communication stuff I do with him (the deep listening thing I wrote about). I don't think I'm imagining things. We can do this pretty reliably.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / 2.5 month old signing milk?

Hi, I feel certain Nisarga is signing milk. However, everything I have read on this subject says that babies don't start signing till 6 months or so. Am I imagining things? Tried to make a video, but he stops doing it, and turns to me and makes sucking sounds instead.... So far, he has done it three times for sure, and once I wasn't sure. Described it on my blog too in more detail - http://www.nisargak.com/proud-mama/two-month-old-signing-milk/Has anyone's baby signed early too or am I just seeing what I'd like to see? Vidyut

Thanks.
Will karma/points help me afford the softwares? I'm new (and broke).
Sound in XP can be buggy and needs some troubleshooting sometimes to get the virtual setup right. I repeat - DON'T install your trials till you have sound and video working right, or you will end up wasting time from your free trial.
But if you are convinced and want to buy, this IS a solution and once configured right, will do absolutely everything a windows machine can - it is a complete windows install inside the Ubuntu. Just to show you how it works, here's a screenshot attached. I'm running on Ubuntu, this page I'm posting on is in the background on Google Chrome (unstable), and little reader is open in Windows XP SP2 on my VM in the foreground (you can see the windows desktop too).
This also means that you will need a licensed Windows and LM/LR beyond trial period.
(Time is at a premium these days with a 2 month old, but if you like, I can write a tutorial of sorts when I'm able - though most linux/ubuntu users are quite hacking friendly through sheer necessity)

Okay, I'd wanted to use Little Reader and Little Math for my little one. Thing is, I use Ubuntu. I have a dual boot, but its really painful to stop everything I'm doing, shutdown and reboot when I spot Nisarg awake and cheerful. By the time I'm done with that, its likely that he's back asleep, or hungry, or needs a change, or whatever. Solution is QEMU. You basically create an image file and run a virtual machine on it. So I'm working on my ubuntu, and I have a window with a windows install in it. Now this is a proper windows install, which you install like a new machine (and it reboots and all within the window), so anything you can do on windows, you can do on this It is a bit slow at times, particularly downloads..... but LR and LM run fine, which is pretty much all I use it for, so all is well in the world. I wouls say install first, check that every thing (particularly sound) works before installing LR/LM trials, or you will end up wasting trial time

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Let's brag about our babies!!

Well... I don't know about reading, but I sure can brag. My almost 3 month old is willing to listen and see stuff I show him. Irrelevant, but just because I want to do an outstanding brag..... We haven't wet a single nappy since yesterday. He yells the house down when he wants to go, and I strip him and hold him over the wash basin for a pee and we wear the same dry one again So I guess he understands "shhhhh" NOT BAD for a newbie mom and tiny baby. Uh... he's willing to do this round the clock, but I put disposables on him at night for my beauty sleep. He's okay with peeing into them if he whimpers and I don't respond.
