EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Low Expectations?

My daughter is not SN but in my personal opinion I think that no matter what the SN is that a child or person can do absolutely anything they want, no matter what it is. They may have a harder time at certain things but if they want to do it and they put their mind to it they can accomplish it. Especially with the right support. I think it is wrong that your child was judged without an unbiased assessment. It happens a lot whether a child is SN esp. in the US (don't get me started on that but people from the US on here should watch Waiting for Superman and see what is going on in our education system, and it isn't only in Public Schools, I went to a Private Catholic School as a child and they did not do a good job, I had some bad teachers who were not teaching for the children) Anyway that is off topic, I am just writing because I believe that SN or not your child can do anything and to never give up hope on them or let anyone else devalue them. I feel sad that, that happened to you and your child. I may sound ridiculous because I don't have a SN child so I don't necessarily know what I am talking about I just don't believe in limiting our children, and they shouldn't learn to limit themselves in the sense of growth and knowledge and experiences. So your school shouldn't limit your child especially without any reason except for a diagnosis. An unbiased assessment of what your child is capable of like everyother typical child is what should have been done instead of just assuming that a certain label means your child is less than another. Which is how I would feel and results in me being very angry over the whole situation. It was very wrong of them.

Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: Any tips for regaining your beautiful pre-pregnancy figure?
|
on: June 02, 2011, 02:00:23 AM
|
My daughter is almost two and I still don't fit in my pre pregnancy clothes. It is my own fault because I am so busy with her, I was busy with school and everytime I try to exercise my darling daughter would interupt. I couldn't and can't afford and I do not have the time or resources (baby sitter) to go to the gym or anything like that. I also suffered with a lot of depression over the weight and my financial and overall situation at the time. I get really depressed over not fitting in my clothes and I refuse to buy new clothes so I am still wearing pregnancy clothes or sweats and things that are baggy or stretch. The depression then makes me not want to work out because I just want to hide from myself, and it is never good. So I have stopped trying to fit into my pre-pregnancy clothes. It is really hard to buy new clothes because I do not like "fat clothes" (I have my share of body issues I am and have been trying to deal with) so I wear what I have that fits and try to get some new bigger things. My goal is to lose weight, I am currently dieting and exercising and increasing my water intake. Trying to cut out all sugary liquid, trying to just drink water. I have lost a little weight, 27 pounds I had gained about 35-40 with my pregnancy. Also eating early like a couple hours before bed. It is very hard because being a mother we juggle so much. We also feel guilty about everything we do. Try not to be hard on yourself and stop comparing yourself to other people. Focus on yourself and being happy with yourself and working towards your goal. Some people drop the weight really easy others don't. Just take time out for yourself and don't be discouraged and most importantly be healthy about it. Another thing is breast feeding didn't help me lose weight because I was so stressed that I wasn't making enough milk because I didn't know if I was and I was pumping and going to school and it was very chaotic that I would eat more to try to make more milk. Also I really tried to workout after the baby as soon as I was allowed but my body felt so weak I couldn't do and still cant do some of the things I used to, it is getting better now that I am trying more. I was very discouraged because I was used to working out like a beast. So another tip is try doing things that are easy. Everyone worrys about their stomach after having a baby, try to focus on your legs and arms and do a little ab exercises at time till you gain your strength back. When I started not being so hard on myself is when I started seeing results so now it is just keeping up with it and hopefully lose a little more. Hope this helps.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Reading the same books over and over again??
|

My daughter is 21 going on to 22 months old and she has a lot of books some of them are mine from when I was little and a lot of them were given to her by me her father or other family members. I do not know the exact number but I can say it is a lot, my mother says she can open up her own library. Although my daughter has all these books she does tend to pick the new ones and read them or ask me to read them over and over and over again, she does have her favorites though whether they are new or old. She picks a new favorite every few months or so, for example a couple of months ago it used to be The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and now it is Princess Baby Night-Night by Karen Katz. Sometimes it gets frustrating to hear and read the same story over and over again. LOL But I think it is normal that they tend to be attracted to the new objects because they are new and children like to explore so new things means new explorations. However, in my experience my daughter loves all her books old or new even though she shows a little extra attention to the new ones when the first come home. It usually lasts a week or two. I hope this helps you out. In addition I don't think it really matters how many books you have. I am not sure where you are located and I know you are having a little trouble getting books in your native language but there is always libraries and there are websites (I am not sure of the exact website but you can search them online) that you can swap books, and maybe you can find places to purchase books in you native language over the internet as well, or even make your own using the computer or just writing it out and pasting pictures on paper. There are a number of alternatives, again I hope this helps you.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Preschool Prep or YCCR?
|

Keep in mind I am writing with a little terror throwing books and toys onto my lap,so I am going to try to write my opinions of the products quickly. I used YBCR with my daughter and she loved it... we also have YCCR and Preschool Prep and Little Reader.
My daughter doesn't seem to really love PP, she will watch it sometimes and she def. likes the sight words better then colors and numbers. The video is all animation and very repetitive. YBCR was not as repetive and my daughter learned a lot these dvds are a little annoying after a while( like they keep saying of of of of of of of of of of of....OF). Its great but sometimes (i don't know if it is just me, but its like enough!) I like them but if I had the choice again I wouldn't get them. Since my daughter doesn't really show much attention to them, to me they ended up being a waste. I was really excited to get this product too but ultimately was disappointed. My daughter really likes the part at the end of the Sight Words DVDs where the children read short simple sentences and they show the words, but there isn't enough of that in the dvds.
YCCR is much better for my daughter. She is much more engaged in it. I was very nervous that this product wasn't going to be good but it is very good. We have only used the first 2 dvds so far but my daughter loves them they show lots of words and phonetic chunking. It also shows great ways to teach your child if you don't want to use the screen. Like you can use magnetic letters and rubber stamps, and paint, sand, soup, fabric letters ect.. to teach them during play time.
Little Reader is another my daughter loves, and you can customize it, it is a great buy because you can add your own things to it and you can dowload what other parents have made for their children along with introdcuing foreign language.

Hey
So, my daughter got the YCCR DVDs and 6 mini sliding books and the YCCL books all of the same books in the YCCD set. I am very interested in the DVDS but I was very unhappy with the shape book. To me all the shapes in the book were weird looking. Not traditional petagon or octogon ect. If anyone can tell me if this is normal...I am going to be looking into the dvds on toys r us to see if I can get them without the books.

Read the first post...that is scary but I wouldn't pay it could also be a scam. Either way I dont think they are going to come after you. What company is going to tell you dont bother trying to dispute this just send over you hard earned money...sorry sounds like a scam. There are a lot of those that go around if you download off the internet or even sell products on ebay.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Screen Free Early Learning

Flash cards, and Hooked on Phonics CDs I believe there are some and they teach the alphabet and their soundt. Flash Cards Handmade/ Computer made she can teach the alaphabet by teaching the phonetic sound, and then put the sounds together on another flash card and teach reading that way. It may be a lot of work but it is one way to teach reading without the whole word and screen. Doman Math Cards for math I believe you can get them at gentlerevolution.com, I am not positive though if you can't find helpful stuff there then she can always come on here and download powerpoint presentations of Doman Math and print out the slides and teach them like that flash card method or hand make em. Hope this helps.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: YBCR Bad press and law suit, what is up? what do you think??
|
on: April 15, 2011, 03:40:37 PM

Wow, this aggravates me so much, because people already think I am crazy to be teaching my baby and now these idiots "prove" that YBCR is a "scam"! Okay so My mother was on the phone bragging to her sister about my daughter's "incredible intelligence". My aunt, her sister said that YBCR was undergoing a lawsuit that it is a scam. I said to my mother that it does not teach your baby to read. You do not watch those 5 DVDs and know how to read. It is a tool that you may use to help teach your child and give them a head start. I have had YBCR from time my daughter turned two months. If I didn't put in work with her. Sit show her cards, sit with her while she watched the videos. Read to her, go out of my way to educate her she would most likely not be as smart as she is today. YBCR along with numerous programs including LR and LM ect. Have all helped me teach my daughter. She has a larger vocabulary then children who are older then her. I go to the store and find it odd that 3 year olds hardly talk or aren't as vocal as my daughter. I take it for granted that my daughter is advanced I think all children are like this and then I see other children not doing what my daughter does. YBCR along with all the other programs I have used are short the most I will say is 30 minutes. How will 30 minutes of television a day turn your child into a television addict. Why are we trying to stop our children from becoming smarter then we are? Do we see the young people out here today. I live in NY and I see teenagers that do not know their zip code, kids 5 and 6 year olds that ask their parents what (in) means on a sign on the train. My mother wishes she has this for her children (me and my sister). I think the people questioning this product and the idea of early reading and early education need to pick up a book by Glenn Doman or see it for themselves. I really don't understand why people wouldn't want to educate their children early, why they wouldn't believe it, we see how many kids can learn multiple languages as a baby but learn to read impossible!!! If it looks to good to be true it probably isn't what the heck is that. So what all these children were just born smart. Well parents on here congratulations we all had something when we were pregnant that made our babies extraordinary. That is ridiculous! I get that the advertisements may be wrong in the sense that some people buy it expecting their babies to be able to pick up any book and read it before their first or second birthday with no other education other then YBCR. That is not the case YBCR is just a tool along with everything else we use, but it does work and it helps especially parents who are busy working or dealing with other kids and don't have time to make their own flash cards and things. Sorry for the rant...but you have got to be kidding me. Update: I was reading the link Hmm. Here is the link to their petition and then there is something below where you can add additonal comments. Maybe if we wrote in the additional comments box that the information typed in that petition is nothing other than false and that this program actually does work then it would go straight to the FTC. Not sure. http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/621/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=6502There is also a Facebook page called Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood. I went on there and stated my opinion. I would encourage you folks to do the same on that and let the people on there know , you know the ones who are falling for this garbage, that this program is indeed educational and atually works. and it stated "In fact, there is no evidence babies learn anything—let alone how to read—by watching videos. And research links infant screen time to sleep disturbances and delayed language acquisition, as well as problems in later childhood such as poor school performance and childhood obesity. That’s why the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time for children under two." My reply is my child sleeps for 12 hours at night usually and I can't see how a 30 min program can make your child obese look at children and adolesents now who are addicted to video games I don't think they were watching YBCR or doing early education because if they were they would be reading a book or doing something else probably educational at least my daughter seems to be all about educational things and I do not see her addicted to television or video games in the future...what happened to parenting? If you let your kids watch sesame street that is an hour long watch out you are contributuing to obesity and sleep problems in your children....tell all the babies who love elmo they can't watch him anymore!

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: How many words did ur baby know (SPOKE) when he/she turned 1 yr old

I think all babies are different. I don't know how my daughter picked up so many words so fast but at only a few months old she was actually struggling trying to speak...you could see her and hear her and I have videos of her trying so hard to talk. Maybe because we were so loud and talkative around her. But when she finally was able to speak, she did and hasn't stopped. I just felt like my previous post sounded a little bit like bragging and I don't want to come off like that. She just spoke sooo much by age one but I didn't know if she actually understood what she was saying. She used to say I LOVE YOU all DAY! now you have to work for it...I miss that.
