I was just reading your blog about the BrillKids, and frankly, that kinda convinced me to want to try it out. I'm going to take it to someone who can actually take care of installing it for me, so I can runt the program. The more time I spend waiting, the more precious time I am wasting. I'm guessing it will take me a week or more to get everything done. Will keep you guys posted. =) And I will go through your blog, which is quite interesting. Looking forward to your archive of accumulated evidence.
Maquenzie, am looking forward to hearing about your experience, please let us know how it goes.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Arabic Schedule
|
on: December 26, 2010, 03:17:30 PM
|
|
Hi,
I have been skimming through some previous forums about how to teach Arabic, and got an idea on how to get started, but my biggest downfall is that I don't have LR, due to it not being available for Macbook. Sooo, I am making my own Arabic sets. The thing is, I just wanted to know the best way to go about doing it.
I read, as suggested by AyeshaNicole, that it is better to introduce each letters and sounds, and the vowel sounds before doing whole words. So my question is, can someone recommend a schedule that would work best to introduce the Arabic lessons. I am doing Doman Reading for English and Math, and would really want to get the Arabic in there.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I was told that the Little Reader for macbook users might be out, so wanted to ask to confirm. Is it out yet? If not, when is the estimate date for it to be released? I am dying to use it for my macbook, because it's not easy to make my own presentations, and due to that am falling really behind and then stop for a few days, cuz i can't keep up. There is a HUGE market for Macbook and it would be wonderful if there is something for macbook users as well. My son is already 2, and i would hate to miss out on something as wonderful as this. PLEASEEEEE come out with it sooner.
A desperate mother who wants the best for her child.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Ideal gap between babies?
|

My son will be 2 on Dec 3rd. I seriously thought, I'd be pregnant by now and wanted to have my baby with age gap of 2.5 years. However, due to back problems, I have been recommended to wait, BUT my major issue is that my son STILL doesn't sleep through the night. It is very difficult, and I know being pregnant or having a baby will make it tougher.
I am currently taking a course in attachment and read about a study, where a secure child's (first) attachment security drops with the birth of a second baby. And how the parents handle, explain and prepare the first child, it may or may not be drastic. So I figured a child being older 3 years would better understand when parents explain another member also coming to the family.
There are pros and cons for both sides. For me, being physically fit, (a friend of mine got pregnant 4 month after her first baby and is having a very difficult time, she hadn't properly recovered) and making sure first child is old enough so I can speak to him logically and he would understand. of course being that he is still a child at that age, it doesnt mean he WILL understand, but will def be a lot easier. =)

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Has anyone tried the ipad for reading and math?
|

Hi,
I am sitting here making red dots keynote presentations, for my son (for those wondering, LM is not for Mac users) so anyway then I realized, that there is a keynote for ipad as well. I was wondering if anyone has actually used any presentation they made on an ipad?
My son is not very fond of looking at the dots on an actual flashcard and likes it better on the computer screen. He also LOVES my iphone so was wondering to put presentation on there. Any experiences or thoughts?

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Doman inspired daycare - Have you found one?

This is wonderful lelsk, thank you. It makes sense and understandable, it's easy to tarnish someones name and reputation, and being that in a daycare setting, it does change what Doman would like (i.e. home setting).
Being that so many parents in the US are aware of the Doman method, I was really curious to find if there were any daycares using his method, the case now being not to use his name, im sure there are more than daycares out there that do use his ideas but don't advertise as such.

I second Arvi, I mean there are a quite a few of them out there that do the flashcard method, I know the ones on computer or tv can be somewhat diff, since they are not EXACTLY what Doman taught, but there are many companies who do actual physical ones, so how does the whole legal issue work?
Also, the video that DomanMom put, was also on the iahp website, and they were incorporated Doman's teaching int heir classroom, how did that work out?

Thanks a lot you guys! I agree about the parent/child relationship and parents doing the ground work, but in reality I find, many are not able to live such a lifestyle. For me, I find it to be such a wonderful and benefiting program, that why not benefit as many children's lives as possible. The best way like wetdreamer described is home away from home. I remember how attached some of the children would get with me, as their caretaker, that when their parent would come to pick them up, they would not want to leave at times. So as a teacher and someone in charge of making impressions and influencing I find, it's better to have something Doman in daycares than nothing at all.
DomanMom, thanks a lot for the links, really appreciate it! I was recently reading your previous post on the success of math with your son, didn't know you run you own daycare, good for you. It's really nice to get ideas and tips on what you all have done as parents and professional lives. Also, I am hoping to be next to you when it comes to my son succeeding in this journey, not that I have huge expectations, but want him to be as great as he can be.
Thank you all once again.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Difference Between Little Reader and Doman Method
|
on: October 26, 2010, 11:41:43 AM

Hi!
Can someone please tell me what's the difference between the Little Reader and the Doman Method for both Reading and Math? I curious not about the obvious, which is LR being in the computer and Doman the actual physical flashcards, but the method. All I know is that Doman reading is 5 sets of 5 words flashed 5 times a day, how does LR go in order to get results? I am curious about the math as well.
Thanks a bunch!

Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Re: Anyone did Hypnobabies or something similar for birth?

Dear Noha,
I will sound disappointing here, but I did not have my son in Bahrain. I knew it would not be possible to do a water birth here, so i opted to go back to the States so I can do it the way I wanted. Even back in US, it's not easy since many hospital have policies which go against natural birthing, so I did a lot of research and sought out a hospital which also had midwives and water birthing center.
I do think being in water since active labor till the pushing stage made it easier for me. BUT i have seen many women on hypnobabies forum who have had good experience without it, so don't be too disappointed.
To answer your question about the waves. I do rem that I would be asleep and during the active labor part, most likely when I was close to 8-10 cm, the pressure waves would get intense. I would wake up humming and moaning due to the intensity of the pain. All I rem from the whole hypnosis session and would repeat to myself was it's a tight hug and would repeat it to myself. Guess that part stuck to me. Anyway, having a doula or any good supportive person with you who understands what you are doing, helps TREMENDOUSLY! When I would wake up humming or moaning due to the intensity, she would calm me down, using some of the hynobabies line, and that DID make it easy.
I think I will need to really practice a lot more my second time around, because I did not use the anastasia part, and I think that is the key. Which you should do as well. If you have time between having your baby, I would recommend that you get these two books which I found to be quite useful. One is called Active labor and the other is Guide to Childbirth by Ina May, there is another book called Back Labor No More and is helpful. Having read these, it really takes the fear out which is another key element into creating that feeling of you can do it, and the pain is only there if we fear it too much.
Finally, I would recommend that you look into if you can try and have a midwife come to your house. you can set something up in your bath tub or a small pool, which is what many women do in the US. If that is not possible, then def, get those books because you can use the tips int here for a hospital room setting trying out your hypnosis along the way. There is soo much to say, but I think I have said plenty. I'll end it here and once you read this, we can continue it from there. =)

I did hypnobabies as well. I had a good if not wonderful experience. I did feel the pressure like they call it, but it was during the last stages and boy was I able to handle them. I had been sleep deprived for the past 2 days so when I was in labor, I would fall asleep between the pressure waves (contractions) Again I don't know if it was sleep or if I was hypnotized, because I had headphones with the birthing cd on. Another thing that helped was having a doula. I could not have done it or would have enjoyed it had it not been for her. She was another hypno mom who lived close to my area and she came to be with me. I had my son in the water, and she was right next to me kneeling on the floor the whole time I was in labor (God bless her) That was the first time we met =) Anyway one thing is for sure. I will be doing hypnobabies again and have recommended it to many friends. If not completely, it does make you more in control of your body and able to overcome fear and allows you to make your labor a lot more easier. FehMina
