31  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: IMPORTANT: Notice for Little Reader 118 Users (Read before Upgrading!) on: June 15, 2009, 08:46:35 PM
hi KL

i am not sure if you remember me.
i had the problem with internet connection speed and said that i would like to have LR and LM on disk.

well just wanted to let you know that i changed my internet provider and i managed to download the LR and curriculum.

i love it!

it promotes UNDERSTANDING  as well as reading. it was nerve wracking uninstalling my old LR as i didnt know if it could be downloaded. will do the maths tomorrow.

now i know what you guys were up to all this time!

thanks again
32  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Graduates of Glenn Doman's Evan Thomas Institute or IAHP on: June 13, 2009, 01:34:02 PM

it is interesting to find out what are the set of skills most needed to function at optimum levels in the world. is it KNOWING alot of things, being able to speed read or is it critical reasoning, an understanding of the social complexities of todays society.

what is expected from these kids.

are they expected to be super special and expected to compete or create something the world hasnt seen and desperately needs. are they expected to be the intellectual super heroes of this generation. finding cures for deadly diseases.

does inspiration to create come easier to those that have a higher IQ or is it passion that drives a person.

maybe a small percentage of these kids werent happy (i say small because its very hard to think that these kids were not happy. i think of them as the happiest people in the world) hence didnt have passion.  maybe they just wanted to do normal things.

intellectually superior people may not do great things. a passionate person however has the motivation to do great things.

maybe EQ needs to be developed just as much as IQ

i like those ideas. the crayons will strengthen finger muscles and develop fine motor and getting him to help in the kitchen is something i never thought of.

i am looking forward to cooking tomorrow!
34  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / reading and emotional intelligence on: June 11, 2009, 01:20:28 PM
Hi there.

here is some research by Dr Kathie Nunley.

"Reading is the subject of much concern and debate in education. What makes a good reader? What makes a poor reader? How can I help a struggling reader?

While there has been a good deal of research on reading, most of it focuses on explaining reading problems with very little on possible treatment.

Some of the research has been surprising. I think we were all surprised by the research that showed that reading to children at an early age, does not necessarily make for a good or early reader. In fact, sometimes

reading to children can cause just the opposite: something referred to as "the broccoli effect." This comes about if nightly reading is viewed by the parent and the child as a necessary chore. Can you hear the parent who crossly shouts, "turn off that t.v. and get in here...I'm tired and want to get this reading over with, NOW."

If viewed as a daily "have-to" whether you like it or not, reading can actually turn-off a child's love for the activity.

Two things that do show a strong correlation with good readers: early phonemic awareness, and parents who read for personal pleasure. Early phonemic awareness refers to how early someone actually demonstrates or teaches a child that a letter has a sound. The sooner that a child understands that letters symbolize sounds, the sooner he or she reads. But I think the biggest influence is the parents' personal love for reading. Does the child see Mom, Dad, Grandpa, read? Is reading a value in the home reflected by accessibility to books? A parent or caregiver who demonstrates the joy of reading has the biggest influence on a child's reading ability and life-long interest in reading."

please share how you teach your child to read while taking care of the emotional aspect as well. would be helpful for all parents that are trying to integrate joy and learning.

thanx in advance

35  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: My baby cried today............. on: June 11, 2009, 12:59:50 PM
i know how you feel.

we've been through a similar thing. while i was breast feeding i brought Sa'ad into our bed. my husband couldnt sleep though because Sa'ad would kick him and sleep on him.

i had to use a sleep training technique to first teach Sa'ad how to sleep. your baby cries because he does not know how to put himself to sleep. we did the training. it was hard at first and i felt terrible.

but baby was fine the next day. he actually forgot about it and he of course still trusted me. now we are both happy. i dont think that it scarred him in anyway at all.
crying was part of the process. it couldnt be avoided
36  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: My Precious Moment when teaching my 11 months Baby.. on: June 11, 2009, 12:18:06 PM
wow geniusqarissa.

very touching story.
im sure you wanted to scream with joy!

congratulations and happy teaching!
37  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / occupying child with something other than tv while you are busy on: June 11, 2009, 12:13:11 PM
hi there.

when i need to get meals ready or i have other work that needs to get done, sometimes LO wants my attention then. its easier to switch on the tv and put einsteins on but there must be another way to get them to entertain themselves while we try and do whatever important thing that needs to be done.

so far fridge magnets have provided some distraction. i have alphabets and Sa'ad lines them up. he also empties my tupperware/plasticware cupboard.
that gives me time to get things done.

any more ideas
38  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: maths- what happens when you complete prog and are unsuccessful on: June 10, 2009, 09:19:33 PM
hi joha

i understand what you mean. i think i should also give it a weeks break though. it seems i am enjoying maths more than my son is. it is important to follow their cue. although he looks at the screen something tells me that he isnt enjoying it 100% right now. i dont see that spark. doman says learning is suppose to be joyful.
i actually have to thank u because otherwise i wouldnt have followed my instinct and right now my instinct is telling me to give it a break.

i need to bring the joy back somehow. thats what will make it successful.
39  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: maths- what happens when you complete prog and are unsuccessful on: June 10, 2009, 08:47:03 PM
LOL the math program is intense and can be tricky!
i had read the how to multiply your baby's intelligence book but i only understood the program when i looked at schedules posted here and read through posts.

now ive just borrowed the how to teach your baby maths from a friend.
40  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: maths- what happens when you complete prog and are unsuccessful on: June 10, 2009, 04:05:00 PM
hi there kappasweet.

i actually did it as a problemsolving not test. (i am not a bad mommy!!! jj)

i hadnt ever problem solved before.
i was reading the doman maths book and they said we can problem solve after the equation session. so thats what i tried doing. its like a give and take thing.

by master i mean that he must accomplish what the program is meant for him to accomplish. thats the only word i could think of at the time. i dont put expectations on him at all as knowledge is a gift, but would like to know what to do in my situation.
41  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: maths- what happens when you complete prog and are unsuccessful on: June 10, 2009, 03:52:07 PM
hi there aguh and joha.

i am also using LM random equations.
i didnt test till yesterday. and that was a problem solving. the first time i used 36 and 37. he got it right. i didnt try with small numbers. when he gets it wrong i tell him "this ones 23" "winner!!!!!!!" because i feel bad. i dont want him to sense my dissapointment. maybe problem solving isnt for us.

joha i am aghast at your suggestion of stopping!!!!!!!!!!! do u know how organised i am!!!!!!! just kidding. it will make me nuts knowing that i have LM and wont be able to use it.
sa'ad isnt crazy about the maths but he doesnt hate it either. he looks at the screen though.
joha do you think that if i give him a 2 week break he will realise what he is missing?
and see the error of his ways!
what if i stop and he realises life is better without it. he is also 2years and a month so time is of the essence.

maybe i should show equations only for a week or 2 and then continue with quantity.
what do you think?
42  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: maths- what happens when you complete prog and are unsuccessful on: June 10, 2009, 09:11:48 AM
tse_844

thats the doman method of doing equations
perfectly fine.
the child somehow grasps the concept and figures out what the word plus means without seeing the sign.
43  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / maths- what happens when you complete prog and are unsuccessful on: June 10, 2009, 07:26:37 AM
hi there.

so far in my maths programme we have reached the half way mark with dots.

i would like to know, if your child hasnt mastered the instant maths technique when you finish all the dots what do you do.

do you start all over again but keep the equations at a higher level or what.

have any of you been in that position?

i tried a few problem solving sessions yesterday. the first 2 times( on seperate occasions in the day) he got right. the next 2 were unsuccessful. i regarded it as a win win situation the way doman says.

if however i complete the dots and he hasnt mastered the technique what do i do?

i am very consistent on my programme.

3 number quantity sessions consisting of 10 cards and 3 equation sessions of 4 eqn.

thanks in advance
44  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Important POLL - What's your Internet connection speed? (Please help answer! on: June 09, 2009, 07:01:08 PM
Hi there.

i think i will have to have a cd shipped to me.
it took me about an hour to download LR. the connection is also not very stable (i dont know why)

the speed says 460 kbps
45  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Glenn Doman Products on: June 09, 2009, 06:21:28 PM
hi there.

i have 4 sets of programs of intellegence cards (general knowledge)
quality is excellent.

the cd roms are wonderful. its bits of intelligence. meaning picture and word. they have these words in 5 languages which i love. planning to slowly get the whole set.

definitely worth it but if you dont have LR and LM then i would invest in these first.
