31  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: decision between LR and YBCR on: June 06, 2009, 06:41:42 AM
I really like both products, but if I could only choose one it would be Little Reader. I think YBCR is a great supplement but once your done, your done. With Little Reader the possibilities are endless. You can teach your baby anything you can imagine plus with all of the great downloads available you aren't even limited to just your imagination happy

Good Luck
32  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: YBCR good or bad? on: June 03, 2009, 05:44:01 AM
I think YBCR is a great product. My son learned his body parts and animals from it. I'm not sure if this product alone would ever really teach you baby to read, but that's just my opinion. I do feel, however, that it is a wonderful supplement to other programs that you may be doing.

I started showing my son when he was just under one, he is now 18 months. So, he has viewed all of the videos and we now just pick a random one to watch almost every day. I keep them in the car now. We have a dvd in the car and since we live somewhere a bit rural every time we go somewhere it usually involves at least 20 or so minutes drive. It keeps him entertained and focused.

I always recommend that if it is available to check it out at your local library. That way you get to see the product for yourself and let your little one try it out. That is what we did. I feel it is worth the purchase. I bought our dvd set off of Ebay. I didn't get all of the cards or books though. I didn't feel we needed those.

33  The BrillKids Forum / BrillKids Announcements / Re: UPDATE ON UPCOMING CHANGES on: June 01, 2009, 02:40:28 PM
Sorry if this has been answered before but...  blush

When you say "6 Month" is that a 6 month long curriculum or is it for 6 month old babies? I am assuming it is a 6 month time frame. Also, will the 12 month curriculum include the same things as the 6 month or will it be completley different?

So if I get the 6 month curriculum then when the 12 month comes out and I want to get that, will it include all the same content as the 6 month plus an additional 6 months worth of content? If so, wouldn't it be better to just "sell" the content in 6 month sets? I guess you could sell a 12 month curriculum, but for those of us that already own the first six month it would be nice to be able to purchase the next six months without having to pay for the first six months that we already have.

I hope I was clear. Thanks, and I am really looking forward to the new releases!
34  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: Advice on going back to work on: May 29, 2009, 05:43:35 PM
That's a hard one to give advice to. It's such a personal thing and different for each family. I stay at home now but I did ok working when my first was about two. I stopped when my second was born. I just couldn't leave my newborn, even though I loved my sitter  rolleyes  Now I have four kids and I think I would only be working to pay for daycare so I stay home. Luckily hubby makes enough! I would like to have something to do once my littlest is a little older though. I have been working on my Elementary Education degree but I'm not sure if that's what I will end up doing.

I wish you luck in what you need to do, I hope it works out for you and your kids. It sounds great that you seam to have a nice part time schedule with some flexibility.
35  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Seizures from illness in babies?? on: May 29, 2009, 04:03:25 AM
I'm so sorry this has happened, I know just how scary it is.  Sad

When my daughter was 12 months old, and the day she received her MMR and chicken pox immunization, she had her first seizure. I was so scared! We ran several tests, which all came back normal. So they just said it must have been a febrile seizure. Nobody would say anything about the shots  tongue  I'm sure these started her whole seizure issue. Basically a febrile seizure is a seizure caused by a fever. My daughter waited about a month before having another seizure, but this time she was completley healthy. So we don't (and still don't) know why she was having seizures.

I was told that it is very common for children to have seizures while very young especially when sick and running a fever. Most will outgrow it by the time they are five.

Since my daughter had a couple of her seizures while well, they put her on seizure meds. These completley stopped her seizures, even when sick. When we tried to stop the meds when she was about three she had a seizure about three weeks later, so back on the meds she went. She's now five, almost six, and has been off the meds for over a year and she has been seizure free even when sick. So, I'm hoping that she indeed did grow out of it. I do keep a close eye on her when she is sick though.

The thing we had to do with my daughter since having a fever (and being overtired) was a trigger for her, we had to give her tylenol and ibeprophin(sp?) every three hours at the first sign of a fever. This insured that her fever didn't get the chance to spike.

Unfortunateley, I do think this is commom, although it doesn't feel very common when it is your own baby!

I hope your little princess is feeling better. I think the ER visits are just as traumatic as the seizure. Sad

tisk tisk Wink

I probably would have done the same. Who wants to go into a whole explanation there in the small time frame of introducing yourself.

Consider yourself forgiven LOL
37  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: what color are those babies eyes on: May 26, 2009, 09:44:15 PM
My husband's eyes are green and mine are brown. My children have, in this order, Green, Blue, Brown, and Blue again.

38  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Is anyone working on a YBCR (volume 2) Playlist on: May 26, 2009, 04:02:54 PM
Oh I'm so lazy! LOL  I need to just get in there and add the sound. Maybe I'll get around to that this week and then I'll edit it in the LR files.

Thanks for the Karma guys!
39  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: How did you deliver your baby? Vaginal or Cesarean? on: May 21, 2009, 05:08:32 PM
I delivered all four of my kiddos vaginally. They were big too! blink
40  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: teaching the sound of alphabets before the name of letters on: May 21, 2009, 04:54:55 PM
I like the idea of teaching the sounds first. I think it makes the whole process of decoding words they don't know by sight a little easier for them.

I do think at some piont down the road you will need to introduce the names of the letters though.
41  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Is anyone working on a YBCR (volume 2) Playlist on: May 20, 2009, 04:12:02 PM
I have Vol 2 & 3 already to go on my LR so I will add it to the files. I haven't gotten around to adding sound yet but you could use it as a start. There are several pictures already loaded for each word. You'll have to wait until it gets approved though.

I don't know why but I'm having trouble exporting Volume three. I will try again later. confused
42  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: challenges facing a gifted child on: May 19, 2009, 08:33:36 PM
Our public school offers a test that is given to any child if requested. The test consists of three different areas. If they score at or above 97% on any of the three areas they qualify for the gifted program at school.

My 9 year old scored 100% in all three areas.  happy  My 11 year old scored 97% on one test so he still qualified big grin

I believe the three areas were:

Quantitative
Verbal
Nonverbal
43  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: challenges facing a gifted child on: May 19, 2009, 07:45:58 PM
My oldest two boys are considered "gifted" I never did any early learning with them, they just tested this way once in school. They are both in the gifted program at their public school.

I find some of the biggest challenges that they face is boredom and themselves. When my oldest started fourth grade he would say every day "I already know everything that is being taught" As the year progressed they were able to challenge him more. But, when they get bored they sort of shut down and don't want to put in any effort. They both love the gifted class though and really shine in there.

I find too that it's like they know they are smart so they don't need to put in any extra effort to do better. I feel that even if they are ahead they should still strive to do their best and this is what I expect from them. It's just not always easy to convince them of this wub
44  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: The DVD i used to teach my son all of the 220 Dolch sight words on: May 19, 2009, 02:02:16 AM
Those look great. There is also a set of DVD's called "Meet The Sight Words". Kind of along the same lines.

Thanks, I love hearing about new products that I hadn't thought of before smile

I forgot to add that you can find these DVD's on Amazon. I love Amazon most of the time because a lot of things will qualify for free shipping and no tax.  big grin

Every little bit helps!!

Hi yoselin,

You must have Little Reader on your computer for this file to work. I think that may be the problem??
