Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: Do you have an Early Learning Buddy?

I simply love this forum! I truly appreciate the ideas and the time people put in towards their EL babies. I would love an EL buddy. I live in Calgary with my husband and 6 mo old son. I am an environmental engineer by profession but I am on mat leave for the year and currently on the fence about returning to work. I have very many interests but love everything EL, reading, hiking, and photography.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: How much money have you spent on bits of knowledge?

I bought some other cards (from the same company though) from my local Costco for $8 (for 324 cards). The cards fit in a medium sized hand. I am not sure if all the other categories from this company have the same finish but the set I have has a washed finish (which I assume was intentional). The cards do not make it to the "high quality” image category but given the price and how compact they are, it works out when we are out and about.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: is enrolling to kindermusik a good idea?

We are currently doing Kindermusik. I think I love it more than my 5.5 month old. I really like it because it really brings together bonding, music, movement together. Besides, it is a nice way for the little people to interact and it is a whole lot of fun. The way I figured out if my son would like it was to take a trail class. I think all kindermusik classes allow this. I just looked up nearby classes on the kindermusik website using my postal code and contacted the teacher offering lessons if I could stop by.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Screen time??

We are currently doing LR, LM, and LMs with our 5.5 month old son. We started with LR, added LM, and finally LMs. If we do all three back to back, it takes us less than 15 to 20 minutes. I believe the overall screen time is around 30 mins/day for both sessions. While the AAP’s recommendation of "no screen time before the age of 2" is at the back of our minds, we caved in because we finally accepted that we cannot replicate what these wonderful programs do without killing ourselves making all the materials. However, we would love to add Tweedlewink and are now wondering about the additional screen time. I posted a similar question yesterday and would love to hear from other people using DVDs for early learning.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Tweedlewink and Multiple Language Introduction
|

Greetings! I have a five and a half month old son. We are currently doing some components of the Doman newborn program, LR, LM, and LMs (we are also doing IAHP’s word, picture, and math physical flash cards). We speak in two languages everyday and we sing songs in three languages. I am considering incorporating Tweedlewink and a reading program with the two other languages. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on when to introduce these additional components. Also, would someone be able to shed some light on Tweedlewink serving as an EK tool? Are the topics very diverse? The sample lesson on youtube includes a lesson on paintings from what I remember. I love the idea of Tweedlewink DVDs but I am a little apprehensive about too much screen time. Thanks in advance!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / LR and Doman
|

Hi Everyone, My son is 4.5 months old and we are doing LR, LM, and LMs with him. We introduced all three programs slowly over the last four weeks and he seems to be enjoying them at the moment. We currently do these programs twice a day. I noticed that while he is enthusiastic about most components of the LR, he isn't keen on sight words. I bought Doman's "how smart is your baby" and "how to teach your baby to read" teaching packs. We were ding some components of these right from birth before we started LR. I was wondering if I should do sight words with physical flash cards. Wondering if anyone has experience with similar issue or could possibly weigh on on this. Thanks in advance.

Greetings everyone! I have a 3 month old baby boy. We have been doing some components of the Doman "How smart is your baby" program since birth. Thanks to the insights on this forum, I am considering buying LR. I was curious about incorporating the little math and music programs into our daily learning. I would appreciate it if some of you could weigh in on how and when to incorporate these. Thank you!
