31  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Jaykob using memory magic on: June 04, 2015, 09:27:48 AM
The apps have unfortunately been removed. I don't think they are available again yet. I have yet to look for anything similar. The PC games are still available though. Having used them for a. While now I can suggest a few free alternatives.
Print out a stack of picture cards all the same size. You need them small enough to manage a large quantity on display at once but large enough your child can see them. Ours were 3 inches square but I am not suggesting that is the right size for you. Anyway once you have a large stack select any 5-10 cards and lay then out one by one while making up the funniest most rediculous story's you can think of. Then collect them all up in order and ask your child to recal the story as you produce the pictures. They should have no trouble doing the first 5 at all. Within a few weeks of playing this my kids were making up stories for themselves and each other and doing 100 plus cards at a time. Usually they got bored of the game before they hit the limit of their potential.
The eye training didint help. Well maybe we didn't do enough of it (probably that is the truth of it) but he still had/has tracking problems even now that he can read chapter books. We got him glasses.
The girls learnt peg memory but don't use it. They prefer a system where by they imagine their house and add items to their imaginary house room by room, as they walk through it (in their imagination) they can recal items based on them being in that room. I hope that made some sense. So for the shopping list they might imagine spilt milk on the front door mat, tomatoes to roll down the hallway, washing powder all over the carpet in the lounge room, and the phone covered in masking tape for a phone card etc.
it's all been a lot of fun for them and they have excellent memories. They can rememebr a three stanza poem in less than 10 minutes and can recall it weeks later.
32  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / Mathematics / Re: Advanced math sooner...Calculus at age 5? on: May 11, 2015, 08:31:31 AM
See these blocks keep popping up. I am going to have to buy some to play with arnt I? Sigh.
33  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / Mathematics / Advanced math sooner...Calculus at age 5? on: May 09, 2015, 08:57:01 AM
I found this article very interesting. Some of you will enjoy it. It's not specifically EL but opens a lot of doors all the same.
http://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2014/03/5-year-olds-can-learn-calculus/284124/
I have been searching for math games and ideas to extend on my children's mathematical understanding in a play based or hands on way. Two of my children (7 and 9) really get a lot of benefit from physical hands on manipulation of math ideas. We use paddle pops for regrouping, abacus for addition and subtraction, counters for patterns etc. if anyone knows any good bloggs or websites with more advanced math concepts with physical objects I would love to see them.
My kids get up much earlier than me (they are up with the sun) and I often leave them art ideas set up on the table. It would be awesome to leave some math ideas set up on the table sometimes too.
I havnt read the books in the article yet. Has anyone else?
34  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Alternatives to Soft Mozart? on: April 28, 2015, 12:28:32 PM
Dust duster and piano maestro IMHO would be too complicated for a young child to use to learn piano in connection with a real piano. The gap between the iPad screen and the reality of hitting piano keys would be a lot for a little brain to manage. We have both apps here. My younger two (7,9) use dust duster on the iPad for fun and games. All my kids use piano Maestro to learn top 40s songs on the real piano, just using the midi interface and notes from the ipad. I would not consider this a complete piano education in any way. I don't know if it could be. However these apps would be a good way to entice your reluctant daughter to play piano without realising it by playing directly on the iPad, without the piano. Piano duster is cheep and good fun so see if she likes it.
We have softmozart. My son wasn't keen on it until he was 4. The. He happily practiced everyday for lego bribes LOL One of my children never really took to piano despite all the best we had on offer including payed lessons. She likes to sing though and will play the apps for fun! Three of us (myself included) still use softmozart dailly but like you I don't like a subscription based product and am greatful to have a perpetual copy, although I can never upgrade it I still have something without forking out money every month.

I just don't see the point in pushing kids who hate it to play piano. If you can't make it fun enough for her to want to play, give it up for a while. Piano is learnable at any age all it takes is time and consistent practice. Opportunity cost counts at this young age is important. That time she hates at the piano could be used to teach her something she loves and obsorbs more readily because of her passion for it.. Continue teaching music by all means but perhaps consider focussing on note recognition and input rather than instrument learning and output for a while.

The only other alternative to soft mozart that I know if worth using for little kids is piano wizard. I don't have it so I can't comment with accuracy.
35  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / Languages / Learning Latin. Free videos on: April 22, 2015, 09:18:36 PM
I was just shown these latin language DVDs. They run just a few minutes each, go slow enough to learn and there is plenty there to keep you going for half a year dailly. Great stuff check it out!
https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEE440D6A8DCBA478
Has anyone else found any great latin resourses I can add to our day?
36  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: This toddlers/children reading program seems to be great! need your opinion PLZ on: April 14, 2015, 09:12:44 AM
Just because the kindy recommends you reduce screen time doesn't mean you need to actually do it. If your child is engaged and actually learning from their screen time then that is a very different thing to watching cartoon all afternoon.....

Love it thanks for sharing
38  Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Re: glenn doman swimming brisbane on: March 29, 2015, 07:35:42 AM
Chaplan would be the closest but they won't be that close. I don't know if they have one Northside. Just do the research and teach them yourself. I taught my three how to swim at around age 2. It really wasn't difficult at all. Your money might be better spent on a babysitter to hold your other kid and follow along with what you do. There are a lot of swim schools in brisbane. Some get great results and others are not worth a dime. Definelty research well and view a few lessons on various age groups.
39  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: How do we get our child to co operate when they don't want encyclopedic cards on: March 12, 2015, 10:35:14 AM
We did them in the car. Kids prefer anything to looking at the back of the car seat in front of them. LOL
40  Local Support Groups / Local Meet-Ups / Re: Parents meet-up in Brisbane on: March 12, 2015, 10:33:57 AM
We can do that. Are you Northside? There is a couple of parks we have been eying off for a visit too.
41  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: My boy with Down Syndrome is reading at age 2 and a half years on: March 12, 2015, 10:32:30 AM
Wow! That's fabulous news. What a lucky little man to have a mum as dedicated as you smile
42  Local Support Groups / Local Meet-Ups / Re: Parents meet-up in Brisbane on: March 05, 2015, 10:48:27 AM
Hi Yusrab welcome to the forum. There are a few of us here in Brisbane, but not a lot really. I am on the south side. We can have a meet up sometime if you like. PM me with your ideas and we will see if we can manage it. smile
43  The BrillKids Forum / BrillKids Announcements / Re: Announcing HELLO PAL, our NEW APP (or, "What We've Been Up To") on: March 05, 2015, 10:44:53 AM
This sounds fabulous! Congratulations on your new app, I hope it is an instant success. A very clever idea like this could make a huge difference to learning languages. I will chat to my big kids and see if they are interested smile
44  Parents' Lounge / Introduce Yourself / Re: Father of 4 Looking for Some Friendly Guidance on: February 08, 2015, 11:59:34 AM
Be sure to include your older children in viewing little musician. My older children and even myself benefited greatly from it. Your older children might also enjoy doing a different language pack from little reader.
