31  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Your experience is for me very useful on: July 22, 2013, 10:55:57 PM
First of all, Nuria, it sounds like you are doing a great job especially since English isn't your first language!  I am impressed!!  yes

Our experience with LR didn't start until my LO was 23 months old.  Right from the start, we used it five days a week, showing a session in the morning and a session in the afternoon.  Some weeks were just busy and we didn't always have the time.  My opinion is, try to do it five days a week, and if not, just be as consistent as you can be.  These little ones are pretty flexible thankfully, so they overcome most of our shortcomings!! LOL

We didn't use the LR book set until after she was 23 months.  She definitely has enjoyed them ever since we got them.  We don't read them as often now that she is 3 years old, but she still will occasionally choose one of those books to just sit and read.  When she was 10 months old, I did read other books to her.

We didn't use any other programs since LR was all we had.  Eventually, we did start using Starfall to learn the phonetic sounds and then Reading Bear once she knew all of her basic phonics.  I think especially with the newest version of LR, kids can get most of their phonics just from using LR.  But since Starfall and Reading Bear are free...we used them too! smile   Phonics are a great way to learn reading, but I know with my daughter, she learned a lot of her phonics just by default.  I guess she just intuited them.

As far as when you can expect to see the results... that would depend on your child's personality.  My daughter likes putting on a show for anyone and everyone!!  But she is also stubborn and can act like she doesn't know even the most simple words now that she has proven otherwise so many times.  Just keep having fun!  EL is a great journey!  And definitely keep us posted!

Yes!! I would love to do this!
34  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Signing Time DVD sale on: June 03, 2013, 11:23:16 AM
It looks like you can get 2 of each DVD or 2 of each set of DVDs per customer.  So if you wanted to buy all 36 videos that they offer, you would only have to pay $360!  You could buy 2 of the whole set at that price for about the same as buying it once normally!  $360 is a great deal for 36 quality DVDs!!!

35  Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Re: Essential Reading for EL parents- please help me out! on: June 02, 2013, 09:41:16 AM
Congratulations!!  My daughter was so excited to hear that Alex is going to be a big sister!!

We are also expecting a little one in 5 months, so I am following this topic with great interest.  My husband is starting to see the benefit of all things EL, but when I explained the little that I know about EC... ohmy   Well, it may take a bit of convincing!! LOL

If anyone knows of a downloadable version of books about EC, I would be very interested in that.  Our local library leaves a little to be desired and hubby isn't keen on me buying any more books that I am going to read for a few months and not use again.   So any online reading on any and all things EL, especially EC would be very helpful!

37  Parents' Lounge / For Guests - No Membership Required / Re: print 2 different words on 1 sheet of paper? on: May 22, 2013, 07:20:55 PM
Actually, I did this for my daughter simply because I was cheap! LOL   It took less ink if I didn't print the pictures and used half the paper when I did two words per card.

Go to the print button in LR.  Under Layout, choose the Half sheet prints (Word & Picture separate).  Under Content, choose word only.  Under Number of word prints, choose 1.  If you have 10 words to print out, just choose the first 5 and print them out.  Then turn the paper around and print the other 5.  It does take a little longer to flip it around, but it was worth it.

If you print on regular paper, it is hard to flash the cards quickly.  Some times I laminated them with clear shelf cover paper (cheap at Wal-Mart).  This made them not stick together while flashing.  Then I bought some half sheet clear sheet covers (not so cheap at Office Max)  I liked these because I could change the words out every week and put them in a small 3-ring binder and flip through them quickly.

Hope this helps!
38  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Opinions about article: It’s Official: To Protect Baby’s Brain, Turn Off TV on: March 26, 2013, 09:01:26 PM
"Their verdict: It’s not good, and probably bad.
Media, whether playing in the background or designed explicitly as an infant educational tool, “have potentially negative effects and no known positive effects for children younger than 2 years,” concluded the AAP’s report, "

I wonder what kind of infant educational tools they researched??  Was it just the mainstream Sesame Street type of programing?  If so, then I could understand their verdict.  I can see such wonderful positive effects from my child using Brillkids programs and Reading Bear and Starfall. I don't think she would have advanced as quickly with just my homemade cards, etc, if we hadn't added in the media also.  I just couldn't add the pictures, fonts, number of words, etc. to compete with it.   How could Signing Time, Twiddlewink, Sparkabilities be considered harmful?

I can see how most "educational" programs would be detrimental though.  And we avoid those even though she is over two years old.  Yes, I would say turn off mainstream TV, but don't throw it all out just because they haven't really studied Early Learning.
39  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: EL Goals for 2013 on: March 23, 2013, 10:27:50 PM
Thought I would bump this thread and see how it is going for everyone.

An update on my almost three year old:

Reading:
LR is going very well.  We are doing our own playlists in addition to the daily lessons.  She now is able to open and play the entire lesson without my help including finding the correct playlist if I tell her what day of the month it is.
We are doing much better than I thought on the reading.  No where near what some of you are doing, but I am impressed! big grin   I think we are close to 100 books (including online) with very few repeats.  We made it all the way through Heidi condensed version and she really enjoyed it.  It took a couple of weeks.  Now we are working on another chapter book called New Kid in Town by Janette Oke.  There aren't many pictures, but she still sits, listens, and follows along with a couple of chapters a day.
We are up to 50% mastered in Reading Bear.  She does one lesson (choose for me) and one quiz per day.  We end up going through each lesson 5 times before she gets her gold star, but I don't think the repetition hurts her.  On the quizzes, she hasn't gotten less than a 15 for over a month!   She also handles the mouse on her own for this!

Math:
We are still plugging along on JumpMath1, Rightstart A, and MEP1.  We do at least one of these nearly every day and she still seems to enjoy it.
Math facts are only "mastered" if she uses manipulatives.  Oh, well we have a long time before I worry about it.  Still having fun so that is all that matters.
She is really amazing me with her telling time abilities.  Other measurements we aren't focusing on them right now.

Writing:
Not sure that she will still be ready for a handwriting book here in a couple of weeks when she turns 3.  Maybe later.

Science/History:
She really is interested in space and the universe right now.  Any free resourse ideas would be appreciated.  Wink

Music:
We are up to lesson 217 in LMs.  She pretty consistently recognizes all of the chords by sight and sound.  (Better than I do..."you're wrong, Momma!  It should be Re SO Te!"  tongue  laugh

Physical:
Physical stamina definitely needs to increase!!  Hard to do here in the winter.  We don't have access to gyms or any classes like gymnasicts, dancing, martial arts, etc.  Any ideas would be appreciated!!
We were able to go swimming in a motel pool the other day.  Obviously she forgot a lot since the last time.  She still loves the water so I'm hoping she picks it up again easily.

Other:
We haven't been very faithful with Rosetta Stone French lately.  Better get back at that!!
Manners.... well... She does very well with other people, not so great with Momma lately.  Did the terrible twos hit late?  Daddy is helping with that one, so it shouldn't be a problem for long!
I think she is ready for a spelling program.  I am looking at All About Spelling right now.

I am looking forward to hearing how others are doing.  You all keep me encouraged!!  Thanks!!!
40  BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / Re: NO INTEREST IN MATH LESSON on: March 23, 2013, 09:40:22 PM
We went through that stage for a LOOOONNGG time!  LOL  mad   Now we don't really use the lesson sections of LM, but we use other sections nearly every day and she loves it.  We also started using Right Start Math and MEP.  These might not work for a 10 month old though.  Sometimes just adding new icons from the LM library will help.  Here is a thread where TmT gave lots of great ideas to use LM in other ways than just playing the lessons. http://forum.brillkids.com/little-math/using-little-math-with-older-toddlers-and-preschoolers/  Use the search button at the top of this page to search for other great ideas from parents who were also stuck teaching a certain subject.  This forum is great for finding answers!!  Keep us posted on how it is going.  Maybe others can chime in if you continue to have no interest.  Just don't give up!
41  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: When do you use toothpaste? on: February 26, 2013, 07:49:25 PM
Here is an all natural toothpaste that we like.  Since it has no chemicals that are dangerous to swallow, you can use it at any age!

http://www.bulkherbstore.com/Bentonite-Clay-Toothpaste-Kit?s=toothpaste

Here is an article about the toothpaste.  http://www.bulkherbstore.com/articles/bentonite-clay-toothpaste?s=toothpaste

I prefer to use other flavoring instead of cinnamon, but you can be creative there.
42  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: What are your favorite youtube videos on: February 22, 2013, 09:44:53 PM
We also "stalk" TMT.  LOL

We also had made a whole playlist of just Number Crew videos, but as far as I can tell they were blocked by channel 4.  We haven't been able to find them on youtube for over a week, so if anyone can direct me to them I would be very happy!  Number Crew was used as a "reward" for doing other things!

Thanks for all the other suggestions, MummyRoo, Cokers, and Korrale!
