sveika, sveika, dziesma smile

You can play folk songs from other countries and even movies.

This is a big question of me. We are monolingual family in a monolingual environment. But we use to watch movies in English and Russian, sometimes also in Swedish and German.
My daughter prefers some animation movies, and mostly they are in English. But the language in these movies is very fast, and I am not sure if she can distinguish words. Some movies we are watching sometimes in English, sometimes in Latvian (our language), and Latvian version keeps her attention better. Usually I also comment what is happening on a screen.
(we don't watch these movies every day but sometmes.)

This week I got Finnish animation movies about Moomin. They are so nice! And heroes speak in a very slow and clear language. I and my husband, we are fans of Finnish, but we know just few words.

Is it possible that a child learns a language from movies? At least something?

tava mazā jau nav diži mazāka par manējo? manējā pati vēl peli darbināt neprot, tā ka kāds no lielajiem (parasti tēvs)  pats tās spēlītes spēlē un iekomentā, un bērns sēž klēpī. tas par childsplay. no kāda pusotra gada vai gada mēs viņu šad tad lietojam - kopš atradām, ka linuksā viņa jau ir iekšā. un pavisam maziem sīčiem tur ir foršas tās dzīvnieku balsis.

tu droši vien esi šveicē? malacis, ka tieci galā gan ar diviem bērniem, gan eksāmeniem un darbiem!

that very efficient game of letters-eating-penguin is in "tuxprint".
320  Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Re: Ar ko sākt? on: May 26, 2009, 12:28:20 PM
nu kā izlēmi? es te vēl mazliet padarbināju to programmu; viņa karas tikai tad, ja dators pārāk noslogots ar kaut ko citu, un uz citiem datoriem tai nevajadzētu būt problēmai. viņa tiešām būs jauka, lai mācītos angļu valodu; tur ir diezgan daudz materiāla jau iekšā. es to programmu vispār darbinu diezgan maz, bet viņa ir iepatikusies manam  vīram, kurš ar lielu prieku sīcei rāda visādas lietas smile
321  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Free Educational Software on: May 26, 2009, 12:24:53 PM
for linux users, I strongly recommend "childsplay". my child learned animals (in english) and their voices. she learned abc just in a moment (it was not our goal; we just wanted to have fun and to feed a penguin); here are also games for math and for memory development.
322  Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Re: Ar ko sākt? on: May 21, 2009, 05:55:12 AM
323  Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Re: Ar ko sākt? on: May 21, 2009, 05:13:45 AM

324  BrillKids Software / HOW TOs and FAQs / Re: Puzzled about Little Math? Suggest FAQ ideas here! on: May 19, 2009, 06:50:16 PM
Thanks! Succeeded!
I was thinking, is there a possibility to switch off 3 of 5 icon sets etc. But now I see that it is much better to use one icon set feo each preset smilesmile
325  Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Re: Ar ko sākt? on: May 19, 2009, 06:35:30 PM
smile

326  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Montessori and flashcard (right brain) on: May 16, 2009, 07:09:40 AM
Thank you for this very informative discussion!

I think, there are two types of flashing. TV is entertaining much faster than the real world can do. Everything is moving very fast. Also on news there are one-minute stories instead of longer ones.
With flashcards, every card is one bit of information. Every bit is different and it can be compared with the real world, for example, travelling. Children learn at a lightning speed and we should support it. I have seen that the same information is much easier to memorise if shown faster.
With learning, children don't go to another world like it is with TV entertainment.

It is also well studied that TV watching is switching off the thinking and the imagination. TV and reading are opposites. For example, TV can accelerate age dementia but reading can prevent it. I think, card flashing is more similar to reading smile

Also with traditional reading, we receive information much faster than in the real world; we can read faster than we speak; we can go to another world. But it is considered as a benefit smile
327  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Teaching math - languages dilemma! on: May 16, 2009, 04:57:22 AM
We are monolingual family and don't speak English at home. With LR, I keep English voice in background, and speak Latvian myself. I don't know what happens in my daughter's head but maybe she is learning English. May be after some time I should try Chinese also  LOL
328  Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Re: musu kartites un prezentacijas on: May 16, 2009, 04:50:07 AM

330  Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Re: musu kartites un prezentacijas on: May 14, 2009, 07:29:53 AM
